Consequences of an attractive force on collective modes and dust structures in a strongly coupled dusty plasma

We present an investigation of the combined effects of the Debye-Huckel (DH) repulsive and overlaping Debye spheres (ODS) attractive interaction potentials around charged dust particles on collective modes, phase separation and ordered dust structures in a strongly coupled dusty plasma. We obtain static and dynamical information via Molecular Dynamics simulations in the liquid and crystallized phases and identify the onset of an instability in the transverse collective mode, by using (zero-temperature) lattice summation method. The present results are useful for understanding the origin of coagulation/agglomeration of charged dust particles and the formation of ordered dust structures in low-temperature laboratory and space dusty plasmas.

Nonlinear propagation of light in Dirac matter

The nonlinear interaction between intense laser light and a quantum plasma is modeled by a collective Dirac equation coupled with the Maxwell equations. The model is used to study the nonlinear propagation of relativistically intense laser light in a quantum plasma including the electron spin-1/2 effect. The relativistic effects due to the high-intensity laser light lead, in general, to a downshift of the laser frequency, similar to a classical plasma where the relativistic mass increase leads to self-induced transparency of laser light and other associated effects. The electron spin-1/2 effects lead to a frequency up- or downshift of the electromagnetic (EM) wave, depending on the spin state of the plasma and the polarization of the EM wave. For laboratory solid density plasmas, the spin-1/2 effects on the propagation of light are small, but they may be significant in super-dense plasma in the core of white dwarf stars. We also discuss extensions of the model to include kinetic effects of a distribution of the electrons on the nonlinear propagation of EM waves in a quantum plasma.

Drift wave turbulence in a dense semiclassical magnetoplasma

A semiclassical nonlinear collisional drift wave model for dense magnetized plasmas is developed and solved numerically. The effects of fluid electron density fluctuations associated with quantum statistical pressure and quantum Bohm force are included, and their influences on the collisional drift wave instability and the resulting fully developed nanoscale drift wave turbulence are discussed. It is found that the quantum effects increase the growth rate of the collisional drift wave instability, and introduce a finite de Broglie length screening on the drift wave turbulent density perturbations. The relevance to nanoscale turbulence in nonuniform dense magnetoplasmas is discussed.

Relativistic Laser-Plasma Interactions in the Quantum Regime

We investigate the nonlinear interaction between a relativistically strong laser beam and a plasma in the quantum regime. The collective behavior of the electrons is modeled by a Klein-Gordon equation, which is nonlinearly coupled with the electromagnetic wave through the Maxwell and Poisson equations. This allows us to study the nonlinear interaction between arbitrarily large amplitude electromagnetic waves and a quantum plasma. We have used our system of nonlinear equations to study theoretically the parametric instabilities involving stimulated Raman scattering and modulational instabilities. A model for quasi-steady state propagating electromagnetic wavepackets is also derived, and which shows the possibility of localized solitary structures in the quantum plasma. Numerical simulations demonstrate the collapse and acceleration of the electrons in the nonlinear stage of the modulational instability, as well as the possibility of wake-field acceleration of the electrons to relativistic speeds by short laser pulses at nanometer length scales. The study has importance for the nonlinear interaction between a super-intense X-ray laser light and a solid-density plasma, where quantum effects are important.

Instability and Nonlinear Evolution of Narrow-Band Directional Ocean Waves

The instability and nonlinear evolution of directional ocean waves is investigated numerically by means of simulations of the governing kinetic equation for narrow-band surface waves. Our simulation results reveal the onset of the modulational instability for long-crested wave-trains, which agrees well with recent large-scale experiments in wave-basins, where it was found that narrower directional spectra leads to self-focusing of ocean waves and an enhanced probability of extreme events. We find that the modulational instability is nonlinearly saturated by a broadening of the wave-spectrum, which leads to the stabilization of the water-wave system. Applications of our results to other fields of physics, such as nonlinear optics and plasma physics are discussed.

Stability of two-dimensional ion-acoustic wave packets in quantum plasmas

The nonlinear propagation of two-dimensional (2D) quantum ion-acoustic waves (QIAWs) is studied in a quantum electron-ion plasma. By using a 2D quantum hydrodynamic model and the method of multiple scales, a new set of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations is derived which governs the slow modulation of the 2D QIAW packets. The oblique modulational instability (MI) is then studied by means of a corresponding nonlinear Schroedinger equation derived from the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations. It is shown that the quantum parameter H (proportional to $\hbar$), associated with the Bohm potential, shifts the MI domains around the $kθ$-plane, where $k$ is the carrier wave number and $θ$ is the angle of modulation. In particular, the ion-acoustic wave (IAW), previously known to be stable under parallel modulation in classical plasmas, is shown to be unstable in quantum plasmas. The growth rate of the MI is found to be quenched by the obliqueness of modulation. The modulation of 2D QIAW packets along $\mathbf{k}$ is shown to be described by a set of Davey-Stewartson-like equations. The latter can be studied for the 2D wave collapse in dense plasmas. The predicted results, which could be important to look for stable wave propagation in laboratory experiments as well as in dense astrophysical plasmas, thus generalize the theory of MI of IAW propagations both in classical and quantum electron-ion plasmas.

Dispersion properties of electrostatic oscillations in quantum plasmas

We present a derivation of the dispersion relation for electrostatic oscillations (ESOs) in a zero temperature quantum plasma. In the latter, degenerate electrons are governed by the Wigner equation, while non-degenerate ions follow the classical fluid equations. The Poisson equation determines the electrostatic wave potential. We consider parameters ranging from semiconductor plasmas to metallic plasmas and electron densities of compressed matter such as in laser-compression schemes and dense astrophysical objects. Due to the wave diffraction caused by overlapping electron wave function due to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle in dense plasmas, we have possibility of Landau damping of the high-frequency electron plasma oscillations (EPOs) at large enough wavenumbers. The exact dispersion relations for the EPOs are solved numerically and compared to the ones obtained by using approximate formulas for the electron susceptibility in the high- and low-frequency cases.

