Lie-Poisson gauge theories and $\kappa$-Minkowski electrodynamics

We consider gauge theories on Poisson manifolds emerging as semiclassical approximations of noncommutative spacetime with Lie algebra type noncommutativity. We prove an important identity, which allows to obtain simple and manifestly gauge-covariant expressions for the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion, the Bianchi and the Noether identities. We discuss the non-Lagrangian equations of motion, and apply our findings to the $\kappa$-Minkowski case. We construct a family of exact solutions of the deformed Maxwell equations in the vacuum. In the classical limit, these solutions recover plane waves with left-handed and right-handed circular polarization, being classical counterparts of photons. The deformed dispersion relation appears to be nontrivial.

Poisson gauge models and Seiberg-Witten map

The semiclassical limit of full non-commutative gauge theory is known as Poisson gauge theory. In this work we revise the construction of Poisson gauge theory paying attention to the geometric meaning of the structures involved and advance in the direction of a further development of the proposed formalism, including the derivation of Noether identities and conservation of currents. For any linear non-commutativity, $\Theta^{ab}(x)=f^{ab}_c\,x^c$, with $f^{ab}_c$ being structure constants of a Lie algebra, an explicit form of the gauge Lagrangian is proposed. In particular a universal solution for the matrix $\rho$ defining the field strength and the covariant derivative is found. The previously known examples of $\kappa$-Minkowski, $\lambda$-Minkowski and rotationally invariant non-commutativity are recovered from the general formula. The arbitrariness in the construction of Poisson gauge models is addressed in terms of Seiberg-Witten maps, i.e., invertible field redefinitions mapping gauge orbits onto gauge orbits.

$k$-Minkowski-deformation of $U(1)$ gauge theory

We construct a non-commutative kappa-Minkowski deformation of U(1) gauge theory, following a general approach, recently proposed in JHEP 2008 (2020) 041. We obtain an exact (all orders in the non-commutativity parameter) expression for both the deformed gauge transformations and the deformed field strength, which is covariant under these transformations. The corresponding Yang-Mills Lagrangian is gauge covariant and reproduces the Maxwell Lagrangian in the commutative limit. Gauge invariance of the action functional requires a non-trivial integration measure which, in the commutative limit, does not reduce to the trivial one. We discuss the physical meaning of such a nontrivial commutative limit, relating it to a nontrivial space-time curvature of the undeformed theory. Moreover, we propose a rescaled kappa-Minkowski non-commutative structure, which exhibits a standard flat commutative limit.

The Kirillov picture for the Wigner particle

We discuss the Kirillov method for massless Wigner particles, usually (mis)named "continuous spin" or "infinite spin" particles. These appear in Wigner's classification of the unitary representations of the Poincar\'e group, labelled by elements of the enveloping algebra of the Poincar\'e Lie algebra. Now, the coadjoint orbit procedure introduced by Kirillov is a prelude to quantization. Here we exhibit for those particles the classical Casimir functions on phase space, in parallel to quantum representation theory. A good set of position coordinates are identified on the coadjoint orbits of the Wigner particles; the stabilizer subgroups and the symplectic structures of these orbits are also described.

Noncommutative $R^d$ via closed star product

We consider linear star products on $R^d$ of Lie algebra type. First we derive the closed formula for the polydifferential representation of the corresponding Lie algebra generators. Using this representation we define the Weyl star product on the dual of the Lie algebra. Then we construct a gauge operator relating the Weyl star product with the one which is closed with respect to some trace functional, $Tr( f\star g)= Tr( f\cdot g)$. We introduce the derivative operator on the algebra of the closed star product and show that the corresponding Leibnitz rule holds true up to a total derivative. As a particular example we study the space $R^3_θ$ with $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ type noncommutativity and show that in this case the closed star product is the one obtained from the Duflo quantization map. As a result a Laplacian can be defined such that its commutative limit reproduces the ordinary commutative one. The deformed Leibnitz rule is applied to scalar field theory to derive conservation laws and the corresponding noncommutative currents.

Spin connection and boundary states in a topological insulator

We study the surface resistivity of a three-dimensional topological insulator when the boundaries exhibit a non trivial curvature. We obtain an analytical solution for a spherical topological insulator, and we show that a non trivial quantum spin connection emerges from the three dimensional band structure. We analyze the effect of the spin connection on the scattering by a bump on a flat surface. Quantum effects induced by the geometry lead to resonances when the electron wavelength is comparable to the size of the bump.

