Dephasing in a quantum pump

We study how dephasing affects the distribution of the dc current pumped through a chaotic quantum dot. We introduce dephasing by the addition of a voltage probe to the quantum dot, treating both the case of controlled dephasing (when the voltage probe is coupled to the dot via a ballistic point contact with a conductance that is increased stepwise) and intrinsic dephasing (for which the voltage probe serves as a phenomelogical model). While dephasing eventually suppresses the dc current through the dot, we also find that, for a quantum dot with single-mode point contacts, a small amount of dephasing actually decreases the likelihood of a zero pumped current.

Spin, spin-orbit, and electron-electron interactions in mesoscopic systems

We review recent theoretical developments about the role of spins, electron-electron interactions, and spin-orbit coupling in metal nanoparticles and semiconductor quantum dots. For a closed system, in the absence of spin-orbit coupling or of an external magnetic field, electron-electron interactions make it possible to have ground states with spin $S > 1/2$. We review here a theoretical analysis which makes predictions for the probability of finding various values of spin $S$ for an irregular particle in the limit where the number of electron is large but finite. We also present results for the probability distribution of the spacing between successive groundstate energies in such a particle. In a metallic particle with strong spin-orbit interactions, for odd electron number, the groundstate has a Kramers' degeneracy, which is split linearly by a weak applied magnetic field. The splitting may be characterized by an effective $g$-tensor whose principal axes and eigenvalues vary from one level to another. Recent calculations have addressed the joint probability distribution, including the anisotropy, of the eigenvalues. The peculiar form of the spin-orbit coupling for a two-dimensional electron system in a GaAs heterostructure or quantum well leads to a strong suppression of spin-orbit effects when the electrons are confined in a small quantum dot. Spin-effects can be enhanced, however, in the presence of an applied magnetic field parallel to the layer, which may explain recent observations on fluctuations in the conductances through such dots. We also discuss possible explanations for the experimental observations by Davidovic and Tinkham of a multiplet splitting of the lowest resonance in the tunneling conductance through a gold nano-particle.

Density of proper delay times in chaotic and integrable quantum billiards

We calculate the density P(τ) of the eigenvalues of the Wigner-Smith time delay matrix for two-dimensional rectangular and circular billiards with one opening. For long times, the density of these so-called "proper delay times" decays algebraically, in contradistinction to chaotic quantum billiards for which P(τ) exhibits a long-time cut-off.

Interaction Induced Restoration of Phase Coherence

We study the conductance of a quantum T-junction coupled to two electron reservoirs and a quantum dot. In the absence of electron-electron interactions, the conductance $g$ is sensitive to interference between trajectories which enter the dot and those which bypass it. We show that including an intra-dot charging interaction has a marked influence-- it can enforce a coherent response from the dot at temperatures much larger than the single particle level spacing $Δ$. The result is large oscillations of $g$ as a function of the voltage applied to a gate capacitively coupled to the dot. Without interactions, the conductance has only a weak interference signature when $T>Δ$.

Microscopic versus mesoscopic local density of states in one-dimensional localization

We calculate the probability distribution of the local density of states $ν$ in a disordered one-dimensional conductor or single-mode waveguide, attached at one end to an electron or photon reservoir. We show that this distribution does not display a log-normal tail for small $ν$, but diverges instead $\proptoν^{-1/2}$. The log-normal tail appears if $ν$ is averaged over rapid oscillations on the scale of the wavelength. There is no such qualitative distinction between microscopic and mesoscopic densities of states if the levels are broadened by inelastic scattering or absorption, rather than by coupling to a reservoir.

Fano resonances as a probe of phase coherence in quantum dots

In the presence of direct trajectories connecting source and drain contacts, the conductance of a quantum dot may exhibit resonances of the Fano type. Since Fano resonances result from the interference of two transmission pathways, their lineshape (as described by the Fano parameter q) is sensitive to dephasing in the quantum dot. We show that under certain circumstances the dephasing time can be extracted from a measurement of q for a single resonance. We also show that q fluctuates from level to level, and calculate its probability distribution for a chaotic quantum dot. Our results are relevant to recent experiments by Goeres et al.

Pumped current and voltage for an adiabatic quantum pump

We consider adiabatic pumping of electrons through a quantum dot. There are two ways to operate the pump: to create a dc current ${\bar I}$ or to create a dc voltage ${\bar V}$. We demonstrate that, for very slow pumping, ${\bar I}$ and ${\bar V}$ are not simply related via the dc conductance $G$ as $\bar I = \bar V G$. For the case of a chaotic quantum dot, we consider the statistical distribution of ${\bar V} G - {\bar I}$. Results are presented for the limiting cases of a dot with single channel and with multichannel point contacts.

