$\mathcal{R}^2$ effectively from Inflation to Dark Energy

We consider the single-parameter $\mathcal{R}+ c\mathcal{R}^2$ gravitational action and use constraints from astrophysics and the laboratory to derive a natural relation between the coefficient $c$ and the value of the cosmological constant. We find that the renormalisation of $c$ from the energy of the inflationary phase to the infrared, where the acceleration of the expansion of the Universe takes place, is correlated with the evolution of the vacuum energy. Our results suggest that the coefficient of the $\mathcal{R}^2$ term may provide an unexpected bridge between high-energy physics and cosmological phenomena such as inflation and dark energy.

Analytical evaluation of cosmological correlation functions

Using the Schwinger-Keldysh-formalism, reformulated in arXiv:2108.01695 as an effective field theory in Euclidean anti-de Sitter, we evaluate the one-loop cosmological four-point function of a conformally coupled interacting scalar field in de Sitter. Recasting the Witten cosmological correlator as flat space Feynman integrals, we evaluate the one-loop cosmological four-point functions in de Sitter space in terms of single-valued multiple polylogarithms. From it we derive anomalous dimensions and OPE coefficients of the dual conformal field theory at space-like, future infinity. In particular, we find an interesting degeneracy in the anomalous dimensions relating operators of neighboring spins.

The SAGEX Review on Scattering Amplitudes, Chapter 13: Post-Minkowskian expansion from Scattering Amplitudes

The post-Minkowskian expansion of Einstein's general theory of relativity has received much attention in recent years due to the possibility of harnessing the computational power of modern amplitude calculations in such a classical context. In this brief review, we focus on the post-Minkowskian expansion as applied to the two-body problem in general relativity without spin, and we describe how relativistic quantum field theory can be used to greatly simplify analytical calculations based on the Einstein-Hilbert action. Subtleties related to the extraction of classical physics from such quantum mechanical calculations highlight the care which must be taken when both positive and negative powers of Planck's constant are at play. In the process of obtaining classical results in both Einstein gravity and supergravity, one learns new aspects of quantum field theory that are obscured when using units in which Planck's constant is set to unity. The scattering amplitude approach provides a self-contained framework for deriving the two-body scattering valid in all regimes of energy. There is hope that the full impact of amplitude computations in this field may significantly alter the way in which gravitational wave predictions will advance in the coming years.

Post-Minkowskian Radial Action from Soft Limits and Velocity Cuts

We consider gravitational massive scalar-scalar scattering from unitarity and demonstrate how intermediate soft graviton behavior and the concept of extracting classical physics from localization of integrands on velocity cuts devise an efficient extraction scheme for computing the classical post-Minkowskian radial action perturbatively. We demonstrate the computational efficiency by deriving the scattering amplitudes in the probe regime to the fifth post-Minkowskian order in arbitrary dimensions.

The Amplitude for Classical Gravitational Scattering at Third Post-Minkowskian Order

We compute the scattering amplitude for classical black-hole scattering to third order in the Post-Minkowskian expansion, keeping all terms needed to derive the scattering angle to that order from the eikonal formalism. Our results confirm a conjectured relation between the real and imaginary parts of the amplitude by Di Vecchia, Heissenberg, Russo, and Veneziano, and are in agreement with a recent computation by Damour based on radiation reaction in general relativity.

SL(2,Z)-invariance and D-instanton contributions to the $D^6 R^4$ interaction

The modular invariant coefficient of the $D^6R^4$ interaction in the low energy expansion of type~IIB string theory has been conjectured to be a solution of an inhomogeneous Laplace eigenvalue equation, obtained by considering the toroidal compactification of two-loop Feynman diagrams of eleven-dimensional supergravity. In this paper we determine the exact $SL(2,\mathbb Z)$-invariant solution $f(x+iy)$ to this differential equation satisfying an appropriate moderate growth condition as $y\to \infty$ (the weak coupling limit). The solution is presented as a Fourier series with modes $\widehat{f}_n(y) e^{2πi n x}$, where the mode coefficients, $\widehat{f}_n(y)$ are bilinear in $K$-Bessel functions. Invariance under $SL(2,\mathbb Z)$ requires these modes to satisfy the nontrivial boundary condition $ \widehat{f}_n(y) =O(y^{-2})$ for small $y$, which uniquely determines the solution. The large-$y$ expansion of $f(x+iy)$ contains the known perturbative (power-behaved) terms, together with precisely-determined exponentially decreasing contributions that have the form expected of D-instantons, anti-D-instantons and D-instanton/anti-D-instanton pairs.

Scattering Equations and String Theory Amplitudes

Scattering equations for tree-level amplitudes are viewed in the context of string theory. As a result of the comparison we are led to define a new dual model which coincides with string theory in both the small and large $α'$ limit, and whose solution is found algebraically on the surface of solutions to the scattering equations. Because it has support only on the scattering equations, it can be solved exactly, yielding a simple resummed model for $α'$-corrections to all orders. We use the same idea to generalize scattering equations to amplitudes with fermions and any mixture of scalars, gluons and fermions. In all cases checked we find exact agreement with known results.

The vanishing volume of D=4 superspace

The volume of on-shell D=4, N=8 superspace is shown to vanish. Despite this, it is shown that there is a fully supersymmetric and duality-invariant candidate d^8 R^4 counterterm corresponding to an anticipated seven-loop logarithmic divergence in D=4. We construct this counterterm explicitly and also give the complete nonlinear extension of the 1/8-BPS d^6 R^4 invariant. Similar results are derived for N=4,5 & 6.

A note on topological amplitudes in hybrid string theory

We study four-dimensional compactifications of type II superstrings on Calabi-Yau spaces in the hybrid formalism. Chiral and twisted-chiral interactions are rederived, which involve the coupling of the compactification moduli to two powers of the Weyl-tensor and of the derivative of the universal tensor field-strength. We review the formalism and provide details of some of its technicalities.

Covariant One-Loop Amplitudes in D=11

We generalize to the eleven-dimensional superparticle Berkovits' prescription for loop computations in the pure spinor approach to covariant quantization of the superstring. Using these ten- and eleven-dimensional results, we compute covariantly the following one-loop amplitudes: C\wedge X_8 in M-theory; B\wedge X_8 in type II string theory and F^4 in type I. We also verify the consistency of the formalism in eleven dimensions by recovering the correct classical action from tree-level amplitudes. As the superparticle is only a first approximation to the supermembrane, we comment on the possibility of extending this construction to the latter. Finally, we elaborate on the relationship between the present BRST language and the spinorial cohomology approach to corrections of the effective action.

Heterotic / type I duality and D-brane instantons

We study heterotic/type I duality in d=8,9 uncompactified dimensions. We consider the special (``BPS saturated'') F^4 and R^4 terms in the effective one-loop heterotic action, which are expected to be non-perturbatively exact. Under the standard duality map these translate to tree-level, perturbative and non-perturbative contributions on the type I side. We check agreement with the one-loop open string calculation, and discuss the higher-order perturbative contributions, which arise because of the mild non-holomorphicities of the heterotic elliptic genus. We put the heterotic world-sheet instanton corrections in a form that can be motivated as arising from a D-brane instanton calculation on the type-I side.

One loop in eleven dimensions

Four-graviton scattering in eleven-dimensional supergravity is considered at one loop compactified on one, two and three-dimensional tori. The dependence on the toroidal geometry determines the known perturbative and non-perturbative terms in the corresponding processes in type II superstring theories in ten, nine and eight dimensions. The ultra-violet divergence must be regularized so that it has a precisely determined finite value that is consistent both with T-duality in nine dimensions and with eleven-dimensional supersymmetry.
