Laser-noise-induced correlations and anti-correlations in Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

High degrees of intensity correlation between two independent lasers were observed after propagation through a rubidium vapor cell in which they generate Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT). As the optical field intensities are increased, the correlation changes sign (becoming anti-correlation). The experiment was performed in a room temperature rubidium cell, using two diode lasers tuned to the $^{85}$Rb $D_2$ line ($λ= 780$nm). The cross-correlation spectral function for the pump and probe fields is numerically obtained by modeling the temporal dynamics of both field phases as diffusing processes. We explored the dependence of the atomic response on the atom-field Rabi frequencies, optical detuning and Doppler width. The results show that resonant phase-noise to amplitude-noise conversion is at the origin of the observed signal and the change in sign for the correlation coefficient can be explained as a consequence of the competition between EIT and Raman resonance processes.

Experimental observation of three-color optical quantum correlations

Quantum correlations between bright pump, signal, and idler beams produced by an optical parametric oscillator, all with different frequencies, are experimentally demonstrated. We show that the degree of entanglement between signal and idler fields is improved by using information of pump fluctuations. This is the first observation of three-color optical quantum correlations.

Particle acoustic detection in gravitational wave aluminum resonant antennas

The results on cosmic rays detected by the gravitational antenna NAUTILUS have motivated an experiment (RAP) based on a suspended cylindrical bar, which is made of the same aluminum alloy as NAUTILUS and is exposed to a high energy electron beam. Mechanical vibrations originate from the local thermal expansion caused by warming up due to the energy lost by particles crossing the material. The aim of the experiment is to measure the amplitude of the fundamental longitudinal vibration at different temperatures. We report on the results obtained down to a temperature of about 4 K, which agree at the level of about 10% with the predictions of the model describing the underlying physical process.

A Scintillating-fiber Beam Profile Monitor for the DAFNE BTF

A scintillating-fiber beam profile detector has been designed, built and tested, for the monitoring of the position and size of the electron beam of the DAFNE, the recently commissioned electron beam-test facility at the Frascati LNF. A description of the detector construction and assembly, together with the results achieved during the 2003-2004 run, are here reported.

Noise spectroscopy of non-linear magneto optical resonances in Rb vapor

Nonlinear magneto-optical (NMO) resonances occurring for near-zero magnetic field are studied in Rb vapor using light-noise spectroscopy. With a balanced detection polarimeter, we observe high contrast variations of the noise power (at fixed analysis frequency) carried by diode laser light resonant with the 5S$_{1/2}(F=2) \to 5$P$_{1/2}(F=1) $ transition of $^{87}$Rb and transmitted through a rubidium vapor cell, as a function of magnetic field $B$. A symmetric resonance doublet of anti-correlated noise is observed for orthogonal polarizations around $B=0 $ as a manifestation of ground state coherence. We also observe sideband noise resonances when the magnetic field produces an atomic Larmor precession at a frequency corresponding to one half of the analysis frequency. The resonances on the light fluctuations are the consequence of phase to amplitude noise conversion owing to nonlinear coherence effects in the response of the atomic medium to the fluctuating field. A theoretical model (derived from linearized Bloch equations) is presented that reproduces the main qualitative features of the experimental signals under simple assumptions.

Inhibition of electromagnetically induced absorption due to excited state decoherence in Rb vapor

The explanation presented in [Taichenachev et al, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 61}, 011802 (2000)] according to which the electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) resonances observed in degenerate two level systems are due to coherence transfer from the excited to the ground state is experimentally tested in a Hanle type experiment observing the parametric resonance on the $% D1$ line of $^{87}$Rb. While EIA occurs in the $F=1\to F^{\prime}=2 $ transition in a cell containing only $Rb$ vapor, collisions with a buffer gas ($30 torr$ of $Ne$) cause the sign reversal of this resonance as a consequence of collisional decoherence of the excited state. A theoretical model in good qualitative agreement with the experimental results is presented.

Temporal build-up of electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption resonances in degenerate two-level transitions

The temporal evolution of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and absorption (EIA) coherence resonances in pump-probe spectroscopy of degenerate two-level atomic transition is studied for light intensities below saturation. Analytical expression for the transient absorption spectra are given for simple model systems and a model for the calculation of the time dependent response of realistic atomic transitions, where the Zeeman degeneracy is fully accounted for, is presented. EIT and EIA resonances have a similar (opposite sign) time dependent lineshape, however, the EIA evolution is slower and thus narrower lines are observed for long interaction time. Qualitative agreement with the theoretical predictions is obtained for the transient probe absorption on the $^{85}Rb$ $D_{2}$ line in an atomic beam experiment.

The KLOE/DAPHNE Status Logging, Analysis and Database System

The KLOE experiment at the Frascati phi-factory DAPHNE, designed to measure $\Re(ε^\prime/ε)$, began preliminary data taking in the Fall of 1999. A large database structure, which logs information coming from the DAPHNE control system and the KLOE slow control and data acquisition systems, has been developed. Data from detector monitoring, online event processing and machine operating conditions are easily accessible for online and offline analysis by means of Web tools and histogramming tools. The system allows powerful real-time data correlations which are necessary for the ongoing program of luminosity and background improvements. Data flow and handling processes are presented.

Comparative study of the transient evolution of Hanle EIT/EIA resonances

The temporal evolutions of coherent resonances corresponding to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and absorption (EIA) were observed in a Hanle absorption experiment carried on the $D_{2}$ lines of $% ^{87}$Rb vapor by suddenly turning the magnetic field on or off. The main features of the experimental observations are well reproduced by a theoretical model based on Bloch equation where the atomic level degeneracy has been fully accounted for. Similar (opposite phase) evolutions were observed at low optical field intensities for Hanle/EIT or Hanle/EIA resonances. Unlike the Hanle/EIA\ transients which are increasingly shorter for driving field intensities approaching saturation, the $B\neq 0$ transient of the Hanle/EIT signal at large driving field intensities present a long decay time approaching the atomic transit time. Such counterintuitive behavior is interpreted as a consequence of the Zeno effect.

Electromagnetically induced absorption in magneto-optically trapped atoms

Electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) was observed on a sample of $% ^{85}Rb$ in a magneto-optical trap using low intensity cw copropagating pump and probe optical fields. At moderate trapping field intensity, the EIA spectrum is determined by the Zeeman effect produced on the atomic ground-state by the trapping quadrupolar magnetic field. The use of EIA spectroscopy for the magnetic field mapping of cold atomic samples is illustrated.
