Quantum signature of analog Hawking radiation in momentum space

We consider a sonic analog of a black hole realized in the one-dimensional flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that one- and two-body momentum distributions accessible by present-day experimental techniques provide clear direct evidence (i) of the occurrence of a sonic horizon, (ii) of the associated acoustic Hawking radiation and (iii) of the quantum nature of the Hawking process. The signature of the quantum behavior persists even at temperatures larger than the chemical potential.

Mean field effects on the scattered atoms in condensate collisions

We consider the collision of two Bose Einstein condensates at supersonic velocities and focus on the halo of scattered atoms. This halo is the most important feature for experiments and is also an excellent testing ground for various theoretical approaches. In particular we find that the typical reduced Bogoliubov description, commonly used, is often not accurate in the region of parameters where experiments are performed. Surprisingly, besides the halo pair creation terms, one should take into account the evolving mean field of the remaining condensate and on-condensate pair creation. We present examples where the difference is clearly seen, and where the reduced description still holds.

On the infimum of the energy-momentum spectrum of a homogeneous Bose gas

We consider second quantized homogeneous Bose gas in a large cubic box with periodic boundary conditions, at zero temperature. We discuss the energy-momentum spectrum of the Bose gas and its physical significance. We review various rigorous and heuristic results as well as open conjectures about its properties. Our main aim is to convince the readers, including those with mainly mathematical background, that this subject has many interesting problems for rigorous research. In particular, we investigate the upper bound on the infimum of the energy for a fixed total momentum $\kk$ given by the expectation value of one-particle excitations over a squeezed states. This bound can be viewed as a rigorous version of the famous Bogoliubov method. We show that this approach seems to lead to a (non-physical) energy gap. The variational problem involving squeezed states can serve as the preparatory step in a perturbative approach that should be useful in computing excitation spectrum. This version of a perturbative approach to the Bose gas seems (at least in principle) superior to the commonly used approach based on the $c$-number substitution.

Quantum phase transition and critical fluctuations of an attractive Bose gas in a double well potential

We consider a Bose gas with an attractive interaction in a symmetric double well potential. In the Hartree approximation, the ground state solution spontaneously breaks the symmetry of the trapping potential above certain value of the interaction strength. We demonstrate how the Landau-Ginzburg scheme of the second order phase transition emerges from the quantum model and show its link to the spontaneous symmetry breaking mentioned above. We identify the order parameter, the critical point and analyze quantum fluctuations around it.

Second order quantum phase transition of a homogeneous Bose gas with attractive interactions

We consider a homogeneous Bose gas of particles with an attractive interaction. Mean field theory predicts for this system a spontaneous symmetry breaking at a certain value of the interaction strength. We show that at this point a second-order quantum phase transition occurs. We investigate the system in the vicinity of the critical point using Bogoliubov theory and a continuous description, that allows us to analyze {\it quantum fluctuations} in the system even when the Bogoliubov approach breaks down.

Statics and dynamics of BEC's in double square well potentials

In this paper we treat the behavior of Bose Einstein condensates in double square well potentials, both of equal and different depths. For even depth, symmetry preserving solutions to the relevant nonlinear Schrödinger equation is known, just as in the linear limit. When the nonlinearity is strong enough, symmetry breaking solutions also exist, side by side with the symmetric one. Interestingly, solutions almost entirely localized in one of the wells are known as an extreme case. Here we outline a method for obtaining all these solutions for repulsive interactions. The bifurcation point at which, for critical nonlinearity, the asymmetric solutions branch off from the symmetry preserving ones is found analytically. We also find this bifurcation point and treat the solutions generally via a Josephson Junction model. When the confining potential is in the form of two wells of different depth, interesting new phenomena appear. This is true of both the occurrence of the bifurcation point for the static solutions, and also of the dynamics of phase and amplitude varying solutions. Again a generalization of the Josephson model proves useful. The stability of solutions is treated briefly.
