Muon capture, continuum random phase approximation and in-medium renormalization of the axial-vector coupling constant

We use the continuum random phase approximation to describe the muon capture on C-12, O-16 and Ca-40. We reproduce the experimental total capture rates on these nuclei to better than 10% using the free nucleon weak form factors and two different residual interactions. However, the calculated rates for the same residual interactions are significantly lower than the data if the in-medium quenching of the axial-vector coupling constant is employed.

Capture of Solar and Higher-Energy Neutrinos by Iodine 127

We discuss and improve a recent treatment of the absorption of solar neutrinos by ${}^{127}$I, in connection with a proposed solar neutrino detector. With standard-solar-model fluxes and an in-medium value of -1.0 for the axial-vector coupling constant $g_A$, we obtain a ${}^8$B-neutrino cross section of 3.3$\times 10^{-42}$, about 50\% larger than in our previous work, and a ${}^7$Be cross section that is less certain but nevertheless also larger than before. We then apply the improved techniques to higher incoming energies that obtain at the LAMPF beam dump, where an experiment is underway to finalize a calibration of the ${}^{127}$I with electron neutrinos from muon decay. We find that forbidden operators, which play no role in solar-neutrino absorption, contribute nonnegligibly to the LAMPF cross section, and that the preliminary LAMPF mean value is significantly larger than our prediction.

Quasielastic neutrino scattering from oxygen and the atmospheric neutrino problem

We examine several phenomena beyond the scope of Fermi-gas models that affect the quasielastic scattering (from oxygen) of neutrinos in the 0.1 -- 3.0 GeV range. These include Coulomb interactions of outgoing protons and leptons, a realistic finite-volume mean field, and the residual nucleon-nucleon interaction. None of these effects are accurately represented in the Monte Carlo simulations used to predict event rates due to $μ$ and $e$ neutrinos from cosmic-ray collisions in the atmosphere. We nevertheless conclude that the neglected physics cannot account for the anomalous $μ$ to $e$ ratio observed at Kamiokande and IMB, and is unlikely to change absolute event rates by more than 10--15\%. We briefly mention other phenomena, still to be investigated in detail, that may produce larger changes.

Atomic parity nonconservation and neutron radii in cesium isotopes

The interpretation of future precise experiments on atomic parity violation in terms of parameters of the Standard Model could be hampered by uncertainties in the atomic and nuclear structure. While the former can be overcome by measurement in a series of isotopes, the nuclear structure requires knowledge of the neutron density. We use the nuclear Hartree-Fock method, which includes deformation effects, to calculate the proton and neutron densities in {125}Cs-{139}Cs. We argue that the good agreement with the experimental charge radii, binding energies, and ground state spins signifies that the phenomenological nuclear force and the method of calculation that we use is adequate. Based on this agreement, and on calculations involving different effective interactions, we estimate the uncertainties in the differences of the neutron radii delta _{N,N'} and conclude that they cause uncertainties in the ratio of weak charges, the quantities determined in the atomic parity nonconservation experiments, of less than 10^{-3}. Such an uncertainty is smaller than the anticipated experimental error.
