Complete mode conversion for elastic waves reflected by elastic metamaterial slab with double hexapole resonances

In this study, we investigate the phenomenon of mode conversion in elastic bulk waves using coupled hexapole resonances. A metamaterial slab is proposed enabling the complete conversion between longitudinal and transverse modes. Each unit of the elastic metamaterial slab comprises a pair of scatterers, and their relative direction is oriented at an oblique angle. The interaction between the coupled hexapoles and the background results in oblique displacements, which are responsible for the mode conversion. Moreover, this conversion exhibits a broader frequency range compared to the quadrupole resonance. This innovative design significantly broadens the range of possibilities for developing mode-converting metamaterials.

Exploiting disorder to probe spin and energy hydrodynamics

An outstanding challenge in large-scale quantum platforms is to simultaneously achieve strong interactions, giving rise to the most interesting behaviors, and local addressing -that can probe them. In the context of correlated phases, local addressing enables one to directly probe the nature of the system's order. Meanwhile, for out-ofequilibrium dynamics, such addressing allows the study of quantum information spreading and operator growth. Here, we introduce a novel technique that enables the measurement of local correlation functions, down to single-site resolution, despite access to only global controls. Our approach leverages the intrinsic disorder present in a solid-state spin ensemble to dephase the nonlocal components of the correlation function. Utilizing this toolset, we measure both the spin and energy transport in nuclear spin chains. By tuning the interaction Hamiltonian via Floquet engineering, we investigate the cross-over between ballistic and diffusive hydrodynamics. Interestingly, when the system is both interacting and (nearly-)integrable, we observe the coexistence of diffusive spin transport with ballistic energy transport.

High-fidelity gates with mid-circuit erasure conversion in a metastable neutral atom qubit

The development of scalable, high-fidelity qubits is a key challenge in quantum information science. Neutral atom qubits have progressed rapidly in recent years, demonstrating programmable processors and quantum simulators with scaling to hundreds of atoms. Exploring new atomic species, such as alkaline earth atoms, or combining multiple species can provide new paths to improving coherence, control and scalability. For example, for eventual application in quantum error correction, it is advantageous to realize qubits with structured error models, such as biased Pauli errors or conversion of errors into detectable erasures. In this work, we demonstrate a new neutral atom qubit, using the nuclear spin of a long-lived metastable state in ${}^{171}$Yb. The long coherence time and fast excitation to the Rydberg state allow one- and two-qubit gates with fidelities of 0.9990(1) and 0.980(1), respectively. Importantly, a significant fraction of all gate errors result in decays out of the qubit subspace, to the ground state. By performing fast, mid-circuit detection of these errors, we convert them into erasure errors; during detection, the induced error probability on qubits remaining in the computational space is less than $10^{-5}$. This work establishes metastable ${}^{171}$Yb as a promising platform for realizing fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Manipulating solid-state spin concentration through charge transport

Solid-state spin defects are attractive candidates for developing quantum sensors and simulators. The spin and charge degrees of freedom in large defect ensembles are a promising platform to explore complex many-body dynamics and the emergence of quantum hydrodynamics. However, many interesting properties can be revealed only upon changes in the density of defects, which instead is usually fixed in material systems. Increasing the interaction strength by creating denser defect ensembles also brings more decoherence. Ideally one would like to control the spin concentration at will, while keeping fixed decoherence effects. Here we show that by exploiting charge transport, we can take some first steps in this direction, while at the same time characterizing charge transport and its capture by defects. By exploiting the cycling process of ionization and recombination of NV centers in diamonds, we pump electrons from the valence band to the conduction band. These charges are then transported to modulate the spin concentration by changing the charge state of material defects. By developing a wide-field imaging setup integrated with a fast single photon detector array, we achieve a direct and efficient characterization of the charge redistribution process by measuring the complete spectrum of the spin bath with micrometer-scale spatial resolution. We demonstrate the concentration increase of the dominant spin defects by a factor of 2 while keeping the $T_2$ of the NV center, which also provides a potential experimental demonstration of the suppression of spin flip-flops via hyperfine interactions. Our work paves the way to studying many-body dynamics with temporally and spatially tunable interaction strengths in hybrid charge-spin systems.