Nonlinear aspects of quantum plasma physics

Dense quantum plasmas are ubiquitous in planetary interiors and in compact astrophysical objects, in semiconductors and micro-mechanical systems, as well as in the next generation intense laser-solid density plasma interaction experiments and in quantum x-ray free-electron lasers. In contrast to classical plasmas, one encounters extremely high plasma number density and low temperature in quantum plasmas. The latter are composed of electrons, positrons and holes, which are degenerate. Positrons (holes) have the same (slightly different) mass as electrons, but opposite charge. The degenerate charged particles (electrons, positrons, holes) follow the Fermi-Dirac statistics. In quantum plasmas, there are new forces associated with i) quantum statistical electron and positron pressures, ii) electron and positron tunneling through the Bohm potential, and iii) electron and positron angular momentum spin. Inclusion of these quantum forces provides possibility of very high-frequency dispersive electrostatic and electromagnetic waves (e.g. in the hard x-ray and gamma rays regimes) having extremely short wavelengths. In this review paper, we present theoretical backgrounds for some important nonlinear aspects of wave-wave and wave-electron interactions in dense quantum plasmas. Specifically, we shall focus on nonlinear electrostatic electron and ion plasma waves, novel aspects of 3D quantum electron fluid turbulence, as well as nonlinearly coupled intense electromagnetic waves and localized plasma wave structures. Also discussed are the phase space kinetic structures and mechanisms that can generate quasi-stationary magnetic fields in dense quantum plasmas. The influence of the external magnetic field and the electron angular momentum spin on the electromagnetic wave dynamics is discussed.

Nonlinear Interactions Between Gravitational Radiation and Modified Alfven Modes in Astrophysical Dusty Plasmas

We present an investigation of nonlinear interactions between Gravitational Radiation and modified Alfvén modes in astrophysical dusty plasmas. Assuming that stationary charged dust grains form neutralizing background in an electron-ion-dust plasma, we obtain the three wave coupling coefficients, and calculate the growth rates for parametrically coupled gravitational radiation and modified Alfvén-Rao modes. The threshold value of the gravitational wave amplitude associated with convective stabilization is particularly small if the gravitational frequency is close to twice the modified Alfvén wave-frequency. The implication of our results to astrophysical dusty plasmas is discussed.

Quantum electrodynamical modes in pair plasmas

We predict the existence of new nonlinear electromagnetic wave modes in pair plasmas. The plasma may be either non-magnetized or immersed in an external magnetic field. The existence of these modes depends on the interaction of an intense circularly polarized electromagnetic wave with a plasma, where the nonlinear quantum vacuum effects are taken into account. This gives rise to new couplings between matter and radiation. We focus on pair plasmas, since the new modes are expected to exist in highly energetic environments, such as pulsar magnetospheres and the next generation of laser--plasma systems.

A new electromagnetic wave in a pair plasma

A new nonlinear electromagnetic wave mode in a plasma is reported. Its existence depends on the interaction of an intense circularly polarized electromagnetic wave with a plasma, where quantum electrodynamical photon--photon scattering is taken into account. As an illustration, we consider a pair plasma and show that the new mode can be significant in astrophysical settings and in the next generation laser-plasma systems.

Nonlinear Propagation of Incoherent Photons in a Radiation Background

The nonlinear propagation of intense incoherent photons in a photon gas is considered. The photon-photon interactions are governed by a pair of equations comprising a wave-kinetic equation for the incoherent photons in the presence of the slowly varying energy density perturbations of sound-like waves, and an equation for the latter waves in a background where the photon coupling is caused by quantum electrodynamical effects. The coupled equations are used to derive a dispersion relation, which admits new classes of modulational instabilities of incoherent photons. The present instabilities can lead to fragmentation of broadband short photon pulses in astrophysical and laboratory settings.

Modulational instabilities in neutrino--anti-neutrino interactions

We analyze the collective behavior of neutrinos and antineutrinos in a dense background. Using the Wigner transform technique, it is shown that the interaction can be modelled by a coupled system of nonlinear Vlasov-like equations. From these equations, we derive a dispersion relation for neutrino-antineutrino interactions on a general background. The dispersion relation admits a novel modulational instability. The results are examined, together with a numerical example, and we discuss the induced density inhomogeneities using parameters relevant to the early Universe.

Dynamics of radiation due to vacuum nonlinearities

In quantum electrodynamics, photon-photon scattering can be the result of the exchange of virtual electron-positron pairs. This gives rise to a non-trivial dispersion relation for a single photon moving on a background of electromagnetic fields. Knowledge of the dispersion relation can be transferred, using standard methods, into new insights in the dynamical equations for the photons. Effectively, those equations will contain different types of self-interaction terms, depending on whether the photons are coherent or not. It is shown that coherent photons are governed by a nonlinear Schroedinger type equation, such that the self-interaction terms vanish in the limit of parallel propagating waves. For incoherent photons, a set of fluid equations can determine the evolution of the corresponding radiation gas. In the case of a self-interacting radiation fluid, it is shown that Landau damping can occur.

Splitting and focusing of neutrino collective states

It is shown that the collective nonlinear interactions between intense neutrino or anti-neutrino fluxes and a dense neutrino plasma are governed by a multi-dimensional coupled cubic Schrödinger equation in which the interaction potential is positive or negative depending on the neutrino type. The cubic Schrödinger equation describes the splitting and focusing of intense neutrino beams due to the nonlinear excitations associated with the modifications of the individual neutrino energies in a dense neutrino background.
