Complex synchronization patterns in the human connectome network

A major challenge in neuroscience is posed by the need for relating the emerging dynamical features of brain activity with the underlying modular structure of neural connections, hierarchically organized throughout several scales. The spontaneous emergence of coherence and synchronization across such scales is crucial to neural function, while its anomalies often relate to pathological conditions. Here we provide a numerical study of synchronization dynamics in the human connectome network. Our purpose is to provide a detailed characterization of the recently uncovered broad dynamic regime, interposed between order and disorder, which stems from the hierarchical modular organization of the human connectome. In this regime -similar in essence to a Griffiths phase- synchronization dynamics are trapped within metastable attractors of local coherence. Here we explore the role of noise, as an effective description of external perturbations, and discuss how its presence accounts for the ability of the system to escape intermittently from such attractors and explore complex dynamic repertoires of locally coherent states, in analogy with experimentally recorded patterns of cerebral activity.

Interfacial depinning transitions in disordered media: revisiting an old puzzle

Interfaces advancing through random media represent a number of different problems in physics, biology and other disciplines. Here, we study the pinning/depinning transition of the prototypical non-equilibrium interfacial model, i.e. the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, advancing in a disordered medium. We analyze separately the cases of positive and negative non-linearity coefficients, which are believed to exhibit qualitatively different behavior: the positive case shows a continuous transition that can be related to directed-percolation-depinning while in the negative case there is a discontinuous transition and faceted interfaces appear. Some studies have argued from different perspectives that both cases share the same universal behavior. Here, by using a number of computational and scaling techniques we shed light on this puzzling situation and conclude that the two cases are intrinsically different.

Frustrated hierarchical synchronization and emergent complexity in the human connectome network

The spontaneous emergence of coherent behavior through synchronization plays a key role in neural function, and its anomalies often lie at the basis of pathologies. Here we employ a parsimonious (mesoscopic) approach to study analytically and computationally the synchronization (Kuramoto) dynamics on the actual human-brain connectome network. We elucidate the existence of a so-far-uncovered intermediate phase, placed between the standard synchronous and asynchronous phases, i.e. between order and disorder. This novel phase stems from the hierarchical modular organization of the connectome. Where one would expect a hierarchical synchronization process, we show that the interplay between structural bottlenecks and quenched intrinsic frequency heterogeneities at many different scales, gives rise to frustrated synchronization, metastability, and chimera-like states, resulting in a very rich and complex phenomenology. We uncover the origin of the dynamic freezing behind these features by using spectral graph theory and discuss how the emerging complex synchronization patterns relate to the need for the brain to access --in a robust though flexible way-- a large variety of functional attractors and dynamical repertoires without ad hoc fine-tuning to a critical point.
