Even a precessing clock is right twice per orbit -- The super-periods of eRO-QPE2 and challenges for quasi-periodic eruption orbital models

We present O$-$C (``observed minus calculated'') timing analysis of the quasi-periodic eruption (QPE) source eRO-QPE2 with a multi-mission X-ray campaign, which includes 32 observed eruptions spanning a month (i.e. 325 QPE cycles). In relation to accretion (e.g. disk instability) models, the O-C is consistent with a damped random walk of the QPE recurrence, albeit with highly uncertain parameters. If instead an underlying orbital clock is present, eRO-QPE2 is consistent with a period of $P \sim 2.24$\,h and two hierarchical super-periodic modulations, with periods of $\sim 4.4$\,d ($\sim47$\,P) and $\approx 95$\,d ($\approx 1000$\,P). We found no negative period derivative, with $|\dot{P}| \lesssim 2 \times 10^{-6}$\,s/s at $3\sigma$. This disfavors high-eccentricity WDs and high-mass/eccentricity IMBHs via GW decay. For disk-collision models, where the $\dot{P}$ from gas drag and the QPE integrated energy provide bounds on the local disk density, a main-sequence star is disfavored as EMRI secondary unless stellar debris streams are present, while stripped stars remain allowed. The correlated odd/even O-C disfavors both disk crossings per orbit being observed. Interpreting the data with one \emph{observed} event per orbit, the short modulation is consistent with apsidal precession for $a \sim 140\,R_g$, $e \approx 0.1$, and $M_{\rm BH} \approx 1.5 \times 10^{5}\,M_\odot$. The longer modulation (much less constrained) is inconsistent with EMRI nodal precession and disk precession is allowed for a limited parameter volume, while there is a solution with a stable hierarchical triple system with an outer massive black hole at $\sim 0.4\,\mathrm{mpc}$ and mass $\sim(0.1-1) \times M_{\rm BH}$. However, no reliable solution can be found with more robust EMRI trajectory models, possibly due to narrow likelihood peaks in a multi-dimensional parameter space with sparse data.

Accessing quantum nanoplasmonics in a hybrid quantum-dot metal nanosystem: Mollow triplet of a quantum dot near a metal nanoparticle

We present a theoretical study of the resonance fluorescence spectra of an optically driven quantum dot placed near a single metal nanoparticle. The metallic reservoir coupling is calculated for an 8-nm metal nanoparticle using a time-convolutionless master equation approach where the exact photon reservoir function is included using Green function theory. By exciting the system coherently near the nanoparticle dipole mode, we show that the driven Mollow spectrum becomes highly asymmetric due to internal coupling effects with higher-order plasmons. We also highlight regimes of resonance squeezing and broadening as well as spectral reshaping through light propagation. Our master equation technique can be applied to any arbitrary material system, including lossy inhomogeneous structures, where mode expansion techniques are known to break down.

Using Belief Functions for Uncertainty Management and Knowledge Acquisition: An Expert Application

This paper describes recent work on an ongoing project in medical diagnosis at the University of Guelph. A domain on which experts are not very good at pinpointing a single disease outcome is explored. On-line medical data is available over a relatively short period of time. Belief Functions (Dempster-Shafer theory) are first extracted from data and then modified with expert opinions. Several methods for doing this are compared and results show that one formulation statistically outperforms the others, including a method suggested by Shafer. Expert opinions and statistically derived information about dependencies among symptoms are also compared. The benefits of using uncertainty management techniques as methods for knowledge acquisition from data are discussed.

Experiments Using Belief Functions and Weights of Evidence incorporating Statistical Data and Expert Opinions

This paper presents some ideas and results of using uncertainty management methods in the presence of data in preference to other statistical and machine learning methods. A medical domain is used as a test-bed with data available from a large hospital database system which collects symptom and outcome information about patients. Data is often missing, of many variable types and sample sizes for particular outcomes is not large. Uncertainty management methods are useful for such domains and have the added advantage of allowing for expert modification of belief values originally obtained from data. Methodological considerations for using belief functions on statistical data are dealt with in some detail. Expert opinions are Incorporated at various levels of the project development and results are reported on an application to liver disease diagnosis. Recent results contrasting the use of weights of evidence and logistic regression on another medical domain are also presented.

