Optimal Path Planning with Localization constraints

This paper studies UAV path planning in areas where GPS signals are not present. Because these drones can easily get lost when they don't have GPS, they must rely on dead reckoning and occasionally pass near cellular towers, which act as landmarks to reset and fix their position. The goal is to find the shortest path from a start to a goal location while keeping the estimation uncertainty within a given bound. To solve this problem, we propose a localization-constrained A* planner that treats uncertainty as a hard constraint during search. The robot state and covariance are propagated using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), and only paths that satisfy the covariance limit are considered. We also show that the proposed method does not affect heuristic used in A* and remains admissible and consistent, ensuring optimality among all feasible paths. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations and PyBullet quadrotor test show that the proposed method finds shorter and more reliable paths compared to RRT* and PRM, while always satisfying the uncertainty constraint.

EcoBoat: Design and Experimental Validation of an Autonomous Body-Board Boat For Cleaning Water Bodies

Cleaning water bodies such as swimming pools and lakes typically demands significant manual effort or reliance on costly, sensor-intensive robotic systems. This paper presents EcoBoat, a low-cost autonomous surface vehicle built on a modified hull, designed to collect floating debris in both indoor and outdoor water bodies. For indoor environments, EcoBoat uses ultrasonic sensors to detect boundaries and obstacles, combining random-walk motion with boundary-following behavior. For outdoor environments, it relies on GPS-based geofencing paired with a random-walk strategy for area coverage. A key design feature is a Tesla-valve-inspired collection basket that allows debris intake during forward motion while preventing its escape during turning or braking. Field experiments in pools and lakes validated the design through iterative refinement, demonstrating that a minimalist sensing and computation approach can achieve effective, versatile debris collection across diverse water bodies.

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Approach for a Single Vehicle Persistent Surveillance Problem with Fuel Constraints

This article presents a deep reinforcement learning-based approach to tackle a persistent surveillance mission requiring a single unmanned aerial vehicle initially stationed at a depot with fuel or time-of-flight constraints to repeatedly visit a set of targets with equal priority. Owing to the vehicle's fuel or time-of-flight constraints, the vehicle must be regularly refueled, or its battery must be recharged at the depot. The objective of the problem is to determine an optimal sequence of visits to the targets that minimizes the maximum time elapsed between successive visits to any target while ensuring that the vehicle never runs out of fuel or charge. We present a deep reinforcement learning algorithm to solve this problem and present the results of numerical experiments that corroborate the effectiveness of this approach in comparison with common-sense greedy heuristics.

Cooperative Planning for Fuel-constrained Aerial Vehicles and Ground-based Refueling Vehicles for Large-Scale Coverage

Low cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) need multiple refuels to accomplish large area coverage. The number of refueling stations and their placement plays a vital role in determining coverage efficiency. In this paper, we propose the use of a ground-based refueling vehicle (RV) to increase the operational range of a UAV in both spatial and temporal domains. Determining optimal routes for the UAV and RV, and selecting optimized locations for refueling to aid in minimizing coverage time is a challenging problem due to different vehicle speeds, coupling between refueling location placement, and the coverage area at each location. We develop a two-stage strategy for coupled route planning for UAV and RV to perform a coverage mission. The first stage computes a minimal set of refueling sites that permit a feasible UAV route. In the second stage, multiple Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulations are developed to plan optimal routes for the UAV and the refueling vehicle taking into account the feasible set of refueling sites generated in stage one. The performance of different formulations is compared empirically. In addition, computationally efficient heuristics are developed to solve the routing problem. Extensive simulations are conducted to corroborate the effectiveness of proposed approaches.

Optimal Rendezvous Trajectory for Unmanned Aerial-Ground Vehicles

Fixed-wind unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are essential for low cost aerial surveillance and mapping applications in remote regions. One of the main limitations of UAVs is limited fuel capacity and hence requires periodic refueling to accomplish a mission. The usual mechanism of commanding the UAV to return to a stationary base station for refueling can result in fuel wastage and inefficient mission operation time. Alternatively, unmanned gound vehicle (UGV) can be used as a mobile refueling unit where the UAV will rendezvous with the UGV for refueling. In order to accurately perform this task in the presence of wind disturbances, we need to determine an optimal trajectory in 3D taking UAV and UGV dynamics and kinematics into account. In this paper, we propose an optimal control formulation to generate a tunable UAV trajectory for rendezvous on a moving UGV taking wind disturbances into account. By a suitable choice of the value of an aggressiveness index in our problem setting, we are able to control the UAV rendezvous behavior. Several numerical results are presented to show the reliability and effectiveness of our approach.
