The Combinatorics of Alternating Tangles: from theory to computerized enumeration

We study the enumeration of alternating links and tangles, considered up to topological (flype) equivalences. A weight $n$ is given to each connected component, and in particular the limit $n\to 0$ yields information about (alternating) knots. Using a finite renormalization scheme for an associated matrix model, we first reduce the task to that of enumerating planar tetravalent diagrams with two types of vertices (self-intersections and tangencies), where now the subtle issue of topological equivalences has been eliminated. The number of such diagrams with $p$ vertices scales as $12^p$ for $p\to\infty$. We next show how to efficiently enumerate these diagrams (in time $\sim 2.7^p$) by using a transfer matrix method. We give results for various generating functions up to 22 crossings. We then comment on their large-order asymptotic behavior.

The General O(n) Quartic Matrix Model and its application to Counting Tangles and Links

The counting of alternating tangles in terms of their crossing number, number of external legs and connected components is presented here in a unified framework using quantum field-theoretic methods applied to a matrix model of colored links. The overcounting related to topological equivalence of diagrams is removed by means of a renormalization scheme of the matrix model; the corresponding ``renormalization equations'' are derived. Some particular cases are studied in detail and solved exactly.

Inhomogeneous Six-Vertex Model with Domain Wall Boundary Conditions and Bethe Ansatz

In this note, we consider the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions, defined on a $M\times M$ lattice, in the inhomogeneous case where the partition function depends on 2M inhomogeneities $λ_j$ and $μ_k$. For a particular choice of the set of $λ_j$ we find a new determinant representation for the partition function, which allows evaluation of the bulk free energy in the thermodynamic limit. This provides a new connection between two types of determinant formulae. We also show in a special case that spin correlations on the horizontal line going through the center coincide with the ones for periodic boundary conditions.

Thermodynamic limit of the Six-Vertex Model with Domain Wall Boundary Conditions

We address the question of the dependence of the bulk free energy on boundary conditions for the six vertex model. Here we compare the bulk free energy for periodic and domain wall boundary conditions. Using a determinant representation for the partition function with domain wall boundary conditions, we derive Toda differential equations and solve them asymptotically in order to extract the bulk free energy. We find that it is different and bears no simple relation with the free energy for periodic boundary conditions. The six vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions is closely related to algebraic combinatorics (alternating sign matrices). This implies new results for the weighted counting for large size alternating sign matrices. Finally we comment on the interpretation of our results, in particular in connection with domino tilings (dimers on a square lattice).

On the Counting of Colored Tangles

The connection between matrix integrals and links is used to define matrix models which count alternating tangles in which each closed loop is weighted with a factor n, i.e. may be regarded as decorated with n possible colors. For n=2, the corresponding matrix integral is that recently solved in the study of the random lattice six-vertex model. The generating function of alternating 2-color tangles is provided in terms of elliptic functions, expanded to 16-th order (16 crossings) and its asymptotic behavior is given.

Six-Vertex Model with Domain Wall Boundary Conditions and One-Matrix Model

The partition function of the six-vertex model on a square lattice with domain wall boundary conditions (DWBC) is rewritten as a hermitean one-matrix model or a discretized version of it (similar to sums over Young diagrams), depending on the phase. The expression is exact for finite lattice size, which is equal to the size of the corresponding matrix. In the thermodynamic limit, the matrix integral is computed using traditional matrix model techniques, thus providing a complete treatment of the bulk free energy of the six-vertex model with DWBC in the different phases. In particular, in the anti-ferroelectric phase, the bulk free energy and a subdominant correction are given exactly in terms of elliptic theta functions.

The six-vertex model on random lattices

In this letter, the 6-vertex model on dynamical random lattices is defined via a matrix model and rewritten (following I. Kostov) as a deformation of the O(2) model. In the large N planar limit, an exact solution is found at criticality. The critical exponents of the model are determined; they vary continously along the critical line. The vicinity of the latter is explored, which confirms that we have a line of c=1 conformal field theories coupled to gravity.

Some Matrix Integrals related to Knots and Links

The study of a certain class of matrix integrals can be motivated by their interpretation as counting objects of knot theory such as alternating prime links, tangles or knots. The simplest such model is studied in detail and allows to rederive recent results of Sundberg and Thistlethwaite. The second non-trivial example turns out to be essentially the so-called ABAB model, though in this case the analysis has not yet been carried out completely. Further generalizations are discussed. This is a review of work done (in part) in collaboration with J.-B. Zuber.