FECANet: Boosting Few-Shot Semantic Segmentation with Feature-Enhanced Context-Aware Network

Few-shot semantic segmentation is the task of learning to locate each pixel of the novel class in the query image with only a few annotated support images. The current correlation-based methods construct pair-wise feature correlations to establish the many-to-many matching because the typical prototype-based approaches cannot learn fine-grained correspondence relations. However, the existing methods still suffer from the noise contained in naive correlations and the lack of context semantic information in correlations. To alleviate these problems mentioned above, we propose a Feature-Enhanced Context-Aware Network (FECANet). Specifically, a feature enhancement module is proposed to suppress the matching noise caused by inter-class local similarity and enhance the intra-class relevance in the naive correlation. In addition, we propose a novel correlation reconstruction module that encodes extra correspondence relations between foreground and background and multi-scale context semantic features, significantly boosting the encoder to capture a reliable matching pattern. Experiments on PASCAL-$5^i$ and COCO-$20^i$ datasets demonstrate that our proposed FECANet leads to remarkable improvement compared to previous state-of-the-arts, demonstrating its effectiveness.

An Efficient End-to-End Transformer with Progressive Tri-modal Attention for Multi-modal Emotion Recognition

Recent works on multi-modal emotion recognition move towards end-to-end models, which can extract the task-specific features supervised by the target task compared with the two-phase pipeline. However, previous methods only model the feature interactions between the textual and either acoustic and visual modalities, ignoring capturing the feature interactions between the acoustic and visual modalities. In this paper, we propose the multi-modal end-to-end transformer (ME2ET), which can effectively model the tri-modal features interaction among the textual, acoustic, and visual modalities at the low-level and high-level. At the low-level, we propose the progressive tri-modal attention, which can model the tri-modal feature interactions by adopting a two-pass strategy and can further leverage such interactions to significantly reduce the computation and memory complexity through reducing the input token length. At the high-level, we introduce the tri-modal feature fusion layer to explicitly aggregate the semantic representations of three modalities. The experimental results on the CMU-MOSEI and IEMOCAP datasets show that ME2ET achieves the state-of-the-art performance. The further in-depth analysis demonstrates the effectiveness, efficiency, and interpretability of the proposed progressive tri-modal attention, which can help our model to achieve better performance while significantly reducing the computation and memory cost. Our code will be publicly available.

Video Moment Retrieval from Text Queries via Single Frame Annotation

Video moment retrieval aims at finding the start and end timestamps of a moment (part of a video) described by a given natural language query. Fully supervised methods need complete temporal boundary annotations to achieve promising results, which is costly since the annotator needs to watch the whole moment. Weakly supervised methods only rely on the paired video and query, but the performance is relatively poor. In this paper, we look closer into the annotation process and propose a new paradigm called "glance annotation". This paradigm requires the timestamp of only one single random frame, which we refer to as a "glance", within the temporal boundary of the fully supervised counterpart. We argue this is beneficial because comparing to weak supervision, trivial cost is added yet more potential in performance is provided. Under the glance annotation setting, we propose a method named as Video moment retrieval via Glance Annotation (ViGA) based on contrastive learning. ViGA cuts the input video into clips and contrasts between clips and queries, in which glance guided Gaussian distributed weights are assigned to all clips. Our extensive experiments indicate that ViGA achieves better results than the state-of-the-art weakly supervised methods by a large margin, even comparable to fully supervised methods in some cases.

Topological interface states induced by incident angle in the 1D elastic wave system

Topological interface states are currently attracting rapidly growing attention in classical wave systems. However, little work has been done on topological interface states in one-dimensional (1D) elastic wave systems, especially in the case of oblique incidence. This paper theoretically demonstrates the realization of topological interface states of elastic waves in a 1D composite plate structure composed of two phononic crystals (PCs) with different topological characteristics, which can be regulated by the incident angle. For the out-of-plane SH mode, multiple topological interface states can coexist in different common bandgaps. For the in-plane complex P-SV coupled mode, topological interface states can exist in both "partial-polarization" and "omni-polarization" bandgaps. All these interface states are in the wide frequency and incident angle regions. We also discuss the polarization and the mode conversion of the interface states. Our results provide an innovative method to excite and tune topologically protected interface states for elastic waves, which may have potential applications in obtaining strong local vibration for different polarized elastic wave modes.

PR-Net: Preference Reasoning for Personalized Video Highlight Detection

Personalized video highlight detection aims to shorten a long video to interesting moments according to a user's preference, which has recently raised the community's attention. Current methods regard the user's history as holistic information to predict the user's preference but negating the inherent diversity of the user's interests, resulting in vague preference representation. In this paper, we propose a simple yet efficient preference reasoning framework (PR-Net) to explicitly take the diverse interests into account for frame-level highlight prediction. Specifically, distinct user-specific preferences for each input query frame are produced, presented as the similarity weighted sum of history highlights to the corresponding query frame. Next, distinct comprehensive preferences are formed by the user-specific preferences and a learnable generic preference for more overall highlight measurement. Lastly, the degree of highlight and non-highlight for each query frame is calculated as semantic similarity to its comprehensive and non-highlight preferences, respectively. Besides, to alleviate the ambiguity due to the incomplete annotation, a new bi-directional contrastive loss is proposed to ensure a compact and differentiable metric space. In this way, our method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods with a relative improvement of 12% in mean accuracy precision.

