Field-driven phase transitions in a quasi-two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet

We report magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements as a function of applied magnetic field and temperature to characterize the $S=1/2$ quasi-two-dimensional frustrated magnet piperazinium hexachlorodicuprate (PHCC). The experiments reveal four distinct phases. At low temperatures and fields the material forms a quantum paramagnet with a 1 meV singlet triplet gap and a magnon bandwidth of 1.7 meV. The singlet state involves multiple spin pairs some of which have negative ground state bond energies. Increasing the field at low temperatures induces three dimensional long range antiferromagnetic order at 7.5 Tesla through a continuous phase transition that can be described as magnon Bose-Einstein condensation. The phase transition to a fully polarized ferromagnetic state occurs at 37 Tesla. The ordered antiferromagnetic phase is surrounded by a renormalized classical regime. The crossover to this phase from the quantum paramagnet is marked by a distinct anomaly in the magnetic susceptibility which coincides with closure of the finite temperature singlet-triplet pseudo gap. The phase boundary between the quantum paramagnet and the Bose-Einstein condensate features a finite temperature minimum at $T=0.2$ K, which may be associated with coupling to nuclear spin or lattice degrees of freedom close to quantum criticality.

Observation of Phasons in Magnetic Shape Memory Alloy Ni2MnGa

An inelastic neutron scattering study of the lattice dynamics of the martensite phase of the ferromagnetic shape memory alloy, Ni2MnGa, reveals the presence of well-defined phasons associated with the charge density wave (CDW) resulting from Fermi surface (FS) nesting. The velocity and the temperature dependence of the phason are measured as well as the anomalous [110]-TA2 phonon.

Three-dimensionality of field-induced magnetism in a high-temperature superconductor

Many physical properties of high-temperature (high-Tc) superconductors are two-dimensional phenomena derived from their square planar CuO2 building blocks. This is especially true of the magnetism from the copper ions. As mobile charge carriers enter the CuO2 layers, the antiferromagnetism of the parent insulators, where each copper spin is antiparallel to its nearest neighbours1, evolves into a fluctuating state where the spins show tendencies towards magnetic order of a longer periodicity. For certain charge carrier densities, quantum fluctuations are sufficiently suppressed to yield static long-period order2,3,4,5,6, and external magnetic fields also induce such order7,8,9,10,11,12. Here we show that in contrast to the chemically-controlled order in superconducting samples, the field-induced order in these same samples is actually three-dimensional, implying significant magnetic linkage between the CuO2 planes. The results are important because they show that there are three-dimensional magnetic couplings which survive into the superconducting state, and coexist with the crucial inter-layer couplings responsible for three-dimensional superconductivity. Both types of coupling will straighten the vortex lines, implying that we have finally established a direct link between technical superconductivity, which requires zero electrical resistance in an applied magnetic field and depends on vortex dynamics, and the underlying antiferromagnetism of the cuprates.

Quantum Criticality in an Organic Magnet

Exchange interactions between $S=\frac{1}{2}$ sites in piperazinium hexachlorodicuprate produce a frustrated bilayer magnet with a singlet ground state. We have determined the field-temperature phase diagram by high field magnetization and neutron scattering experiments. There are two quantum critical points: $H_{c1}=7.5$ T separates a quantum paramagnet phase from a three dimensional, antiferromagnetically-ordered state while $H_{c2}=37$ T marks the onset of a fully polarized state. The ordered phase, which we describe as a magnon Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), is embedded in a quantum critical regime with short range correlations. A low temperature anomaly in the BEC phase boundary indicates that additional low energy features of the material become important near $H_{c1}$.

Field-induced transition between magnetically disordered and ordered phases in underdoped La(2-x)SrxCuO4

We report the observation of a magnetic-field-induced transition between magnetically disordered and ordered phases in slightly under-doped La(2-x)SrxCuO4 with x=0.144. Static incommensurate spin-density-wave order is induced above a critical field of about 3 T, as measured by elastic neutron scattering. Our results allow us to constrain the location of a quantum critical point on the phase diagram.

Spin excitations under fields in an anisotropic bond-alternating quantum S=1 chain: contrast with Haldane spin chains

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the S=1 quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating antiferromagnet Ni(C9D24N4)(NO2)ClO4 have been performed under magnetic fields below and above a critical field Hc at which the energy gap closes. Normal field dependece of Zeeman splitting of the excited triplet modes below Hc has been observed, but the highest mode is unusually small and smears out with increasing field. This can be explained by an interaction with a low-lying two magnon continuum at q=pi that is present in dimerized chains but absent in uniform ones. Above Hc, we find only one excited mode, in stark contrast with three massive excitations previously observed in the structurally similar Haldane-gap material NDMAP [A. Zheludev et al., Phys. Rev. B 68, 134438 (2003)].

