Magnetic properties of single atoms of Fe and Co on Ir(111) and Pt(111)

In using the fully relativistic versions of the Embedded Cluster and Screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker methods for semi-infinite systems the magnetic properties of single adatoms of Fe and Co on Ir(111) and Pt(111) are studied. It is found that for Pt(111) Fe and Co adatoms are strongly perpendicularly oriented, while on Ir(111) the orientation of the magnetization is only out-of-plane for a Co adatom, for an Fe adatom it is in-plane. For comparison also the so-called band energy parts of the anisotropy energy of a single layer of Fe and Co on these two substrates are shown. The obtained results are compared to recent experimental studies using e.g. the spin-polarized STM technique.

First principles calculation of spin-interactions and magnetic ground states of Cr trimers on Au(111)

We present calculations of the magnetic ground states of Cr trimers in different geometries on top of a Au(111) surface. By using a least square fit method based on a fully relativistic embedded-cluster Green's function method first we determined the parameters of a classical vector-spin model consisting of second and fourth order interactions. The newly developed method requires no symmetry constraints, therefore, it is throughout applicable for small nanoparticles of arbitrary geometry. The magnetic ground states were then found by solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations. In all considered cases the configurational energy of the Cr trimers is dominated by large antiferromagnetic nearest neighbor interactions, whilst biquadratic spin-interactions have the second largest contributions to the energy. We find that an equilateral Cr trimer exhibits a frustrated 120$^\circ$ Néel type of ground state with a small out-of-plane component of the magnetization and we show that the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions determine the chirality of the magnetic ground state. In cases of a linear chain and an isosceles trimer collinear antiferromagnetic ground states are obtained with a magnetization lying parallel to the surface.

Magnetic properties of FeCo nanoclusters on Cu(100)

We present ab-initio calculations of the magnetic moments and magnetic anisotropy energies of small FeCo clusters of varying composition on top of a Cu(100) substrate. Three different cluster layouts have been considered, namely 2x2, 3x3 and cross-like pentamer clusters. The ratio of Co atoms with respect to the total number in a chosen cluster (``concentration'') was varied and all possible arrangements of the atomic species were taken into account. Calculations have been performed fully relativistically using the embedded cluster technique in conjunction with the screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method and the magnetocrysergy depend on the position they occupy in a particular cluster and on the type and the number of nearest-neighbors. The MAE for the 2x2 and 3x3 clusters varies with respect to the ``concentration'' of Co atoms in the same manner as the corresponding monolayer case, whereas the pentamer clusters show a slightly different behavior. Furthermore, for the clusters with an easy axis along a direction in the surface plane, the MAE shows a significant angular dependence.

Relativistic treatment of spin-currents and spin-transfer torque

It is shown that a useful relativistic generalization of the conventional spin density for the case of moving electrons is the expectation value of the four-component Bargmann-Wigner polarization operator. An exact equation of motion for this quantity is derived, using the one-particle Dirac equation, and the relativistic analogues of the non-relativistic concepts of spin-currents and spin-transfer torques are identified. In the classical limit the time evolution is governed by the equation of motion first proposed by Bargmann, Michel and Telegdi generalized to the case of inhomogeneous systems. In the non-relativistic limit it is found that the spin-current has an intrinsic Hall contribution and to order 1/c^2 a spin-orbit coupling related torque appears in the equation of motion. The relevance of these results to the theory of the intrinsic spin Hall effect and current-induced switching are briefly discussed.

Spin-polarized surface states close to adatoms on Cu(111)

We present a theoretical study of surface states close to 3d transition metal adatoms (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) on a Cu(111) surface in terms of an embedding technique using the fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method. For each of the adatoms we found resonances in the s-like states to be attributed to a localization of the surface states in the presence of an impurity. We studied the change of the s-like densities of states in the vicinity of the surface state band-edge due to scattering effects mediated via the adatom's d-orbitals. The obtained results show that a magnetic impurity causes spin-polarization of the surface states. In particular, the long-range oscillations of the spin-polarized s-like density of states around an Fe adatom are demonstrated.

Magnetic properties of Quantum Corrals from first principles calculations

We present calculations for electronic and magnetic properties of surface states confined by a circular quantum corral built of magnetic adatoms (Fe) on a Cu(111) surface. We show the oscillations of charge and magnetization densities within the corral and the possibility of the appearance of spin--polarized states. In order to classify the peaks in the calculated density of states with orbital quantum numbers we analyzed the problem in terms of a simple quantum mechanical circular well model. This model is also used to estimate the behaviour of the magnetization and energy with respect to the radius of the circular corral. The calculations are performed fully relativistically using the embedding technique within the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method.

