First order and stable relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics

Relativistic thermodynamics is derived from kinetic equilibrium in a general frame. Based on a novel interpretation of Lagrange multipliers in the equilibrium state we obtain a generic stable but first order relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics. Although this was believed to be impossible, we circumvent this difficulty by a specific handling of the heat flow.

Zeroth Law compatibility of non-additive thermodynamics

Non-extensive thermodynamics was criticized among others by stating that the Zeroth Law cannot be satisfied with non-additive composition rules. In this paper we determine the general functional form of those non-additive composition rules which are compatible with the Zeroth Law of thermodynamics. We find that this general form is additive for the formal logarithms of the original quantities and the familiar relations of thermodynamics apply to these. Our result offers a possible solution to the longstanding problem about equilibrium between extensive and non-extensive systems or systems with different non-extensivity parameters.

Kinetic equilibrium and relativistic thermodynamics

Relativistic thermodynamics is treated from the point of view of kinetic theory. It is shown that the generalized Jüttner distribution suggested in [1] is compatible with kinetic equilibrium. The requirement of compatibility of kinetic and thermodynamic equilibrium reveals several generalizations of the Gibbs relation where the velocity field is an independent thermodynamic variable.

About the temperature of moving bodies

Relativistic thermodynamics is constructed from the point of view of special relativistic hydrodynamics. A relativistic four-current for heat and a general treatment of thermal equilibrium between moving bodies is presented. The different temperature transformation formulas of Planck and Einstein, Ott, Landsberg and Doppler appear upon particular assumptions about internal heat current.

Weakly nonlocal non-equilibrium thermodynamics - variational principles and Second Law

A general, uniform, rigorous and constructive thermodynamic approach to weakly nonlocal non-equilibrium thermodynamics is reviewed. A method is given to construct and restrict the evolution equations of physical theories according to the Second Law of thermodynamics and considering weakly nonlocal constitutive state spaces. The evolution equations of internal variables, the classical irreversible thermodynamics and Korteweg fluids are treated.

Generic stability of dissipative non-relativistic and relativistic fluids

The linear stability of the homogeneous equilibrium of non-relativistic fluids with mass flux and special relativistic fluids with the absolute value of the energy vector as internal energy is investigated. It is proved that the equilibrium is asymptotically stable in both cases due to purely thermodynamic restrictions; the only requirements are the thermodynamic stability and the nonnegativity of the transport coefficients.

A thermodynamic approach to the relaxation of viscosity and thermal conductivity

A novel higher order theory of relaxation of heat and viscosity is proposed based on corrections to the traditional treatment of the relativistic energy density. In the framework of generalized Bjorken scaling solution to accelerating longitudinal flow we point out that the energy flux can be consequently set to zero in the stationary case, independently of the choice of a specific local rest frame, like the Landau-Lifshitz or Eckart one. We investigate and compare several cooling and re-heating scenarios for the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) within this approach.

Internal energy in dissipative relativistic fluids

Liu procedure is applied to a first order weakly nonlocal special relativistic fluid. It is shown, that a reasonable relativistic theory is and extended one, where the basic state space contains the momentum density. This property follows from the structure of the energy-momentum balance and the Second Law of thermodynamics. Moreover, the entropy depends on the energy density and the momentum density on a given specific way, indicating that the local rest frame energy density cannot be interpreted as the internal energy, the local rest frame momentum density should be considered, too. The corresponding constitutive relations for the stress and the energy flux are derived.

Scalar, vectorial and tensorial damage parameters from the mesoscopic background

In the mesoscopic theory a distribution of different crack sizes and crack orientations is introduced. A scalar damage parameter, a second order damage tensor and a vectorial damage parameter are defined in terms of this distribution function. As an example of a constitutive quantity the free energy density is given as a function of the damage tensor. This equation is reduced in the uniaxial case to a function of the damage vector and in case of a special geometry to a function of the scalar damage parameter.

Relativistic hydrodynamics - causality and stability

Causality and stability in relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics are important conceptual issues. We argue that causality is not restricted to hyperbolic set of differential equations. E.g. heat conduction equation can be causal considering the physical validity of the theory. Furthermore we propose a new concept of relativistic internal energy that clearly separates the dissipative and non-dissipative effects. We prove that with this choice we remove all known instabilities of the linear response approximation of viscous and heat conducting relativistic fluids. In this paper the Eckart choice of the velocity field is applied.

Internal variables and dynamic degrees of freedom

Dynamic degrees of freedom and internal variables are treated in a uniform way. The unification is achieved by means of the introduction of a dual internal variable. This duality provides the corresponding evolution equations depending on whether the Onsager-Casimir reciprocity relations are satisfied or not.

On the evolution of higher order fluxes in non-equilibrium thermodynamics

The connection between the balance structure of the evolution equations of higher order fluxes and different forms of the entropy current is investigated on the example of rigid heat conductors. Compatibility conditions of the theories are given. Thermodynamic closure relations are derived.

Unique additive information measures - Boltzmann-Gibbs-Shannon, Fisher and beyond

It is proved that the only additive and isotropic information measure that can depend on the probability distribution and also on its first derivative is a linear combination of the Boltzmann-Gibbs-Shannon and Fisher information measures. Power law equilibrium distributions are found as a result of the interaction of the two terms. The case of second order derivative dependence is investigated and a corresponding additive information measure is given.

The effects of nonlocality on the evolution of higher order fluxes in non-equilibrium thermodynamics

The role of gradient dependent constitutive spaces is investigated on the example of Extended Thermodynamics of rigid heat conductors. Different levels of nonlocality are developed and the different versions of extended thermodynamics are classified. The local form of the entropy density plays a crucial role in the investigations. The entropy inequality is solved under suitable constitutive assumptions. Balance form of evolution equations is obtained in special cases. Closure relations are derived on a phenomenological level.
