Chiral Magnetic Effect in finite-size samples of parity-breaking Weyl semimetals

We study the static electric current due to the Chiral Magnetic Effect in samples of Weyl semimetals with slab geometry, where the magnetic field is parallel to the boundaries of the slab. We use the Wilson-Dirac Hamiltonian as a simplest model of parity-breaking Weyl semimetal with two-band structure. We find that the CME current is strongly localized at the open boundaries of the slab, where the current density in the direction of the magnetic field approaches the conventional value $j = μ_5 B /2 π^2$ at sufficiently small values of the chiral chemical potential $μ_5$ and magnetic field $B$. On the other hand, very large values of magnetic field tend to suppress the CME response. We observe that the localization width of the current is independent of the slab width and is given by the magnetic length $l_B = 1/\sqrt{B}$ when $μ_5 \ll \sqrt{B}$. In the opposite regime when $μ_5 \gg \sqrt{B}$ the localization width is determined solely by $μ_5$

Complex Saddles in Two-dimensional Gauge Theory

We study numerically the saddle point structure of two-dimensional (2D) lattice gauge theory, represented by the Gross-Witten-Wadia unitary matrix model. The saddle points are in general complex-valued, even though the original integration variables and action are real. We confirm the trans-series/instanton gas structure in the weak-coupling phase, and identify a new complex-saddle interpretation of non-perturbative effects in the strong-coupling phase. In both phases, eigenvalue tunneling refers to eigenvalues moving off the real interval, into the complex plane, and the weak-to-strong coupling phase transition is driven by saddle condensation.

Applications of lattice QCD techniques for condensed matter systems

We review the application of lattice QCD techniques, most notably the Hybrid Monte-Carlo (HMC) simulations, to first-principle study of tight-binding models of crystalline solids with strong inter-electron interactions. After providing a basic introduction into the HMC algorithm as applied to condensed matter systems, we review HMC simulations of graphene, which in the recent years have helped to understand the semi-metal behavior of clean suspended graphene at the quantitative level. We also briefly summarize other novel physical results obtained in these simulations. Then we comment on the applicability of Hybrid Monte-Carlo to topological insulators and Dirac and Weyl semi-metals and highlight some of the relevant open physical problems. Finally, we also touch upon the lattice strong-coupling expansion technique as applied to condensed matter systems.

Chiral magnetic conductivity in an interacting lattice model of parity-breaking Weyl semimetal

We report on the mean-field study of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) in static magnetic fields within a simple model of a parity-breaking Weyl semimetal given by the lattice Wilson-Dirac Hamiltonian with constant chiral chemical potential. We consider both the mean-field renormalization of the model parameters and nontrivial corrections to the CME originating from re-summed ladder diagrams with arbitrary number of loops. We find that on-site repulsive interactions affect the chiral magnetic conductivity almost exclusively through the enhancement of the renormalized chiral chemical potential. Our results suggest that nontrivial corrections to the chiral magnetic conductivity due to inter-fermion interactions are not relevant in practice, since they only become important when the CME response is strongly suppressed by the large gap in the energy spectrum.

Feasibility of Diagrammatic Monte-Carlo based on weak-coupling expansion in asymptotically free theories: case study of $O(N)$ sigma-model in the large-$N$ limit

We discuss the feasibility of applying Diagrammatic Monte-Carlo algorithms to the weak-coupling expansions of asymptotically free quantum field theories, taking the large-$N$ limit of the $O(N)$ sigma-model as the simplest example where exact results are available. We use stereographic mapping from the sphere to the real plane to set up the perturbation theory, which results in a small bare mass term proportional to the coupling $λ$. Counting the powers of coupling associated with higher-order interaction vertices, we arrive at the double-series representation for the dynamically generated mass gap in powers of both $λ$ and $\log(λ)$, which converges quite quickly to the exact non-perturbative answer. We also demonstrate that it is feasible to obtain the coefficients of these double series by a Monte-Carlo sampling in the space of Feynman diagrams. In particular, the sign problem of such sampling becomes milder at small $λ$, that is, close to the continuum limit.

Deconfinement transition in two-flavour lattice QCD with dynamical overlap fermions

We study the deconfinement transition in two-flavour lattice QCD with dynamical overlap fermions. Our simulations have been carried out on a $16^3 \times 6$ lattice at a pion mass around 500 MeV with a special HMC algorithm without any approximation such as fixed topology. We consider several temperatures from 220 MeV which is close to the deconfinement to 280 MeV which is above it. The dependence of the Polyakov loop, the chiral condensate, the Dirac spectra and the connected part of chiral susceptibility on the inverse gauge coupling has been studied. Our data indicates that the transition point lies between $β= 7.6$ and $β= 8.1$, but a more precise determination is not possible with our present statistics.

