Enhanced Hot Electron Preheat Observed in Magnetized Laser Direct-Drive Implosions

Hard x-ray emission, associated with hot electron preheat, in direct-drive implosions was observed to be enhanced by a factor of $1.5\pm0.1$ by application of a $10$ T magnetic field. The applied magnetic field reaches a quasi steady-state aligned with the ablation flow prior to the onset of laser-plasma instabilities in the corona. Hot electrons that would otherwise escape the corona and lead to capsule charging in unmagnetized implosions are confined in a mirror-mode of the magnetic field in magnetized implosions. These hot electrons are shown to subsequently pitch-angle scatter from the mirror onto the capsule, thereby leading to the observed hard x-ray generation in magnetized implosions. Consequently, the energy of charged-fusion products, associated with the capsule charging, are observed to decrease when the implosion is magnetized. These results intensify the need to mitigate laser-plasma instabilities -- particularly for magnetized implosions -- to maximize fusion gain and implosion efficiency.

Fusion alpha particle momentum deposition in thermonuclear burn dynamics

In inertial confinement fusion, the DT fusion alpha particles carry not only energy but also appreciable momentum that is typically neglected in models of thermonuclear burn. In the central hotspot ignition scheme, the hotspot must self-heat and propagate thermonuclear burn before disassembly. Using radiation hydrodynamics simulations with a Monte Carlo alpha particle transport model, we investigate the effect of alpha momentum deposition across sub-ignition to robustly igniting regimes by hydrodynamic scaling of current central hotspot ignition designs from the National Ignition Facility (NIF). We find that the effective alpha particle ram pressure accelerates the shell at burn, reducing hotspot compression, increasing the rate of disassembly and decreasing yield. This causes a notable (~ 30%) reduction in yield at current NIF scale, with a persistent (~ 10%) penalty at larger hydrodynamic scales. These results demonstrate that alpha momentum deposition is a significant effect for present ignition-scale implosions, necessitating its inclusion in ignition criteria, burn models, and designs for high-gain inertial confinement fusion.

Automated simulation-based design via multi-fidelity active learning and optimisation for laser direct drive implosions

The design of inertial fusion experiments is a complex task as driver energy must be delivered in a precise manner to a structured target to achieve a fast, but hydrodynamically stable, implosion. Radiation-hydrodynamics simulation codes are an essential tool in this design process. However, multi-dimensional simulations that capture hydrodynamic instabilities are more computationally expensive than optimistic, 1D, spherically symmetric simulations which are often the primary design tool. In this work, we develop a machine learning framework that aims to effectively use information from a large number of 1D simulations to inform design in the presence of hydrodynamic instabilities. We use an ensemble of neural network surrogate models trained on both 1D and 2D data to capture the space of good designs, i.e. those that are robust to hydrodynamic instabilities. We use this surrogate to perform Bayesian optimisation to find optimal designs for a 25 kJ laser driver. We perform hydrodynamic scaling on these designs to confirm the achievement of high gain for a 2 MJ laser driver, using 2D simulations including alpha heating effects.