Ask&Confirm: Active Detail Enriching for Cross-Modal Retrieval with Partial Query

Text-based image retrieval has seen considerable progress in recent years. However, the performance of existing methods suffers in real life since the user is likely to provide an incomplete description of an image, which often leads to results filled with false positives that fit the incomplete description. In this work, we introduce the partial-query problem and extensively analyze its influence on text-based image retrieval. Previous interactive methods tackle the problem by passively receiving users' feedback to supplement the incomplete query iteratively, which is time-consuming and requires heavy user effort. Instead, we propose a novel retrieval framework that conducts the interactive process in an Ask-and-Confirm fashion, where AI actively searches for discriminative details missing in the current query, and users only need to confirm AI's proposal. Specifically, we propose an object-based interaction to make the interactive retrieval more user-friendly and present a reinforcement-learning-based policy to search for discriminative objects. Furthermore, since fully-supervised training is often infeasible due to the difficulty of obtaining human-machine dialog data, we present a weakly-supervised training strategy that needs no human-annotated dialogs other than a text-image dataset. Experiments show that our framework significantly improves the performance of text-based image retrieval. Code is avaiable at https://github.com/CuthbertCai/Ask-Confirm.

Global2Local: Efficient Structure Search for Video Action Segmentation

Temporal receptive fields of models play an important role in action segmentation. Large receptive fields facilitate the long-term relations among video clips while small receptive fields help capture the local details. Existing methods construct models with hand-designed receptive fields in layers. Can we effectively search for receptive field combinations to replace hand-designed patterns? To answer this question, we propose to find better receptive field combinations through a global-to-local search scheme. Our search scheme exploits both global search to find the coarse combinations and local search to get the refined receptive field combination patterns further. The global search finds possible coarse combinations other than human-designed patterns. On top of the global search, we propose an expectation guided iterative local search scheme to refine combinations effectively. Our global-to-local search can be plugged into existing action segmentation methods to achieve state-of-the-art performance.

Removing the Background by Adding the Background: Towards Background Robust Self-supervised Video Representation Learning

Self-supervised learning has shown great potentials in improving the video representation ability of deep neural networks by getting supervision from the data itself. However, some of the current methods tend to cheat from the background, i.e., the prediction is highly dependent on the video background instead of the motion, making the model vulnerable to background changes. To mitigate the model reliance towards the background, we propose to remove the background impact by adding the background. That is, given a video, we randomly select a static frame and add it to every other frames to construct a distracting video sample. Then we force the model to pull the feature of the distracting video and the feature of the original video closer, so that the model is explicitly restricted to resist the background influence, focusing more on the motion changes. We term our method as \emph{Background Erasing} (BE). It is worth noting that the implementation of our method is so simple and neat and can be added to most of the SOTA methods without much efforts. Specifically, BE brings 16.4% and 19.1% improvements with MoCo on the severely biased datasets UCF101 and HMDB51, and 14.5% improvement on the less biased dataset Diving48.

Deep reinforcement learning for quantum Hamiltonian engineering

Engineering desired Hamiltonian in quantum many-body systems is essential for applications such as quantum simulation, computation and sensing. Conventional quantum Hamiltonian engineering sequences are designed using human intuition based on perturbation theory, which may not describe the optimal solution and is unable to accommodate complex experimental imperfections. Here we numerically search for Hamiltonian engineering sequences using deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques and experimentally demonstrate that they outperform celebrated sequences on a solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance quantum simulator. As an example, we aim at decoupling strongly-interacting spin-1/2 systems. We train DRL agents in the presence of different experimental imperfections and verify robustness of the output sequences both in simulations and experiments. Surprisingly, many of the learned sequences exhibit a common pattern that had not been discovered before, to our knowledge, but has an meaningful analytical description. We can thus restrict the searching space based on this control pattern, allowing to search for longer sequences, ultimately leading to sequences that are robust against dominant imperfections in our experiments. Our results not only demonstrate a general method for quantum Hamiltonian engineering, but also highlight the importance of combining black-box artificial intelligence with understanding of physical system in order to realize experimentally feasible applications.

