Spatial patterns of dissipative polariton solitons in semiconductor microcavities

Semiconductor microcavities operating in the polaritonic regime are highly non-linear, high speed systems due to the unique half-light, half-matter nature of polaritons. Here, we report for the first time the observation of propagating multi-soliton polariton patterns consisting of multi-peak structures either along (x) or perpendicular to (y) the direction of propagation. Soliton arrays of up to 5 solitons are observed, with the number of solitons controlled by the size or power of the triggering laser pulse. The break-up along the x direction occurs due to interplay of bistability, negative effective mass and polariton-polariton scattering, while in the y direction the break-up results from nonlinear phase-dependent interactions of propagating fronts. We show the experimental results are in good agreement with numerical modelling. Our observations are a step towards ultrafast all-optical signal processing using sequences of solitons as bits of information.

Ultrafast supercontinuum fiber-laser based pump-probe scanning MOKE microscope for the investigation of electron spin dynamics in semiconductors at cryogenic temperatures with picosecond time and micrometer spatial resolution

We describe a two-color pump-probe scanning magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) microscope which we have developed to investigate electron spin phenomena in semiconductors at cryogenic temperatures with picosecond time and micrometer spatial resolution. The key innovation of our microscope is the usage of an ultrafast `white light' supercontinuum fiber-laser source which provides access to the whole visible and near-infrared spectral range. Our Kerr microscope allows for the independent selection of the excitation and detection energy while avoiding the necessity to synchronize the pulse trains of two separate picosecond laser systems. The ability to independently tune the pump and probe wavelength enables the investigation of the influence of excitation energy on the optically induced electron spin dynamics in semiconductors. We demonstrate picosecond real-space imaging of the diffusive expansion of optically excited electron spin packets in a (110) GaAs quantum well sample to illustrate the capabilities of the instrument.

The effects of spin-dependent interactions on polarisation of bright polariton solitons

We report on the spin properties of bright polariton solitons supported by an external pump to compensate losses. We observe robust circularly polarised solitons when a circularly polarised pump is applied, a result attributed to phase synchronisation between nondegenerate TE and TM polarised polariton modes at high momenta. For the case of a linearly polarised pump either s+ or s- circularly polarised bright solitons can be switched on in a controlled way by a s+ or s- writing beam respectively. This feature arises directly from the widely differing interaction strengths between co- and cross-circularly polarised polaritons. In the case of orthogonally linearly polarised pump and writing beams, the soliton emission on average is found to be unpolarised, suggesting strong spatial evolution of the soliton polarisation, a conclusion supported by polarisation correlation measurements. The observed results are in agreement with theory, which predicts stable circularly polarised solitons and unstable linearly polarised solitons resulting in spatial evolution of their polarisation.

Effect of polariton-polariton interactions on the excitation spectrum of a non-equilibrium condensate in a periodic potential

Polariton condensates are investigated in periodical potentials created by surface acoustic waves using both resonant and non-resonant optical excitation. Under resonant pumping condensates are formed due to polariton parametric scattering from the pump. In this case the single particle dispersion in the presence of the condensate shows a strong reduction of the energy gap arising from the acoustic modulation, indicating efficient screening of the surface acoustic wave potential by spatial modulation of the polariton density. The observed results are in good agreement with a model based on generalised Gross-Pitaveskii equations with account taken of the spatial dependence of the exciton energy landscape. In the case of incoherent, non-resonant pumping coexisting non-equilibrium condensates with s- and p- type wavefunctions are observed, which have different energies, symmetry and spatial coherence. The energy splitting between these condensate states is also reduced with respect to the gap of the one particle spectrum below threshold, but the screening effect is less pronounced than in the case of resonantly pumped system due to weaker modulation of the pump state.