The dilute Potts model on random surfaces

We present a new solution of the asymmetric two-matrix model in the large $N$ limit which only involves a saddle point analysis. The model can be interpreted as Ising in the presence of a magnetic field, on random dynamical lattices with the topology of the sphere (resp. the disk) for closed (resp. open) surfaces; we elaborate on the resulting phase diagram. The method can be equally well applied to a more general $(Q+1)$-matrix model which represents the dilute Potts model on random dynamical lattices. We discuss in particular duality of boundary conditions for open random surfaces.

Adding and multiplying random matrices: a generalization of Voiculescu's formulae

In this paper, we give an elementary proof of the additivity of the functional inverses of the resolvents of large $N$ random matrices, using recently developed matrix model techniques. This proof also gives a very natural generalization of these formulae to the case of measures with an external field. A similar approach yields a relation of the same type for multiplication of random matrices.

Quelques applications de l'Ansatz de Bethe (Some applications of the Bethe Ansatz)

The Bethe Ansatz is a method that is used in quantum integrable models in order to solve them explicitly. This method is explained here in a general framework, which applies to 1D quantum spin chains, 2D statistical lattice models (vertex models) and relativistic field theories with 1 space dimension and 1 time dimension. The connection with quantum groups is expounded. Several applications are then presented. Finite size corrections are calculated via two methods: The Non-Linear Integral Equations, which are applied to the study of the states of the affine Toda model with imaginary coupling, and their interpolation between the high energy (ultra-violet) and low energy (infra-red) regions; and the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz Equations, along with the associated Fusion Equations, which are used to determine the thermodynamic properties of the generalized multi-channel Kondo model. The latter is then studied in more detail, still using the Bethe Ansatz and quantum groups, so as to characterize the spectrum of the low energy excitations.

Two-Matrix model with ABAB interaction

Using recently developed methods of character expansions we solve exactly in the large N limit a new two-matrix model of hermitean matrices A and B with the action S={1\over 2}(\tr A^2+\tr B^2)-{α\over 4}(\tr A^4+\tr B^4) -{β\over 2} \tr(AB)^2. This model can be mapped onto a special case of the 8-vertex model on dynamical planar graphs. The solution is parametrized in terms of elliptic functions. A phase transition is found: the critical point is a conformal field theory with central charge c=1 coupled to 2D quantum gravity.

Non-Linear Integral Equations for complex Affine Toda associated to simply laced Lie algebras

A set of coupled non-linear integral equations is derived for a class of models connected with the quantum group $U_q(\hat g)$ ($g$ simply laced Lie algebra), which are solvable using the Bethe Ansatz; these equations describe arbitrary excited states of a system with finite spatial length $L$. They generalize the Destri-De Vega equation for the Sine-Gordon/massive Thirring model to affine Toda field theory with imaginary coupling constant. As an application, the central charge and all the conformal weights of the UV conformal field theory are extracted in a straightforward manner. The quantum group truncation for $q$ at a root of unity is discussed in detail; in the UV limit we recover through this procedure the RCFTs with extended $W(g)$ conformal symmetry.

The generalized multi-channel Kondo model: Thermodynamics and fusion equations

The SU(N) generalization of the multi-channel Kondo model with arbitrary rectangular impurity representations is considered by means of the Bethe Ansatz. The thermodynamics of the model is analyzed by introducing modified fusion equations for the impurity, leading to a simple description of the different IR fixed points of the theory. The entropy at zero temperature is discussed; in particular the overscreened case is explained in terms of quantum group representation.

Universality of correlation functions of hermitian random matrices in an external field

The behavior of correlation functions is studied in a class of matrix models characterized by a measure $\exp(-S)$ containing a potential term and an external source term: $S=N\tr(V(M)-MA)$. In the large $N$ limit, the short-distance behavior is found to be identical to the one obtained in previously studied matrix models, thus extending the universality of the level-spacing distribution. The calculation of correlation functions involves (finite $N$) determinant formulae, reducing the problem to the large $N$ asymptotic analysis of a single kernel $K$. This is performed by an appropriate matrix integral formulation of $K$. Multi-matrix generalizations of these results are discussed.

Random hermitian matrices in an external field

In this article, a model of random hermitian matrices is considered, in which the measure $\exp(-S)$ contains a general U(N)-invariant potential and an external source term: $S=N\tr(V(M)+MA)$. The generalization of known determinant formulae leads to compact expressions for the correlation functions of the energy levels. These expressions, exact at finite $N$, are potentially useful for asymptotic analysis.
