Experimental observation of hyperbolic spacetime dynamics

Understanding quantum dynamics in curved spacetime is a central challenge at the intersection of quantum mechanics and gravity. Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) spacetime plays a pivotal role in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, which relates gravitational dynamics in the AdS bulk to a conformal field theory (CFT) living on its boundary. Despite its foundational importance, direct experimental access to dynamical quantum phenomena in Lorentzian AdS spacetime has so far remained out of reach. Here, we report the first experimental emulation of fermionic wave packet dynamics in Lorentzian AdS spacetime using a photonic platform. By mapping the Dirac equation in curved spacetime onto the propagation of light in engineered wave\-guide arrays, we directly observe gravitational confinement of relativistic wave packets and resolve their center-of-mass motion in real time. We identify a characteristic superposition of slow geodesic oscillations governed solely by spacetime curvature and fast Zitterbewegung arising from relativistic particle--antiparticle interference. While the geodesic frequency is independent of fermion mass, the Zitterbewegung frequency exhibits a distinct joint dependence on mass and curvature, revealing a curvature-induced modification of relativistic quantum dynamics. Our results provide the first quantitative experimental access to fermionic bulk dynamics in emulated AdS$_2$ spacetime with Lorentzian signature. This establishes a scalable analog platform that may potentially be used for exploring dynamical aspects of holography.

Wormhole-induced effective coupling in SYK chains

Inhomogeneous quantum chains have recently been considered in the context of developing novel discrete realizations of holographic dualities. To advance this programme, we explore the ground states of infinite chains with large number $N$ of Majorana fermions on each site, which interact via on-site $q$-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) couplings, as well as via additional inhomogeneous hopping terms between nearest-neighbour sites. The hopping parameters are either aperiodically or randomly distributed. Our approach unifies techniques to solve SYK-like models in the large $N$ limit with a real-space renormalization group method known as strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG). We show that the SDRG decimation of SYK dots linked by a strong hopping induces an effective hopping interaction between their neighbouring sites. If two decimated sites are nearest neighbours, in the large $q$ limit their local ground states admit a holographic dual description in terms of eternal traversable wormholes. At the end of the SDRG procedure, we obtain a factorised ground state of the infinite inhomogeneous SYK chains that we consider, which has a spacetime description involving a sequence of wormholes. This amounts to a local near-boundary description of the bulk geometry in the context of discrete holography.

Simulating Holographic Conformal Field Theories on Hyperbolic Lattices

We demonstrate how table-top settings combining hyperbolic lattices with nonlinear dynamics universally encode aspects of the bulk-boundary-correspondence between gravity in anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space and conformal field theory (CFT). Our concrete and broadly applicable holographic toy model simulates gravitational self-interactions in the bulk and features an emergent CFT with nontrivial correlations on the boundary. We measure the CFT data contained in the two- and three-point functions and clarify how a thermal CFT is simulated through an effective black hole geometry. As a concrete example, we propose and simulate an experimentally feasible protocol to measure the holographic CFT using electrical circuits.

Entanglement in interacting Majorana chains and transitions of von Neumann algebras

We consider Majorana lattices with two-site interactions consisting of a general function of the fermion bilinear. The models are exactly solvable in the limit of a large number of on-site fermions. The four-site chain exhibits a quantum phase transition controlled by the hopping parameters and manifests itself in a discontinuous entanglement entropy, obtained by constraining the one-sided modular Hamiltonian. Inspired by recent work within the AdS/CFT correspondence, we identify transitions between types of von Neumann operator algebras throughout the phase diagram. We find transitions of the form II$_1\leftrightarrow\,$III$\,\,\leftrightarrow\,\,$I$_\infty$ that reduce to II$_1\leftrightarrow\,\,$I$_\infty$ in the strongly interacting limit, where they connect non-factorized and factorized ground states. Our results provide novel realizations of such transitions in a controlled many-body model.

