A precise method for visualizing dispersive features in image plots

In order to improve the advantages and the reliability of the second derivative method in tracking the position of extrema from experimental curves, we develop a novel analysis method based on the mathematical concept of curvature. We derive the formulas for the curvature in one and two dimensions and demonstrate their applicability to simulated and experimental angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data. As compared to the second derivative, our new method improves the localization of the extrema and reduces the peak broadness for a better visualization on intensity image plots.

Formation of van der Waals molecules in buffer gas cooled magnetic traps

We show that a large class of helium-containing cold polar molecules form readily in a cryogenic buffer gas, achieving densities as high as 10^12 cm^-3. We explore the spin relaxation of these molecules in buffer gas loaded magnetic traps, and identify a loss mechanism based on Landau-Zener transitions arising from the anisotropic hyperfine interaction. Our results show that the recently observed strong T^6 thermal dependence of spin change in buffer gas trapped silver (Ag) is accounted for by the formation and spin change of AgHe, thus providing evidence for molecular formation in a buffer gas trap.

Inference and learning in sparse systems with multiple states

We discuss how inference can be performed when data are sampled from the non-ergodic phase of systems with multiple attractors. We take as model system the finite connectivity Hopfield model in the memory phase and suggest a cavity method approach to reconstruct the couplings when the data are separately sampled from few attractor states. We also show how the inference results can be converted into a learning protocol for neural networks in which patterns are presented through weak external fields. The protocol is simple and fully local, and is able to store patterns with a finite overlap with the input patterns without ever reaching a spin glass phase where all memories are lost.

Electron spin diffusion at the interface of multiferroic oxides

We study the spin diffusion in a two-dimensional electron gas at the interface of oxide heterostructure LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ grown on multiferroic TbMnO$_3$ at 15 K by means of the kinetic spin Bloch equation approach. The spiral magnetic moments of Mn$^{3+}$ in TbMnO$_3$ interact with the diffusing spins at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface via the Heisenberg exchange interaction. It is demonstrated that the spin diffusion length is always finite, despite the polarization direction of the injected spins. Our study also reveals the important role played by the Coulomb scattering, which can effectively suppress the spin diffusion.

Strong nodeless pairing on separate electron Fermi surface sheets in (Tl, K)Fe$_{1.78}$Se$_2$ probed by ARPES

We performed a high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the Tl$_{0.63}$K$_{0.37}$Fe$_{1.78}$Se$_2$ superconductor ($T_c=29$ K). We show the existence of two electronlike bands at the M$(π, 0)$ point which cross the Fermi level at similar Fermi wave vectors to form nearly circular electronlike Fermi surface pockets. We observe a nearly isotropic $\sim$ 8.5 meV superconducting gap ($Δ/k_BT_c\sim 7$) on these Fermi surfaces. Our analysis of the band structure around the Brillouin zone centre reveals two additional electronlike Fermi surfaces: a very small one and a larger one with $k_F$ comparable to the FS pockets at M. Interestingly, a SC gap with a magnitude of $\sim$ 8 meV also develops along the latter FS. Our observations are consistent with the s-wave strong coupling scenario.

Absence of holelike Fermi surface in superconducting K0.8Fe1.7Se2 revealed by ARPES

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the new iron-based superconductor K0.8Fe1.7Se2 (Tc ~ 30 K). Clear band dispersion is observed with the overall bandwidth renormalized by a factor of 2.5 compared to our local density approximation calculations, indicating relatively strong correlation effects. Only an electronlike band crosses the Fermi energy, forming a nearly circular Fermi surface (FS) at M (π, 0). The holelike band at Γ sinks ~ 90 meV below the Fermi energy, with an indirect band gap of 30 meV to the bottom of the electronlike band. The observed FS topology in this superconductor favors (π, π) inter-FS scattering between the electronlike FSs at the M points, in sharp contrast with other iron-based superconductors which favor (π, 0) inter-FS scattering between holelike and electronlike FSs.

A fundamental limit to the efficiency of spin-exchange optical pumping of 3He nuclei

We establish the existence of a fundamental limit to the efficiency of spin-exchange optical pumping of 3He nuclei by collisions with spin-polarized alkali-metal atoms. Using accurate ab initio calculations of molecular interactions and scattering properties, we show that the maximum 3He spin polarization that can be achieved in spin-exchange collisions with potassium (39K) and silver (107Ag) atoms is limited by the anisotropic hyperfine interaction. We find that spin exchange in Ag-He collisions occurs much faster than in K-He collisions, suggesting the possibility of using Ag in spin-exchange optical pumping experiments to increase the production rate of hyperpolarized 3He. Our analysis indicates that measurements of trap loss rates of 2S atoms in the presence of cold 3He gas may be used to probe anisotropic spin-exchange interactions in atom-He collisions.