Surface states of massive Dirac fermions with separated Weyl nodes

We derive the spectra of surface states for massive Dirac Hamiltonians with either momentum or energy separation between the left- and right-handed Weyl nodes. Momentum separation between the Weyl nodes corresponds to the explicitly broken time-reversal symmetry and the energy separation - to broken parity. Such Hamiltonians provide the simplest model description of Weyl semimetals. We find that the only effect of the energy separation between the Weyl nodes is to decrease the Fermi velocity in the linear dispersion relation of the surface states of massive Dirac Hamiltonian. In the case of broken time-reversal symmetry, the spectrum of surface states interpolates in a nontrivial way between the Fermi arc-type and the Dirac cone-type dispersion relations. In particular we find that for all values of the mass and the momentum separation between the Weyl nodes the surface states only exist in a strip of finite width in momentum space. We give also some simpler examples of surface states in order to make these notes more pedagogical.

Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and the Chiral Magnetic Effect for interacting Dirac fermions with chiral imbalance

We report on a mean-field study of spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry for Dirac fermions with contact interactions in the presence of chiral imbalance, which is modelled by nonzero chiral chemical potential. We point out that chiral imbalance lowers the vacuum energy of Dirac fermions, which leads to the increase of the renormalized chiral chemical potential upon chiral symmetry breaking. The critical coupling strength for the transition to the broken phase is slightly lowered as the chiral chemical potential is increased, and the transition itself becomes milder. Furthermore, we study the chiral magnetic conductivity in different phases and find that it grows both in the perturbative weak-coupling regime and in the strongly coupled phase with broken chiral symmetry. In the strong coupling regime the chiral magnetic effect is saturated by vector-like bound states (vector mesons) with mixed transverse polarizations. General pattern of meson mixing in the presence of chiral imbalance is also considered. We discuss the relevance of our study for Weyl semimetals and strongly interacting QCD matter. Finally, we comment on the ambiguity of the regularization of the vacuum energy of Dirac fermions in the presence of chirality imbalance.

A Method to Calculate Conserved Currents and Fermionic Force for the Lanczos Approximation to the Overlap Dirac Operator

The overlap Dirac operator obeys the Ginsparg-Wilson equation and offers a possibility to introduce chiral symmetry on the lattice. Evaluating the overlap operator is numerically very expensive and one has to rely on approximation methods. At finite chemical potential the overlap operator can be efficiently computed with the two-sided Lanczos algorithm. To calculate conserved currents on the lattice, or to evaluate the fermionic force in HMC calculations, one needs to compute derivatives of the Dirac operator with respect to gauge fields. In this paper we present a method to simultaneously compute the action of the overlap operator and its derivative on a source vector.

A lattice mean-field study of the phase diagram of interacting parity-breaking Weyl semimetals

We perform a mean-field study of the phase diagram of interacting Weyl semimetals with broken parity, that is, with different densities of right- and left-handed quasiparticles. As a simple model system, we consider the Wilson-Dirac Hamiltonian with the chiral chemical potential and on-site repulsive interactions. We find that the chiral chemical potential somewhat shrinks the region of the pion condensation (Aoki phase) in the parameter space of the bare mass and the interaction strength, so that the condensation thresholds are at smaller interaction strengths. The renormalized chiral chemical potential monotonously grows with interaction strength everywhere in the phase diagram, and only the growth rate is discontinuous across the phase transition lines. These findings are in full agreement with previous results obtained by one of the authors for the continuum Dirac Hamiltonian, except for the fact that for our lattice model with explicitly broken chiral symmetry the boundaries of the Aoki phase remain sharp second-order phase transitions even at nonzero chiral chemical potential and there are no signatures of Cooper-type instabilities in the weakly interacting regime.

Deconfinement transition in two-flavour lattice QCD with dynamical overlap fermions in an external magnetic field

We study the influence of an external magnetic field on the deconfinement transition in two-flavour lattice QCD with physical quark charges. We use dynamical overlap fermions without any approximation such as fixed topology and perform simulations on a $16^3 \times 6$ lattice and at a pion mass around $500MeV$. The pion mass (as well as the lattice spacing) was determined in independent runs on $12^3 \times 24$ lattices. We consider two temperatures, one of which is close to the deconfinement transition and one which is above. Within our limited statistics the dependence of the Polyakov loop and chiral condensate on the magnetic field supports the "inverse magnetic catalysis" scenario in which the transition temperature decreases as the field strength grows for temperature not to far above the critical temperature.

