Numerical study of Anderson localization of terahertz waves in disordered waveguides

We present a numerical study of electromagnetic wave transport in disordered quasi-one-dimensional waveguides at terahertz frequencies. Finite element method calculations of terahertz wave propagation within LiNbO$_{3}$ waveguides with randomly arranged air-filled circular scatterers exhibit an onset of Anderson localization at experimentally accessible length scales. Results for the average transmission as a function of waveguide length and scatterer density demonstrate a clear crossover from diffusive to localized transport regime. In addition, we find that transmission fluctuations grow dramatically when crossing into the localized regime. Our numerical results are in good quantitative agreement with theory over a wide range of experimentally accessible parameters both in the diffusive and localized regime opening the path towards experimental observation of terahertz wave localization.

Monitoring spatially heterogeneous dynamics in a drying colloidal thin film

We report on a new type of experiment that enables us to monitor spatially and temporally heterogeneous dynamic properties in complex fluids. Our approach is based on the analysis of near-field speckles produced by light diffusely reflected from the superficial volume of a strongly scattering medium. By periodic modulation of an incident speckle beam we obtain pixel-wise ensemble averages of the structure function coefficient, a measure of the dynamic activity. To illustrate the application of our approach we follow the different stages in the drying process of a colloidal thin film. We show that we can access ensemble averaged dynamic properties on length scales as small as ten micrometers over the full field of view.

Quantitative modeling of laser speckle imaging

We have analyzed the image formation and dynamic properties in laser speckle imaging (LSI) both experimentally and with Monte-Carlo simulation. We show for the case of a liquid inclusion that the spatial resolution and the signal itself are both significantly affected by scattering from the turbid environment. Multiple scattering leads to blurring of the dynamic inhomogeneity as detected by LSI. The presence of a non-fluctuating component of scattered light results in the significant increase in the measured image contrast and complicates the estimation of the relaxation time. We present a refined processing scheme that allows a correct estimation of the relaxation time from LSI data.

Photocount statistics in mesoscopic optics

We report the first observation of the impact of mesoscopic fluctuations on the photocount statistics of coherent light scattered in a random medium. Poisson photocount distribution of the incident light widens and gains additional asymmetry upon transmission through a suspension of small dielectric spheres. The effect is only appreciable when the average number of photocounts becomes comparable or larger than the effective dimensionless conductance g of the sample.

Multi-speckle diffusing wave spectroscopy with a single mode detection scheme

We present a detection scheme for diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) based on a two cell geometry that allows efficient ensemble averaging. This is achieved by putting a fast rotating diffuser in the optical path between laser and sample. We show that the recorded (multi-speckle) correlation echoes provide an ensemble averaged signal that does not require additional time averaging. We find the performance of our experimental scheme comparable or even superior to camera based multi-speckle techniques that rely on direct spatial averaging. Furthermore, combined with traditional two-cell DWS, the full intensity autocorrelation function can be measured with a single experimental setup covering more than 10 decades in correlation time.