Noncommutative differential calculus for Moyal subalgebras

We build a differential calculus for subalgebras of the Moyal algebra on R^4 starting from a redundant differential calculus on the Moyal algebra, which is suitable for reduction. In some cases we find a frame of 1-forms which allows to realize the complex of forms as a tensor product of the noncommutative subalgebras with the external algebra Lambda^*.

Duality symmetry for star products

A duality property for star products is exhibited. In view of it, known star-product schemes, like the Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formalism, the Husimi and the Glauber-Sudarshan maps are revisited and their dual partners elucidated. The tomographic map, which has been recently described as yet another star product scheme, is considered. It yields a noncommutative algebra of operator symbols which are positive definite probability distributions. Through the duality symmetry a new noncommutative algebra of operator symbols is found, equipped with a new star product. The kernel of the new star product is established in explicit form and examples are considered.

Spin-1 gravitational waves

Gravitational fields invariant for a 2-dimensional Lie algebra of Killing fields [ X,Y] =Y, with Y of light type, are analyzed. The conditions for them to represent gravitational waves are verified and the definition of energy and polarization is addressed; realistic generating sources are described.

From the fuzzy disc to edge currents in Chern-Simons Theory

We present a brief review of the fuzzy disc, the finite algebra approximating functions on a disc, which we have introduced earlier. We also present a comparison with recent papers of Balachandran, Gupta and Kürkçüoǧlu, and of Pinzul and Stern, aimed at the discussion of edge states of a Chern-Simons theory.

The Fuzzy Disc

We introduce a finite dimensional matrix model approximation to the algebra of functions on a disc based on noncommutative geometry. The algebra is a subalgebra of the one characterizing the noncommutative plane with a * product and depends on two parameters N and theta. It is composed of functions which decay exponentially outside a disc. In the limit in which the size of the matrices goes to infinity and the noncommutativity parameter goes to zero the disc becomes sharper. We introduce a Laplacian defined on the whole algebra and calculate its eigenvalues. We also calculate the two--points correlation function for a free massless theory (Green's function). In both cases the agreement with the exact result on the disc is very good already for relatively small matrices. This opens up the possibility for the study of field theories on the disc with nonperturbative methods. The model contains edge states, a fact studied in a similar matrix model independently introduced by Balachandran, Gupta and Kurkcuoglu.

Critical exponents of the Gross-Neveu model from the effective average action

The phase transition of the Gross-Neveu model with N fermions is investigated by means of a non-perturbative evolution equation for the scale dependence of the effective average action. The critical exponents and scaling amplitudes are calculated for various values of N in d=3. It is also explicitely verified that the Neveu-Yukawa model belongs to the same universality class as the Gross-Neveu model.

Nonlinear gravitational waves and their polarization

Vacuum gravitational fields invariant for a non Abelian Lie algebra generated by two Killing fields whose commutator is light-like are analyzed. It is shown that they represent nonlinear gravitational waves obeying to two nonlinear superposition laws. The energy and the polarization of this family of waves are explicitely evaluated.

Infinitely many star products to play with

While there has been growing interest for noncommutative spaces in recent times, most examples have been based on the simplest noncommutative algebra: [x_i,x_j]=i theta_{ij}. Here we present new classes of (non-formal) deformed products associated to linear Lie algebras of the kind [x_i,x_j]=ic_{ij}^k x_k. For all possible three-dimensional cases, we define a new star product and discuss its properties. To complete the analysis of these novel noncommutative spaces, we introduce noncompact spectral triples, and the concept of star triple, a specialization of the spectral triple to deformations of the algebra of functions on a noncompact manifold. We examine the generalization to the noncompact case of Connes' conditions for noncommutative spin geometries, and, in the framework of the new star products, we exhibit some candidates for a Dirac operator. On the technical level, properties of the Moyal multiplier algebra M(R_θ^{2n) are elucidated.

Probability representation in quantum field theory

The recently proposed probability representation of quantum mechanics is generalized to quantum field theory. We introduce a probability distribution functional for field configurations and find an evolution equation for such a distribution. The connection to the time-dependent generating functional of Green's functions is elucidated and the classical limit is discussed.

Comments on the Non-Commutative Description of Classical Gravity

We find a one-parameter family of Lagrangian descriptions for classical general relativity in terms of tetrads which are not c-numbers. Rather, they obey exotic commutation relations. These noncommutative properties drop out in the metric sector of the theory, where the Christoffel symbols and the Riemann tensor are ordinary commuting objects and they are given by the usual expression in terms of the metric tensor. Although the metric tensor is not a c-number, we argue that all measurements one can make in this theory are associated with c-numbers, and thus that the common invariant sector of our one--parameter family of deformed gauge theories (for the case of zero torsion) is physically equivalent to Einstein's general relativity.