Anomalous transport with overlap fermions

Anomalous correlators of vector and axial currents which enter the Kubo formulae for the chiral magnetic and the chiral separation conductivities are explicitly calculated for free overlap fermions on the lattice. The results are confronted with continuum calculations in the finite-temperature regularization, and a subtle point of such regularization for chiral magnetic conductivity related to the correct counting of the chiral states is highlighted. In agreement with some previous claims in the literature, we find that in a lattice regularization which respects gauge invariance, the chiral magnetic conductivity vanishes. We point out that the relation of anomalous transport coefficients to axial anomaly is nontrivial due to the non-commutativity of their infrared limit and the Taylor expansion in baryon or chiral chemical potential. In particular, we argue that the vector and axial Ward identities fix the asymptotic behavior of anomalous current-current correlators in the limit of large momenta. Basing on the work of Knecht et al. on the perturbative non-renormalization of the transverse part of the correlator of two vector and one axial currents, we demonstrate that the relation of the anomalous vector-vector correlator to axial anomaly holds perturbatively in massless QCD but might be subject to non-perturbative corrections. Finally, we identify kinematical regimes in which the anomalous transport coefficients can be extracted from lattice measurements.

Axial Magnetic Effect and Chiral Vortical Effect with free lattice chiral fermions

Following the recent work by Braguta et al., we perform an indirect calculation of the chiral vortical conductivity with free lattice overlap fermions by measuring the response of the energy flow to the constant axial magnetic field. We find that the measurements are contaminated by very large finite-volume artifacts. However, the continuum result for finite-temperature contribution to the chiral vortical conductivity (T^2/12) is still reproduced in the limit of infinite volume at fixed temperature.

Electric charge catalysis by magnetic fields and a nontrivial holonomy

We describe a generic mechanism by which a system of Dirac fermions in thermal equilibrium acquires electric charge in an external magnetic field. To this end the fermions should have an additional quantum number, isospin or color, and should be subject to a second magnetic field, which distinguishes the isospin/color, as well as to a corresponding isospin chemical potential. The role of the latter can be also played by a nontrivial holonomy (Polyakov loop) along the Euclidean time direction. The charge is accumulated since the degeneracies of occupied lowest Landau levels for particles of positive isospin and anti-particles of negative isospin are different. We discuss two physical systems, where this phenomenon can be realized. One is monolayer graphene, where the isospin is associated with two valleys in the Brillouin zone and the strain-induced pseudo-magnetic field acts differently on charge carriers in different valleys. Another is hot QCD, for which the relevant non-Abelian field configurations with both nonzero chromo-magnetic field and a nontrivial Polyakov loop can be realized as calorons - topological solutions of Yang-Mills equations at finite temperature. The induced electric charge on the caloron field configuration is studied numerically. We argue that due to the fluctuations of holonomy external magnetic field should tend to suppress charge fluctuations in the quark-gluon plasma and estimate the importance of this effect for off-central heavy-ion collisions.

Overlap Dirac operator with chiral chemical potential and Chiral Magnetic Effect on the lattice

A self-consistent construction of the overlap lattice Dirac operator coupled to chiral chemical potential is proposed. With the help of the constructed operator we compute electric current induced by a constant magnetic field (Chiral Magnetic Effect). We find that the result disagrees with the one predicted by anomaly-based arguments and comment on the origin of this discrepancy. We demonstrate that a straightforward lattice calculation with a constant magnetic field and a uniform chiral chemical potential in fact corresponds to an infrared singularity in the dimensionally reduced polarization tensor and hence yields the result which is extremely sensitive to infrared regulators such as finite volume or finite temperature.

Monte-Carlo study of the semimetal-insulator phase transition in monolayer graphene with realistic inter-electron interaction potential

We report on the results of the first-principle numerical study of spontaneous breaking of chiral (sublattice) symmetry in suspended monolayer graphene due to electrostatic interaction, which takes into account the screening of Coulomb potential by electrons on $σ$-orbitals. In contrast to the results of previous numerical simulations with unscreened potential, we find that suspended graphene is in the conducting phase with unbroken chiral symmetry. This finding is in agreement with recent experimental results by the Manchester group \cite{Elias et al, 2011}. Further, by artificially increasing the interaction strength we demonstrate that suspended graphene is quite close to the phase transition associated with spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, which suggests that fluctuations of chirality and nonperturbative effects might still be quite important.

Topological and magnetic properties of the QCD vacuum probed by overlap fermions

We study some of the local CP-odd and magnetic properties of the non-Abelian vacuum with use of overlap fermions within the quenched lattice gauge theory. Among these properties are the following: inhomogeneous spatial distribution of the topological charge density (chirality for massless fermions) in SU(2) gluodynamics (for uncooled gauge configurations the chirality is localized on low-dimensional defects with d=2..3, while a sequence of cooling steps gives rise to four-dimensional instantons and hence a four-dimensional structure of the chirality distribution); finite local fluctuations of the chirality growing with the strength of an external magnetic field; magnetization and susceptibility of the QCD vacuum in SU(3) theory; magnetic catalysis of the chiral symmetry breaking, and the electric conductivity of the QCD vacuum in strong magnetic fields.