Voltage controlled spin precession in InAs quantum wells

In this work we investigate spin diffusion in InAs quantum wells with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling modulated by a gate voltage. The gate voltage dependence of the spin diffusion under different temperatures is studied with all the scattering explicitly included. Our result partially supports the claim of the realization of the Datta-Das spin-injected field effect transistor by Koo {\it et al.} [Science {\bf 325}, 1515 (2009)]. We also show that the scattering plays an important role in spin diffusion in such a system.

Higher Order Modes In Third Harmonic Cavities at Flash

Transverse modes in the 3.9 GHz cavities, designed and fabricated by FNAL, are reported on. These modes have the potential to cause significant emittance dilution if they are not sufficiently suppressed. Recent probe-based-experiments have indicated significant discrepancies between modes predicted in stand-alone 9-cell cavities compared to those in 4-cavity modules. We employ the code HFSS to analyze these modes, coupled through beam tubes whose cut-off is above that of the first dipole band.

First Beam Spectra of SC Third Harmonic Cavity at FLASH

Third harmonic superconducting cavities have been designed and fabricated by FNAL to minimise the energy spread along bunches in the FLASH facility at DESY. A module, consisting of four nine-cell 3.9 GHz cavities, has been installed in FLASH. The first measurement with beam excitation is presented, and the comparisons to transmission measurement without beam and simulations are made. Higher order modes (HOMs) are able to propagate to adjacent cavities through attached beam tubes. Modes from 1.3 GHz cavities in the module nearby also propagate into this module.

Spin relaxation in $n$-type (111) GaAs quantum wells

We investigate the spin relaxation limited by the D'yakonov-Perel' mechanism in $n$-type (111) GaAs quantum wells, by means of the kinetic spin Bloch equation approach. In (111) GaAs quantum wells, the in-plane effective magnetic field from the D'yakonov-Perel' term can be suppressed to zero on a special momentum circle under the proper gate voltage, by the cancellation between the Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit coupling terms. When the spin-polarized electrons mainly distribute around this special circle, the in-plane inhomogeneous broadening is small and the spin relaxation can be suppressed, especially for that along the growth direction of quantum well. This cancellation effect may cause a peak (the cancellation peak) in the density or temperature dependence of the spin relaxation time. In the density (temperature) dependence, the interplay between the cancellation peak and the ordinary density (Coulomb) peak leads to rich features of the density (temperature) dependence of the spin relaxation time. The effect of impurities, with its different weights on the cancellation peak and the Coulomb peak in the temperature dependence of the spin relaxation, is revealed. We also show the anisotropy of the spin relaxation with respect to the spin-polarization direction.

IGEC2: A 17-month search for gravitational wave bursts in 2005-2007

We present here the results of a 515 days long run of the IGEC2 observatory, consisting of the four resonant mass detectors ALLEGRO, AURIGA, EXPLORER and NAUTILUS. The reported results are related to the fourfold observation time from Nov. 6 2005 until Apr. 14 2007, when Allegro ceased its operation. This period overlapped with the first long term observations performed by the LIGO interferometric detectors. The IGEC observations aim at the identification of gravitational wave candidates with high confidence, keeping the false alarm rate at the level of 1 per century, and high duty cycle, namely 57% with all four sites and 94% with at least three sites in simultaneous observation. The network data analysis is based on time coincidence searches over at least three detectors: the four 3-fold searches and the 4-fold one are combined in a logical OR. We exchanged data with the usual blind procedure, by applying a unique confidential time offset to the events in each set of data. The accidental background was investigated by performing sets of 10^8 coincidence analyses per each detector configuration on off-source data, obtained by shifting the time series of each detector. The thresholds of the five searches were tuned so as to control the overall false alarm rate to 1/century. When the confidential time shifts was disclosed, no gravitational wave candidate was found in the on-source data. As an additional output of this search, we make available to other observatories the list of triple coincidence found below search thresholds, corresponding to a false alarm rate of 1/month.