Ab initio study of canted magnetism of finite atomic chains at surfaces

By using ab initio methods on different levels we study the magnetic ground state of (finite) atomic wires deposited on metallic surfaces. A phenomenological model based on symmetry arguments suggests that the magnetization of a ferromagnetic wire is aligned either normal to the wire and, generally, tilted with respect to the surface normal or parallel to the wire. From a first principles point of view, this simple model can be best related to the so--called magnetic force theorem calculations being often used to explore magnetic anisotropy energies of bulk and surface systems. The second theoretical approach we use to search for the canted magnetic ground state is first principles adiabatic spin dynamics extended to the case of fully relativistic electron scattering. First, for the case of two adjacent Fe atoms an a Cu(111) surface we demonstrate that the reduction of the surface symmetry can indeed lead to canted magnetism. The anisotropy constants and consequently the ground state magnetization direction are very sensitive to the position of the dimer with respect to the surface. We also performed calculations for a seven--atom Co chain placed along a step edge of a Pt(111) surface. As far as the ground state spin orientation is concerned we obtain excellent agreement with experiment. Moreover, the magnetic ground state turns out to be slightly noncollinear.

Non-collinear magnetic structures: a possible cause for current induced switching

Current induced switching in Co/Cu/Co trilayers is described in terms of ab-initio determined magnetic twisting energies and corresponding sheet resistances. In viewing the twisting energy as an energy flux the characteristic time thereof is evaluated by means of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation using ab-initio parameters. The obtained switching times are in very good agreement with available experimental data. In terms of the calculated currents, scalar quantities since a classical Ohm's law is applied, critical currents needed to switch magnetic configurations from parallel to antiparallel and vice versa can unambiguously be defined. It is found that the magnetoresistance viewed as a function of the current is essentially determined by the twisting energy as a function of the relative angle between the orientations of the magnetization in the magnetic slabs, which in turn can also explain in particular cases the fact that after having switched off the current the system remains in the switched magnetic configuration. For all ab-initio type calculations the fully relativistic Screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method and the corresponding Kubo-Greenwood equation in the context of density functional theory are applied.

Ab-initio spin dynamics applied to nanoparticles: canted magnetism of a finite Co chain along a Pt(111) surface step edge

In order to search for the magnetic ground state of surface nanostructures we extended first principles adiabatic spin dynamics to the case of fully relativistic electron scattering. Our method relies on a constrained density functional theory whereby the evolution of the orientations of the spin-moments results from a semi-classical Landau-Lifshitz equation. This approach is applied to a study of the ground state of a finite Co chain placed along a step edge of a Pt(111) surface. As far as the ground state spin orientation is concerned we obtain excellent agreement with the experiment. Furthermore we observe noncollinearity of the atom-resolved spin and orbital moments. In terms of magnetic force theorem calculations we also demonstrate how a reduction of symmetry leads to the existence of canted magnetic states.

Ab-initio study of the electric transport in gold nanocontacts

By employing a real-space formulation of the Kubo-Greenwood equation based on a Green's function embedding technique combined with the fully relativistic spin-polarized Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method a detailed investigation of the electrical transport through atomic-scaled contacts between two Au(001) semi-infinite systems is presented. Following a careful numerical test of the method the conductance of Au nanocontacts with different geometries is calculated. In particular, for a contact formed by a linear chain of Au atoms a conductance near 1 $G_{0}$ is obtained. The influence of transition metal impurities (Pd, Fe and Co) placed on various positions near the center of a particular contact is also studied. We found that the conductance is very sensitive to the position of the magnetic impurities and that the mechanism for the occurring relative changes can mainly be attributed to the impurities' minority $d$-band inducing resonant line-shapes in the $s$-like DOS at the center of the contact.

Ab initio study of Curie temperatures of diluted III-V magnetic semiconductors

The electronic structure of diluted (Ga,Mn)As magnetic semiconductors in the presence of As-antisites and magnetic disorder is studied within the framework of the local spin density approximation. Both the chemical and magnetic disorders are treated using the coherent potential approximation. A ground state with partial disorder in the local moments and with a reduced total magnetic moment appears in the presence of As-antisites. We first estimate the Curie temperature T_c from total energy differences between the ferromagnetic and the paramagnetic state by identifying these with the corresponding energy difference in a classical Heisenberg model. A more systematic approach within the framework of the mean-field approximation to estimate T_c consists in an evaluation of the effective exchange fields acting on the magnetic moment at a given site. The presence of As-antisites strongly reduces the Curie temperature. The results indicate that the effect of impurities on the electronic structure cannot be neglected and influences the Curie temperature non-negligibly. A comparison of the calculated Curie temperatures to existing experimental data indicates an increase of the donor concentration with the increase of the Mn-content.

