Three-Nucleon Dynamics in the dp breakup collisions at 190 MeV/nucleon using the WASA detector at COSY-Jülich

The differential cross section for the $^{1}$H$(d,pp)n$ breakup reaction at deuteron beam energy of 380 MeV has been determined with high precision for 189 angular configurations of outgoing protons in the region of forward laboratory angles. The cross section data were compared to theoretical predictions based on the state-of-the-art nucleon-nucleon potentials, combined with a three-nucleon force, the Coulomb interaction or carried out in a relativistic approach. In the region of the lowest differential cross section, the discrepancy between the data and the theoretical predictions is observed, also in the case of relativistic calculations.

Quasielastic $\overrightarrow{^{3}\mathrm{He}}(\overrightarrow{e},{e'})$ Asymmetry in the Threshold Region

A measurement of the double-spin asymmetry from electron-$^{3}$He scattering in the threshold region of two- and three-body breakup of $^{3}$He was performed at Jefferson Lab, for Q$^{2}$ values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/$c$)$^{2}$. The results of this measurement serve as a stringent test of our understanding of few-body systems. When compared with calculations from plane wave impulse approximation and Faddeev theory, we found that the Faddeev calculations, which use modern nuclear potentials and prescriptions for meson-exchange currents, demonstrate an overall good agreement with data.

Three-nucleon system: Irreducible and reducible contributions of the three-nucleon force

The three-nucleon bound and scattering equations are solved in momentum space for a coupled-channel Hamiltonian. The Hamiltonian couples the purely nucleonic sector of Hilbert space with a sector in which one nucleon is excited to a $Δ$ isobar. The interaction consists of irreducible two-baryon and irreducible three-baryon potentials. The calculation keeps only the purely nucleonic one among the irreducible three-baryon potentials. The coupled-channel two-baryon potential yields additional reducible contributions to the three-nucleon force. The Coulomb interaction between the two protons is included using the method of screening and renormalization. Three-nucleon force effects on the bound-state energies and on observables of elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering and breakup are studied.

First Measurement of the Asymmetry and the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Integrand from $\vec{{^3}He}(\vecγ,p)d$ reaction at the Incident Photon Energy of 29 MeV

The first measurement of the $\vec{^3He}(\vecγ,p)d$ process was performed at the High Intensity $γ$-ray Source (HI$γ$S) facility at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) using a circularly polarized, monoenergetic $γ$-ray beam and a longitudinally polarized $^3$He target. The spin-dependent asymmetry and the contribution from the two-body photodisintegration to the $^3$He Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integrand are extracted and compared with state-of-the-art three-nucleon system calculations at the incident photon energy of 29.0 MeV. The data are in general agreement with the various theoretical predictions based on the Siegert theorem or on explicit inclusion of meson-exchange currents.

Measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in the quasi-elastic $^3\vec{\mathrm{He}}(\vec{\mathrm{e}},\mathrm{e}'\mathrm{p})$ process

We report on a precise measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in electron-induced breakup of $^3\mathrm{He}$ proceeding to $\mathrm{pd}$ and $\mathrm{ppn}$ final states, performed in quasi-elastic kinematics at $Q^2 = 0.25\,(\mathrm{GeV}/c)^2$ for missing momenta up to $250\,\mathrm{MeV}/c$. These observables represent highly sensitive tools to investigate the electromagnetic and spin structure of $^3\mathrm{He}$ and the relative importance of two- and three-body effects involved in the breakup reaction dynamics. The measured asymmetries cannot be satisfactorily reproduced by state-of-the-art calculations of $^3\mathrm{He}$ unless their three-body segment is adjusted, indicating that the spin-dependent part of the nuclear interaction governing the three-body breakup process is much smaller than previously thought.

Measurement of the Doubly-Polarized $\vec{{^3}He}(\vecγ,n)pp$ Reaction at 16.5 MeV and Its Implications for the GDH Sum Rule

We report new measurements of the doubly-polarized photodisintegration of $^3$He at an incident photon energy of 16.5 MeV, carried out at the High Intensity $γ$-ray Source (HI$γ$S) facility located at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The spin-dependent double-differential cross sections and the contribution from the three--body channel to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) integrand were extracted and compared with the state-of-the-art three--body calculations. The calculations, which include the Coulomb interaction and are in good agreement with the results of previous measurements at 12.8 and 14.7 MeV, can no longer describe the cross section results at 16.5 MeV. The GDH integrand was found to be about one standard deviation larger than the maximum value predicted by the theories.

Measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in the quasi-elastic $^3\vec{\mathrm{He}}(\vec{\mathrm{e}},\mathrm{e}'\mathrm{d})$ process

We present a precise measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in the $^3\vec{\mathrm{He}}(\vec{\mathrm{e}},\mathrm{e}'\mathrm{d})$ reaction. This particular process is a uniquely sensitive probe of hadron dynamics in $^3\mathrm{He}$ and the structure of the underlying electromagnetic currents. The measurements have been performed in and around quasi-elastic kinematics at $Q^2 = 0.25\,(\mathrm{GeV}/c)^2$ for missing momenta up to $270\,\mathrm{MeV}/c$. The asymmetries are in fair agreement with the state-of-the-art calculations in terms of their functional dependencies on $p_\mathrm{m}$ and $ω$, but are systematically offset. Beyond the region of the quasi-elastic peak, the discrepancies become even more pronounced. Thus, our measurements have been able to reveal deficiencies in the most sophisticated calculations of the three-body nuclear system, and indicate that further refinement in the treatment of their two- and/or three-body dynamics is required.

First Measurements of Spin-Dependent Double-Differential Cross Sections and the GDH Integrand from \vec{^3He}(\vecγ,n)pp at Incident Photon Energies of 12.8 and 14.7 MeV

The first measurement of the three-body photodisintegration of longitudinally-polarized ^3He with a circularly-polarized γ-ray beam was carried out at the High Intensity γ-ray Source (HIγS) facility located at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The spin-dependent double-differential cross sections and the contributions from the three-body photodisintegration to the ^3He GDH integrand are presented and compared with state-of-the-art three-body calculations at the incident photon energies of 12.8 and 14.7 MeV. The data reveal the importance of including the Coulomb interaction between protons in three-body calculations.

Relativistic corrections of one-nucleon current in low-energy three-nucleon photonuclear reactions

Proton-deuteron radiative capture and two- and three-body photodisintegration of 3He at low energy are described using realistic hadronic dynamics and including the Coulomb force. The sensitivity of the observables to the relativistic corrections of one-nucleon electromagnetic current operator is studied. Significant effects of the relativistic spin-orbit charge are found for the vector analyzing powers in the proton-deuteron radiative capture and for the beam-target parallel-antiparallel spin asymmetry in the three-body photodisintegration of 3He.

Four-nucleon system with $Δ$-isobar excitation

The four-nucleon bound state and scattering below three-body breakup threshold are described based on the realistic coupled-channel potential CD Bonn + $Δ$ which allows the excitation of a single nucleon to a $Δ$ isobar. The Coulomb repulsion between protons is included. In the four-nucleon system the two-baryon coupled-channel potential yields effective two-, three- and four-nucleon forces, mediated by the $Δ$ isobar and consistent with each other and with the underlying two-nucleon force. The effect of the four-nucleon force on the studied observables is much smaller than the effect of the three-nucleon force. The inclusion of the $Δ$ isobar is unable to resolve the existing discrepancies with the experimental data.

Evidence of the Coulomb force effects in the cross sections of the deuteron-proton breakup at 130 MeV

High precision cross-section data of the deuteron-proton breakup reaction at 130 MeV deuteron energy are compared with the theoretical predictions obtained with a coupled-channel extension of the CD Bonn potential with virtual Delta-isobar excitation, without and with inclusion of the long-range Coulomb force. The Coulomb effect is studied on the basis of the cross-section data set, extended in this work to about 1500 data points by including breakup geometries characterized by small polar angles of the two protons. The experimental data clearly prefer predictions obtained with the Coulomb interaction included. The strongest effects are observed in regions in which the relative energy of the two protons is the smallest.

New calculation schemes for proton-deuteron scattering including the Coulomb interaction

The Coulomb interaction between the protons is included in the description of proton-deuteron scattering using the screening and renormalization approach in the framework of momentum-space integral equations. Two new calculational schemes are presented that confirm the reliability of the perturbative approach for treating the screened Coulomb interaction in high partial waves, used by us in earlier works.