Fokker-Planck equations and density of states in disordered quantum wires

We propose a general scheme to construct scaling equations for the density of states in disordered quantum wires for all ten pure Cartan symmetry classes. The anomalous behavior of the density of states near the Fermi level for the three chiral and four Bogoliubov-de Gennes universality classes is analysed in detail by means of a mapping to a scaling equation for the reflection from a quantum wire in the presence of an imaginary potential.

Rectification of displacement currents in an adiabatic electron pump

Rectification of ac displacement currents generated by periodic variation of two independent gate voltages of a quantum dot can lead to a dc voltage linear in the frequency. The presence of this rectified displacement current could account for the magnetic field symmetry observed in a recent measurement on an adiabatic quantum electron pump by Switkes et al. [Science 283, 1905 (1999)].

Universal gap fluctuations in the superconductor proximity effect

Random-matrix theory is used to study the mesoscopic fluctuations of the excitation gap in a metal grain or quantum dot induced by the proximity to a superconductor. We propose that the probability distribution of the gap is a universal function in rescaled units. Our analytical prediction for the gap distribution agrees well with exact diagonalization of a model Hamiltonian.

Andreev Conductance of Chaotic and Integrable Quantum Dots

We examine the voltage V and magnetic field B dependent Andreev conductance of a chaotic quantum dot coupled via point contacts to a normal metal and a superconductor. In the case where the contact to the superconductor dominates, we find that the conductance is consistent with the dot itself behaving as a superconductor-- it appears as though Andreev reflections are occurring locally at the interface between the normal lead and the dot. This is contrasted against the behaviour of an integrable dot, where for a similar strong coupling to the superconductor, no such effect is seen. The voltage dependence of the Andreev conductance thus provides an extremely pronounced quantum signature of the nature of the dot's classical dynamics. For the chaotic dot, we also study non-monotonic re-entrance effects which occur in both V and B.

Crossover from the chiral to the standard universality classes in the conductance of a quantum wire with random hopping only

The conductance of a quantum wire with off-diagonal disorder that preserves a sublattice symmetry (the random hopping problem with chiral symmetry) is considered. Transport at the band center is anomalous relative to the standard problem of Anderson localization both in the diffusive and localized regimes. In the diffusive regime, there is no weak-localization correction to the conductance and universal conductance fluctuations are twice as large as in the standard cases. Exponential localization occurs only for an even number of transmission channels in which case the localization length does not depend on whether time-reversal and spin rotation symmetry are present or not. For an odd number of channels the conductance decays algebraically. Upon moving away from the band center transport characteristics undergo a crossover to those of the standard universality classes of Anderson localization. This crossover is calculated in the diffusive regime.

Fluctuating spin g-tensor in small metal grains

In the presence of spin-orbit scattering, the splitting of an energy level in a generic small metal grain due to the Zeeman coupling to a magnetic field B depends on the direction of B, as a result of mesoscopic fluctuations. The anisotropy is described by the eigenvalues g_j^2 (j=1,2,3) of a tensor G, corresponding to the (squares of) g-factors along three principal axes. We consider the statistical distribution of G and find that the anisotropy is enhanced by eigenvalue repulsion between the g_j.

Localization and delocalization in dirty superconducting wires

We present Fokker-Planck equations that describe transport of heat and spin in dirty unconventional superconducting quantum wires. Four symmetry classes are distinguished, depending on the presence or absence of time-reversal and spin rotation invariance. In the absence of spin-rotation symmetry, heat transport is anomalous in that the mean conductance decays like $1/\sqrt{L}$ instead of exponentially fast for large enough length $L$ of the wire. The Fokker-Planck equations in the presence of time-reversal symmetry are solved exactly and the mean conductance for quasiparticle transport is calculated for the crossover from the diffusive to the localized regime.

Photonic excess noise and wave localization

This is a theory for the effect of localization on the super-Poissonian noise of radiation propagating through an absorbing disordered waveguide. Localization suppresses both the mean photon current I and the noise power P, but the Fano factor P/I is found to remain unaffected. For strong absorption the Fano factor has the universal value 1+3f/2 (with f the Bose-Einstein function), regardless of whether the waveguide is long or short compared to the localization length.

High-frequency dynamics of wave localisation

We study the effect of localisation on the propagation of a pulse through a multi-mode disordered waveguide. The correlator of the transmitted wave amplitude u at two frequencies differing by delta_omega has for large delta_omega the stretched exponential tail ~exp(-sqrt{tau_D delta_omega/2}). The time constant tau_D=L^2/D is given by the diffusion coefficient D, even if the length L of the waveguide is much greater than the localisation length xi. Localisation has the effect of multiplying the correlator by a frequency-independent factor exp(-L/2xi), which disappears upon breaking time-reversal symmetry.

Distribution of the reflection eigenvalues of a weakly absorbing chaotic cavity

The scattering-matrix product SS+ of a weakly absorbing medium is related by a unitary transformation to the time-delay matrix without absorption. It follows from this relationship that the eigenvalues of SS+ for a weakly absorbing chaotic cavity are distributed according to a generalized Laguerre ensemble.