Limitations of the two-media approach in calculating magneto-optical properties of layered systems

It is shown that in polar geometry and normal incidence the 2x2 matrix technique - as discussed in detail in a preceeding paper [Phys. Rev. B 65, 144448 (2002)] - accounts correctly for multiple reflections and optical interferences, and reduces only in the case of a periodic sequence of identical layers to the Fresnel formula of reflectivity, which in turn is the theoretical basis of the two-media approach, widely used in the literature to compute magneto-optical Kerr spectra. As a numerical example ab-initio calculations of the optical constants for an fcc Pt semi-infinite bulk using the spin-polarized relativistic screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method show very good agreement with experimental data.

Layer-resolved optical conductivity of Co|Pt multilayers

The complex optical conductivity tensor is calculated for the Co|Pt systems by applying a contour integration technique within the framework of the spin-polarized relativistic screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method. It is shown that the optical conductivity of the Co|Pt multilayer systems is dominated by contributions arising from the Pt cap and/or substrate layers.

Ab-initio calculation of Kerr spectra for semi-infinite systems including multiple reflections and optical interferences

Based on Luttinger's formulation the complex optical conductivity tensor is calculated within the framework of the spin-polarized relativistic screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method for layered systems by means of a contour integration technique. For polar geometry and normal incidence ab-initio Kerr spectra of multilayer systems are then obtained by including via a 2x2 matrix technique all multiple reflections between layers and optical interferences in the layers. Applications to Co|Pt5 and Pt3|Co|Pt5 on the top of a semi-infinite fcc-Pt(111) bulk substrate show good qualitative agreement with the experimental spectra, but differ from those obtained by applying the commonly used two-media approach.

Fully relativistic calculation of magnetic properties of Fe, Co and Ni adclusters on Ag(100)

We present first principles calculations of the magnetic moments and magnetic anisotropy energies of small Fe, Co and Ni clusters on top of a Ag(100) surface as well as the exchange-coupling energy between two single adatoms of Fe or Co on Ag(100). The calculations are performed fully relativistically using the embedding technique within the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method. The magnetic anisotropy and the exchange-coupling energies are calculated by means of the force theorem. In the case of adatoms and dimers of iron and cobalt we obtain enhanced spin moments and, especially, unusually large orbital moments, while for nickel our calculations predict a complete absence of magnetism. For larger clusters, the magnitudes of the local moments of the atoms in the center of the cluster are very close to those calculated for the corresponding monolayers. Similar to the orbital moments, the contributions of the individual atoms to the magnetic anisotropy energy strongly depend on the position, hence, on the local environment of a particular atom within a given cluster. We find strong ferromagnetic coupling between two neighboring Fe or Co atoms and a rapid, oscillatory decay of the exchange-coupling energy with increasing distance between these two adatoms.

Reorientation phase transitions in thin magnetic films: a review of the classical vector spin model within the mean field approach

The ground state and the finite temperature phase diagrams with respect to magnetic configurations are studied systematically for thin magnetic films in terms of a classical Heisenberg model including magnetic dipole-dipole interaction and uniaxial anisotropy. Simple relations are derived for the occurrence of the various phase boundaries between the different regions of the magnetic orientations. In particular, the range of the first and second order reorientation phase transitions are determined for bi- and trilayers.

Layer-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect in semi-infinite inhomogeneous layered systems

The contour integration technique applied to calculate the optical conductivity tensor at finite temperatures in the case of inhomogeneous surface layered systems within the framework of the spin-polarized relativistic screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker band structure method is extended to arbitrary polarizations of the electric field. It is shown that besides the inter-band contribution, the contour integration technique also accounts for the intra-band contribution too. Introducing a layer-resolved complex Kerr angle, the importance of the first, non-magnetic buffer layer below the ferromagnetic surface on the magneto-optical Kerr effect in the $\mathrm{Co} \mid \mathrm{Pt}_m$ multilayer system is shown. Increasing the thickness of the buffer Pt, the layer-resolved complex Kerr angles follow a linear dependence with respect to m only after nine Pt mono-layers.