Enhancement of magnetic order in the incommensurate phase of Mg-doped CuGeO$_{3}$

We present elastic neutron scattering results at high magnetic fields for Mg-doped CuGeO$_{3}$. For low magnesium concentrations, where a spin-Peierls phase is present, we find an enhancement of the long range antiferromagnetic order in the structural incommensurate phase induced by a high magnetic field. In the incommensurate phase, the Néel temperature increases with field leading to a gain in the magnetic Bragg peak intensity at low temperatures. We also find that the magnetic Bragg peaks remain commensurate even though the structure is incommensurate at high magnetic fields due to the formation of solitons. We interpret these results in terms of the solitons formed at high-magnetic fields effectively acting as doped impurities. Our results point to a strongly disordered ground state with the the antiferromagnetic order localized around impurity sites.

Dynamics of an anisotropic Haldane antiferromagnet in strong magnetic field

We report the results of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the Haldane gap quantum antiferromagnet Ni(C5D14N2)2N3(PF6) performed at mK temperatures in a wide range of magnetic field applied parallel to the S = 1 spin chains. Even though this geometry is closest to an ideal axially symmetric configuration, the Haldane gap closes at the critical field Hc~4T, but reopens again at higher fields. The field dependence of the two lowest magnon modes is experimentally studied and the results are compared with the predictions of several theoretical models. We conclude that of several existing theories, only the recently proposed model [Zheludev et al., cond-mat/0301424 ] is able to reproduce all the features observed experimentally for different field orientations.

Effect of a magnetic field on long-range magnetic order in stage-4 and stage-6 superconducting La2CuO(4+y)

We have measured the enhancement of the static incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) order by an applied magnetic field in stage-4 and stage-6 samples of superconducting La2CuO(4+y). We show that the stage-6 La2CuO(4+y) (Tc=32 K) forms static long-range SDW order with the same wave-vector as that in the previously studied stage-4 material. We have measured the field dependence of the SDW magnetic Bragg peaks in both stage-4 and stage-6 materials at fields up to 14.5 T. A recent model of competing SDW order and superconductivity describes these data well.

Antiferromagnetic vortex state in a high-temperature superconductor

There is strong evidence that magnetic interactions play a crucial role in the mechanism driving high-temperature superconductivity in cuprate superconductors. To investigate this further we have done neutron scattering experiments on the simplest high-temperature superconductor La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) (LSCO) in an applied magnetic field. Below the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), the field penetrates the material via an array of normal state inclusions or vortices while phase coherent superconductivity characterized by zero resistance is suppressed to the lower field-dependent irreversibility temperature. The measurements described here were performed on underdoped LSCO (x=0.10), which develops static incommensurate order below Tc in zero field. Our results show that application of a magnetic field enhances this response without changing the onset temperature. For H=5T the field-induced signal saturates to three times the zero-field signal and phase coherent superconductivity is established within the antiferromagnetic phase.

Excitations of the field-induced soliton lattice in CuGeO3

Here we report the first inelastic neutron scattering study of the magnetic excitations in the incommensurate phase of a spin-Peierls material. The results on CuGeO3 provide direct evidence of a finite excitation gap, two sharp magnetic excitation branches and a very low-lying excitation which is identified as a phason mode, the Goldstone mode of the incommensurate soliton lattice.

Neutron scattering study of the field-induced soliton lattice in CuGeO$_3$

CuGeO$_3$ undergoes a transition from a spin-Peierls phase to an incommensurate phase at a critical field of $H_c\approx 12.5$ T. In the high-field phase a lattice of solitons forms, with both structural and magnetic components, and these have been studied using neutron scattering techniques. Our results provide direct evidence for a long-ranged magnetic soliton structure which has both staggered and uniform magnetizations, and with amplitudes that are broadly in accord with theoretical estimates. The magnetic soliton width, $Γ$, and the field dependence of the incommensurability, $δk_{sp}$, are found to agree well with theoretical predictions.

The effect of magnetic dipolar interactions on the interchain spin wave dispersion in CsNiF_3

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements were performed on the ferromagnetic chain system CsNiF_3 in the collinear antiferromagnetic ordered state below T_N = 2.67K. The measured spin wave dispersion was found to be in good agreement with linear spin wave theory including dipolar interactions. The additional dipole tensor in the Hamiltonian was essential to explain some striking phenomena in the measured spin wave spectrum: a peculiar feature of the dispersion relation is a jump at the zone center, caused by strong dipolar interactions in this system. The interchain exchange coupling constant and the planar anisotropy energy were determined within the present model to be J'/k_B = -0.0247(12)K and A/k_B = 3.3(1)K. This gives a ratio J/J' \approx 500, using the previously determined intrachain coupling constant J/k_B = 11.8$. The small exchange energy J' is of the same order as the dipolar energy, which implies a strong competition between the both interactions.
