Generalized hydrodynamics of free fermions under extensive-charge monitoring

We study transport dynamics of free fermions subject to the external monitoring of a conserved charge over an extensive region. Focusing on bipartition protocols, we consider monitoring the total particle number over half of the system, and study the profiles of local charges and currents at hydrodynamic scales. While the Lindbladian describing the averaged dynamics is non-local, we show that the profiles can be understood in terms of localized impurities. We present a general framework based on the generalized hydrodynamics (GHD) picture, allowing for a hybrid numerical-analytic solution of the quench dynamics at hydrodynamic scales. We illustrate our approach for domain-wall initial states, showing that monitoring leads to discontinuities in the profiles that become more pronounced as the rate increases and that lead to the absence of transport in the Zeno limit of infinite monitoring rates. Our GHD framework could be naturally extended to interacting systems, paving the way for a systematic study of transport of integrable models subject to extensive-charge measurements.

Correlation and entanglement dynamics of free fermions in disguise

We study the nonequilibrium dynamics following a quantum quench in spin chains that can be solved via a mapping to free fermions in disguise. These models feature an exponential degeneracy of all energy eigenvalues, raising the question of the validity of the established framework describing the properties of integrable systems out of equilibrium. We present two main results. First, we develop an analytic method to compute the quasi-momentum distribution function characterizing the generalized Gibbs ensemble, and derive an analytic formula to compute the corresponding expectation values for special observables. Second, we adapt the standard formula for the entanglement growth based on the quasi-particle picture, discussing how our constructions do not explicitly make use of the zero-energy auxiliary free fermions responsible of the exponential degeneracies. We test our theoretical predictions against numerical tensor-network computations for different initial states and Hamiltonian parameters. For the local observables, we find excellent agreement. For the entanglement dynamics, we find small deviations suggesting that the standard quasi-particle picture is only approximately correct for the initial state considered. Our results represent a first step towards the extension of the established framework of integrable systems out of equilibrium to models hosting free fermions in disguise.

Entanglement Spectrum Dynamics as a Probe for Non-Hermitian Bulk-Boundary Correspondence in Systems with Periodic Boundaries

It has recently been established that open quantum systems may exhibit a strong spectral sensitivity to boundary conditions, known as the non-Hermitian/Liouvillian skin effect (NHSE/LSE), making the topological properties of the system boundary-condition sensitive. In this Letter, we ask the query: Can topological phase transitions of open quantum systems, captured by open boundary conditioned invariants, be observed in the dynamics of a system in a periodic boundary condition, even in the presence of NHSE/LSE? We affirmatively respond to this question, by considering the quench dynamics of entanglement spectrum in a periodic open quantum fermionic system. We demonstrate that the entanglement spectrum exhibits zero-crossings only when this periodic system is quenched from a topologically trivial to non-trivial phase, defined from the spectrum in open boundary conditions, even in systems featuring LSE. Our results reveal that non-Hermitian topological phases leave a distinctive imprint on the unconditional dynamics within a subsystem of fermionic systems.

Thermodynamics of a continuous quantum heat engine: Interplay between population and coherence

We present a detailed thermodynamic analysis of a three-level quantum heat engine coupled continuously to hot and cold reservoirs. The system is driven by an oscillating external field and is described by the Markovian quantum master equation. We use the general form of the dissipator which is consistent with thermodynamics. We calculate the heat, power, and efficiency of the system for the heat-engine operating regime and also examine the thermodynamic uncertainty relation. The efficiency of the system is strongly dependent on the structure of the dissipator, and the correlations between different levels can be an obstacle for ideal operation. In quantum systems, the heat flux is decomposed into the population and coherent parts. The coherent part is specific to quantum systems, and in contrast to the population part, it cannot be expressed by a simple series expansion in the linear-response regime. We discuss how the interplay between the population and coherent parts affects the performance of the heat engine.