Momentum-space description of three-nucleon breakup reactions including the Coulomb interaction

The Coulomb interaction between the two protons is included in the calculation of proton-deuteron breakup and of three-body electromagnetic disintegration of ${}^3\mathrm{He}$. The hadron dynamics is based on the purely nucleonic charge-dependent (CD) Bonn potential and its realistic extension CD Bonn + $Δ$ to a coupled-channel two-baryon potential, allowing for single virtual $Δ$-isobar excitation. Calculations are done using integral equations in momentum space. The screening and renormalization approach is employed for including the Coulomb interaction. Convergence of the procedure is found at moderate screening radii. The reliability of the method is demonstrated. The Coulomb effect on breakup observables is seen at all energies in particular kinematic regimes.

Systematic study of three-nucleon force effects in the cross section of the deuteron-proton breakup at 130 MeV

High precision cross-section data of the deuteron-proton breakup reaction at 130 MeV are presented for 72 kinematically complete configurations. The data cover a large region of the available phase space, divided into a systematic grid of kinematical variables. They are compared with theoretical predictions, in which the full dynamics of the three-nucleon (3N) system is obtained in three different ways: realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials are combined with model 3N forces (3NF's) or with an effective 3NF resulting from explicit treatment of the Delta-isobar excitation. Alternatively, the chiral perturbation theory approach is used at the next-to-next-to-leading order with all relevant NN and 3N contributions taken into account. The generated dynamics is then applied to calculate cross-section values by rigorous solution of the 3N Faddeev equations. The comparison of the calculated cross sections with the experimental data shows a clear prefernce for the predictions in which the 3NF's are included. The majority of the experimental data points is well reproduced by the theoretical predictions. The remaining discrepancies are investigated by inspecting cross sections integrated over certain kinematical variables. The procedure of global comparisons leads to establishing regularities in disagreements between the experimental data and the theoretically predicted values of the cross sections. They indicate deficiencies still present in the assumed models of the 3N system dynamics.

Momentum-space treatment of Coulomb interaction in three-nucleon reactions with two protons

The Coulomb interaction between the two protons is included in the calculation of proton-deuteron elastic scattering, radiative proton-deuteron capture and two-body electromagnetic disintegration of ${}^3\mathrm{He}$. Convergence of the procedure is found already at moderate screening radii. The reliability of the method is demonstrated. The Coulomb effect on observables is seen at low energies for the whole kinematic regime. In proton-deuteron elastic scattering at higher energies the Coulomb effect is confined to forward scattering angles; the $Δ$-isobar effect found previously remains unchanged by Coulomb. In electromagnetic reactions Coulomb competes with other effects in a complicated way.

Benchmark calculation for proton-deuteron elastic scattering observables including Coulomb

Two independent calculations of proton-deuteron elastic scattering observables including Coulomb repulsion between the two protons are compared in the proton lab energy region between 3 MeV and 65 MeV. The hadron dynamics is based on the purely nucleonic charge-dependent AV18 potential. Calculations are done both in coordinate space and momentum space. The coordinate-space calculations are based on a variational solution of the three-body Schrödinger equation using a correlated hyperspherical expansion for the wave function. The momentum-space calculations proceed via the solution of the Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas equation using the screened Coulomb potential and the renormalization approach. Both methods agree within 1% on all observables, showing the reliability of both numerical techniques in that energy domain. At energies below three-body breakup threshold the coordinate-space method remains favored whereas at energies higher than 65 MeV the momentum-space approach seems to be more efficient.

Three-body electrodisintegration of the three-nucleon bound state with $Δ$-isobar excitation: Processes below pion-production threshold

Electron scattering from the three-nucleon bound state with two- and three-body disintegration is described. The description uses the purely nucleonic charge-dependent CD-Bonn potential and its coupled-channel extension CD-Bonn + $Δ$. Exact solutions of three-particle equations are employed for the initial and final states of the reactions. The current has one-baryon and two-baryon contributions and couples nucleonic with $Δ$-isobar channels. $Δ$-isobar effects on the observables are isolated. The $Δ$-isobar excitation yields an effective three-nucleon force and effective two- and three-nucleon currents beside other $Δ$-isobar effects; they are mutually consistent.