Contextual Non-Local Alignment over Full-Scale Representation for Text-Based Person Search

Text-based person search aims at retrieving target person in an image gallery using a descriptive sentence of that person. It is very challenging since modal gap makes effectively extracting discriminative features more difficult. Moreover, the inter-class variance of both pedestrian images and descriptions is small. So comprehensive information is needed to align visual and textual clues across all scales. Most existing methods merely consider the local alignment between images and texts within a single scale (e.g. only global scale or only partial scale) then simply construct alignment at each scale separately. To address this problem, we propose a method that is able to adaptively align image and textual features across all scales, called NAFS (i.e.Non-local Alignment over Full-Scale representations). Firstly, a novel staircase network structure is proposed to extract full-scale image features with better locality. Secondly, a BERT with locality-constrained attention is proposed to obtain representations of descriptions at different scales. Then, instead of separately aligning features at each scale, a novel contextual non-local attention mechanism is applied to simultaneously discover latent alignments across all scales. The experimental results show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by 5.53% in terms of top-1 and 5.35% in terms of top-5 on text-based person search dataset. NOH-NMS: Improving Pedestrian Detection by Nearby Objects Hallucination

Greedy-NMS inherently raises a dilemma, where a lower NMS threshold will potentially lead to a lower recall rate and a higher threshold introduces more false positives. This problem is more severe in pedestrian detection because the instance density varies more intensively. However, previous works on NMS don't consider or vaguely consider the factor of the existent of nearby pedestrians. Thus, we propose Nearby Objects Hallucinator (NOH), which pinpoints the objects nearby each proposal with a Gaussian distribution, together with NOH-NMS, which dynamically eases the suppression for the space that might contain other objects with a high likelihood. Compared to Greedy-NMS, our method, as the state-of-the-art, improves by $3.9\%$ AP, $5.1\%$ Recall, and $0.8\%$ $\text{MR}^{-2}$ on CrowdHuman to $89.0\%$ AP and $92.9\%$ Recall, and $43.9\%$ $\text{MR}^{-2}$ respectively.

Observation of Floquet prethermalization in dipolar spin chains

Periodically driven Floquet quantum systems provide a promising platform to investigate novel physics out of equilibrium. Unfortunately, the drive generically heats up the system to a featureless infinite temperature state. For large driving frequency, the heat absorption rate is predicted to be exponentially small, giving rise to a long-lived prethermal regime which exhibits all the intriguing properties of Floquet systems. Here we experimentally observe Floquet prethermalization using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. We first show the relaxation of a far-from-equilibrium initial state to a long-lived prethermal state, well described by the time-independent ''prethermal'' Hamiltonian. By measuring the autocorrelation of this prethermal Hamiltonian we can further experimentally confirm the predicted exponentially slow heating rate. More strikingly, we find that in the timescale when the effective Hamiltonian picture breaks down, the Floquet system still possesses other quasi-conservation laws. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to realize robust Floquet engineering, thus enabling the experimental observation of non-trivial Floquet phases of matter.

Prethermal quasiconserved observables in Floquet quantum systems

Prethermalization, by introducing emergent quasiconserved observables, plays a crucial role in protecting Floquet many-body phases over exponentially long time, while the ultimate fate of such quasiconserved operators can signal thermalization to infinite temperature. To elucidate the properties of prethermal quasiconservation in many-body Floquet systems, here we systematically analyze infinite temperature correlations between observables. We numerically show that the late-time behavior of the autocorrelations unambiguously distinguishes quasiconserved observables from non-conserved ones, allowing to single out a set of linearly-independent quasiconserved observables. By investigating two Floquet spin models, we identify two different mechanism underlying the quasi-conservation law. First, we numerically verify energy quasiconservation when the driving frequency is large, so that the system dynamics is approximately described by a static prethermal Hamiltonian. More interestingly, under moderate driving frequency, another quasiconserved observable can still persist if the Floquet driving contains a large global rotation. We show theoretically how to calculate this conserved observable and provide numerical verification. Having systematically identified all quasiconserved observables, we can finally investigate their behavior in the infinite-time limit and thermodynamic limit, using autocorrelations obtained from both numerical simulation and experiments in solid state nuclear magnetic resonance systems.

Reflected continuously tunable acoustic metasurface with rotatable space coiling-up structure

In this paper, we propose a continuously tunable acoustic metasurface composed of identical anisotropic resonant units, each of which contains a rigid pedestal and a rotatable inclusion with space coiling-up structure. The metasurface can manipulate the reflected phase by adjusting the rotational angle of inclusion. The theoretical analysis shows that the polarization-dependent phase change can be induced by the even-order standing wave modes inside inclusion. By utilizing the rotatable inclusion, we design a tunable acoustic carpet cloaking device, which works with a wide range for incident angle. When incident waves come from different directions, the cloaking effect can be obtained by arrange the rotational angle of each inclusion.