Aperiodic spin chains at the boundary of hyperbolic tilings

In view of making progress towards establishing a holographic duality for theories defined on a discrete tiling of the hyperbolic plane, we consider a recently proposed boundary spin chain Hamiltonian with aperiodic couplings that are chosen such as to reflect the inflation rule, i.e. the construction principle, of the bulk tiling. As a remnant of conformal symmetry, the spin degrees of freedom are arranged in multiplets of the dihedral group under which the bulk lattice is invariant. For the boundary Hamiltonian, we use strong-disorder RG techniques and evaluate correlation functions, the entanglement entropy and mutual information for the case that the ground state is in an aperiodic singlet phase. We find that two-point functions decay as a power-law with exponent equal to one. Furthermore, we consider the case that the spin variables transform in the fundamental representation of $SO(N)$, leading to a gapless system, and find that the effective central charge obtained from the entanglement entropy scales as $\ln N$, reflecting the number of local degrees of freedom. We also determine the dependence of this central charge on the parameters specifying the bulk tiling. Moreover, we obtain an analytical expression for the mutual information, according to which there is no phase transition at any finite value of the distance between the two intervals involved.

Geometric Quantum Discord Signals Non-Factorization

We propose the information-theoretic quantity of geometric quantum discord (GQD) as an indicator of the factorization properties of a given quantum system. In particular, we show how non-vanishing discord implies that the corresponding partition function does not factorize, both for generic pure states and the thermofield double state as a state with a known geometric dual in light of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Via this analysis, we give a novel interpretation to the thermomixed double state as the best purely classical approximation of the Einstein-Rosen bridge. We connect the non-vanishing of GQD with the existence of wormhole microstates.

Breitenlohner-Freedman bound on hyperbolic tilings

We establish how the Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound is realized on tilings of two-dimensional Euclidean Anti-de Sitter space. For the continuum, the BF bound states that on Anti-de Sitter spaces, fluctuation modes remain stable for small negative mass-squared $m^2$. This follows from a real and positive total energy of the gravitational system. For finite cutoff $\varepsilon$, we solve the Klein-Gordon equation numerically on regular hyperbolic tilings. When $\varepsilon\to0$, we find that the continuum BF bound is approached in a manner independent of the tiling. We confirm these results via simulations of a hyperbolic electric circuit. Moreover, we propose a novel circuit including active elements that allows to further scan values of $m^2$ above the BF bound.

Towards Explicit Discrete Holography: Aperiodic Spin Chains from Hyperbolic Tilings

We propose a new example of discrete holography that provides a new step towards establishing the AdS/CFT duality for discrete spaces. A class of boundary Hamiltonians is obtained in a natural way from regular tilings of the hyperbolic Poincaré disk, via an inflation rule that allows to construct the tiling using concentric layers of tiles. The models in this class are aperiodic spin chains, whose sequences of couplings are obtained from the bulk inflation rule. We explicitly choose the aperiodic XXZ spin chain with spin 1/2 degrees of freedom as an example. The properties of this model are studied by using strong disorder renormalization group techniques, which provide a tensor network construction for the ground state of this spin chain. This can be regarded as discrete bulk reconstruction. Moreover we compute the entanglement entropy in this setup in two different ways: a discretization of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula and a generalization of the standard computation for the boundary aperiodic Hamiltonian. For both approaches, a logarithmic growth of the entanglement entropy in the subsystem size is identified. The coefficients, i.e. the effective central charges, depend on the bulk discretization parameters in both cases, albeit in a different way.

Quantum Complexity as Hydrodynamics

As a new step towards defining complexity for quantum field theories, we map Nielsen operator complexity for $SU(N)$ gates to two-dimensional hydrodynamics. We develop a tractable large $N$ limit that leads to regular geometries on the manifold of unitaries as $N$ is taken to infinity. To achieve this, we introduce a basis of non-commutative plane waves for the $\mathfrak{su}(N)$ algebra and define a metric with polynomial penalty factors. Through the Euler-Arnold approach we identify incompressible inviscid hydrodynamics on the two-torus as a novel effective theory of large-qudit operator complexity. For large $N$, our cost function captures two essential properties of holographic complexity measures: ergodicity and conjugate points.

Fractional Klein-Gordon Equation on AdS$_{2+1}$

We propose a covariant definition of the fractional Klein-Gordon equation with long-range interactions independent of the metric of the underlying manifold. As an example we consider the fractional Klein-Gordon equation on AdS$_{2+1}$, computing the explicit kernel representation of the fractional Laplace-Beltrami operator as well as the two-point propagator of the fractional Klein-Gordon equation. Our results suggest that the propagator only exists if the mass is small compared to the inverse AdS radius, presumably because the AdS space expands faster with distance as a flat space of the same dimension. Our results are expected to be useful in particular for new applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence within statistical mechanics and quantum information.