Observation of bright polariton solitons in a semiconductor microcavity

Microcavity polaritons are composite half-light half-matter quasi-particles, which have recently been demonstrated to exhibit rich physical properties, such as non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation, parametric scattering and superfluidity. At the same time, polaritons have some important advantages over photons for information processing applications, since their excitonic component leads to weaker diffraction and stronger inter-particle interactions, implying, respectively, tighter localization and lower powers for nonlinear functionality. Here we present the first experimental observations of bright polariton solitons in a strongly coupled semiconductor microcavity. The polariton solitons are shown to be non-diffracting high density wavepackets, that are strongly localised in real space with a corresponding broad spectrum in momentum space. Unlike solitons known in other matter-wave systems such as Bose condensed ultracold atomic gases, they are non-equilibrium and rely on a balance between losses and external pumping. Microcavity polariton solitons are excited on picosecond timescales, and thus have significant benefits for ultrafast switching and transfer of information over their light only counterparts, semiconductor cavity lasers (VCSELs), which have only nanosecond response time.

Anisotropic magnetic deflagration in single crystals of Gd5Ge4

Experimental evidence of the anisotropy of the magnetic deflagration associated with the low-temperature first order antiferromagnetic (AFM) --> ferromagnetic (FM) phase-transition in single crystals of Gd5Ge4 is reported. The deflagrations have been induced by controlled pulses of surface acoustic waves (SAW) allowing us to explore both the magnetic field and temperature dependencies on the characteristic times of the phenomenon. The study was done using samples with different geometries and configurations between the SAW pulses and the direction of the applied magnetic field with respect to the three main crystallographic directions of the samples. The effect of temperature is nearly negligible, whereas observed strong magnetic field dependence correlates with the magnetic anisotropy of the sample. Finally, the role of the SAW pulses in both the ignition and formation of the deflagration front was also studied, and we show that the thermal diffusivity of Gd5Ge4 must be anisotropic, following \kappaa>\kappab>\kappac.

On the effective action of the vacuum photon splitting in Lorentz-violating QED

We consider one-loop radiative corrections from Lorentz- and CPT- violating extended QED to address the specific problem of finding explicitly an effective action describing amplitude of photon triple splitting. We show that it is not possible to find a nonzero photon triple splitting effective action, at least by using the derivative expansion method (at zero external momenta), up to leading order in the Lorentz- and CPT- violating parameter.

Mesoscopic spin confinement during acoustically induced transport

Long coherence lifetimes of electron spins transported using moving potential dots are shown to result from the mesoscopic confinement of the spin vector. The confinement dimensions required for spin control are governed by the characteristic spin-orbit length of the electron spins, which must be larger than the dimensions of the dot potential. We show that the coherence lifetime of the electron spins is independent of the local carrier densities within each potential dot and that the precession frequency, which is determined by the Dresselhaus contribution to the spin-orbit coupling, can be modified by varying the sample dimensions resulting in predictable changes in the spin-orbit length and, consequently, in the spin coherence lifetime.

Phonon-Induced Quantum Magnetic Deflagration in Mn12

A comprehensive set of experiments on the effect of high-frequency surface acoustic waves, SAWs, in the spin relaxation in Mn12-acetate is presented. We have studied the quantum magnetic deflagration induced by SAWs under various experimental conditions extending the data shown in a very recent paper [A. Hernandez-Minguez et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 217205 (2005)]. We have focused our study on the dependence of both the ignition time and the propagation speed of the magnetic avalanches on the frequency, amplitude, and duration of the SAW pulses in experiments performed under different temperatures and external magnetic fields.

Quantum Magnetic Deflagration in Mn12 Acetate

We report controlled ignition of magnetization reversal avalanches by surface acoustic waves in a single crystal of Mn12 acetate. Our data show that the speed of the avalanche exhibits maxima on the magnetic field at the tunneling resonances of Mn12. Combined with the evidence of magnetic deflagration in Mn12 acetate (Suzuki et al., cond-mat/0506569) this suggests a novel physical phenomenon: deflagration assisted by quantum tunneling.

High contrast optical modulation by surface acoustic waves

Numerical Calculations are employed to study the modulation of light by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in photonic band gap (PBG) structures. The on/off contrast ratio in PBG switch based on optical cavity is determined as a function of the SAW induced dielectric modulation. We show that these structures exhibit high contrast ratios even for moderate acousto-optic coupling