Higher Order Modes in Third Harmonic Cavities for XFEL/FLASH

We analyse higher order modes in the 3.9 GHz bunch shaping cavities recently installed in the FLASH facility at DESY. We report on recent experimental results on the frequency spectrum from probe based measurements made at CMTB at DESY. These are compared to those predicted by finite difference and finite element computer codes. This study is focused mainly on the dipole component of the multi-pole expansion of the wakefield.. The modes are readily identifiable as single-cavity modes provided the frequencies of these modes are below the cut-off of the inter-connecting beam pipes. The modes above cut-off are coupled to the 4 cavities and are distinct from single cavity modes

Quantum pump for counter-circulations in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

We propose a pump scheme for quantum circulations, including counter-circulations for superposition states, of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. Our scheme is efficient and can be implemented within current experimental technologies and setups. It remains valid for non-classical atomic states, such as pseudo-spin squeezed states and maximal entangled N-GHZ or NooN states. Moreover, it is capable of transforming several enhanced sensing protocols relying on reduced fluctuations from quantum correlation and entanglement of atomic internal states to enhanced measurement of spatial interference and rotation.

Phonons and the coherence scale of models of heavy fermions

We consider models of heavy fermions in the strong coupling or local moment limit and include phonon degrees of freedom on the conduction electrons. Due to the large mass or low coherence temperature of the heavy fermion state, it is shown that such a regime is dominated by vertex corrections which leads to the complete failure of the Migdal theorem. Even at weak electron-phonon couplings, binding of the conduction electrons competes with the Kondo effect and substantially reduces the coherence temperature, ultimately leading to the Kondo breakdown. Those results are obtained using a combination of the slave boson method and Migdal-Eliashberg approximation as well as the dynamical mean-field theory approximation.

Effect of nonequilibrium phonons on hot-electron spin relaxation in n-type GaAs quantum wells

We have studied the effect of nonequilibrium longitudinal optical phonons on hot-electron spin relaxation in $n$-type GaAs quantum wells. The longitudinal optical phonons, due to the finite relaxation rate, are driven to nonequilibrium states by electrons under an in-plane electric field. The nonequilibrium phonons then in turn influence the electron spin relaxation properties via modifying the electron heating and drifting. The spin relaxation time is elongated due to the enhanced electron heating and thus the electron-phonon scattering in the presence of nonequilibrium phonons. The frequency of spin precession, which is roughly proportional to the electron drift velocity, can be either increased (at low electric field and/or high lattice temperature) or decreased (at high electric field and/or low lattice temperature). The nonequilibrium phonon effect is more pronounced when the electron density is high and the impurity density is low.

Hole spin relaxation in [001] strained asymmetric Si/SiGe and Ge/SiGe quantum wells

Hole spin relaxation in [001] strained asymmetric Si/Si$_{0.7}$Ge$_{0.3}$ (Ge/Si$_{0.3}$Ge$_{0.7}$) quantum wells is investigated in the situation with only the lowest hole subband being relevant. The effective Hamiltonian of the lowest hole subband is obtained by the subband Löwdin perturbation method in the framework of the six-band Luttinger ${\bf k}\cdot{\bf p}$ model, with sufficient basis functions included. The lowest hole subband in Si/SiGe quantum wells is light-hole like with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling term depending on momentum both linearly and cubically, while that in Ge/SiGe quantum wells is a heavy hole state with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling term depending on momentum only cubically. The hole spin relaxation is investigated by means of the fully microscopic kinetic spin Bloch equation approach, with all the relevant scatterings considered. It is found that the hole-phonon scattering is very weak, which makes the hole-hole Coulomb scattering become very important. The hole system in Si/SiGe quantum wells is generally in the strong scattering limit, while that in Ge/SiGe quantum wells can be in either the strong or the weak scattering limit. The Coulomb scattering leads to a peak in both the temperature and hole density dependences of spin relaxation time in Si/SiGe quantum wells, located around the crossover between the degenerate and nondegenerate regimes. Nevertheless, the Coulomb scattering leads to not only a peak but also a valley in the temperature dependence of spin relaxation time in Ge/SiGe quantum wells.... (The remaining is omitted due to the limit of space).

Thermo-acoustic wave propagation and reflection near the liquid-gas critical point

We study the thermo-acoustic wave propagation and reflection near the liquid-gas critical point. Specifically, we perform a numerical investigation of the acoustic responses in a near-critical fluid to thermal perturbations based on the same setup of a recent ultrasensitive interferometry measurement in CO2 [Y. Miura et al. Phys. Rev. E 74, 010101(R) (2006)]. The numerical results agree well with the experimental data. New features regarding the reflection pattern of thermo-acoustic waves near the critical point under pulse perturbations are revealed by the proper inclusion of the critically diverging bulk viscosity.