Optical Forces Between Coupled Plasmonic Nano-particles near Metal Surfaces and Negative Index Material Waveguides

We present a study of light-induced forces between two coupled plasmonic nano-particles above various slab geometries including a metallic half-space and a 280-nm thick negative index material (NIM) slab waveguide. We investigate optical forces by non-perturbatively calculating the scattered electric field via a Green function technique which includes the particle interactions to all orders. For excitation frequencies near the surface plasmon polariton and slow-light waveguide modes of the metal and NIM, respectively, we find rich light-induced forces and significant dynamical back-action effects. Optical quenching is found to be important in both metal and NIM planar geometries, which reduces the spatial range of the achievable inter-particle forces. However, reducing the loss in the NIM allows radiation to propagate through the slow-light modes more efficiently, thus causing the light-induced forces to be more pronounced between the two particles. To highlight the underlying mechanisms by which the particles couple, we connect our Green function calculations to various familiar quantities in quantum optics.

Influence of electron-acoustic phonon scattering on off-resonant cavity feeding within a strongly coupled quantum-dot cavity system

We present a medium-dependent quantum optics approach to describe the influence of electron-acoustic phonon coupling on the emission spectra of a strongly coupled quantum-dot cavity system. Using a canonical Hamiltonian for light quantization and a photon Green function formalism, phonons are included to all orders through the dot polarizability function obtained within the independent Boson model. We derive simple user-friendly analytical expressions for the linear quantum light spectrum, including the influence from both exciton and cavity-emission decay channels. In the regime of semiconductor cavity-QED, we study cavity emission for various exciton-cavity detunings and demonstrate rich spectral asymmetries as well as cavity-mode suppression and enhancement effects. Our technique is nonperturbative, and non-Markovian, and can be applied to study photon emission from a wide range of semiconductor quantum dot structures, including waveguides and coupled cavity arrays. We compare our theory directly to recent and apparently puzzling experimental data for a single site-controlled quantum dot in a photonic crystal cavity and show good agreement as a function of cavity-dot detuning and as a function of temperature.

Nonlinear photoluminescence spectra from a quantum dot-cavity system: Direct evidence of pump-induced stimulated emission and anharmonic cavity-QED

We investigate the power-dependent photoluminescence spectra from a strongly coupled quantum dot-cavity system using a quantum master equation technique that accounts for incoherent pumping, pure dephasing, and fermion or boson statistics. Analytical spectra at the one-photon correlation level and the numerically exact multi-photon spectra for fermions are presented. We compare to recent experiments on a quantum dot-micropiller cavity system and show that an excellent fit to the data can be obtained by varying only the incoherent pump rates in direct correspondence with the experiments. Our theory and experiments together show a clear and systematic way of studying stimulated-emission induced broadening and anharmonic cavity-QED.

Controlled cavity-QED using a photonic crystal waveguide-cavity system

We introduce a photonic crystal waveguide-cavity system for controlling single photon cavity-QED processes. Exploiting Bloch mode analysis, and medium-dependent Green function techniques, we demonstrate that the propagation of single photons can be accurately described analytically, for integrated periodic waveguides with little more than four unit cells, including an output coupler. We verify our analytical approach by comparing to rigorous numerical calculations for a range of photonic crystal waveguide lengths. This allows one to nano-engineer various regimes of cavity-QED with unprecedented control. We demonstrate Purcell factors of greater than 1000 and on-chip single photon beta factors of about 80% efficiency. Both weak and strong coupling regimes are investigated, and the important role of waveguide length on the output emission spectra is shown, for vertically emitted emission and output waveguide emission.
