Measurement-Efficient Variational Quantum Linear Solver for Carleman-Linearized Nonlinear Dynamics

We present hybrid quantum-classical pipelines for solving the Duffing equation that leverage Carleman linearization and the Variational Quantum Linear Solver (VQLS). First, we demonstrate that Carleman linearization accurately approximates the weakly nonlinear Duffing equation, with errors diminishing as the truncation order increases. Next, across IBM and Xanadu platforms, we deploy VQLS with symmetry-grouped Hadamard Test evaluations under both global and local cost formulations, compare distinct Hermitianization within a common cost framework, and benchmark hardware-efficient ansatz architectures under a fixed Hermitianization. Across block-banded test cases, each method achieves near-unity fidelity and vanishing relative residuals. These results show that topology-agnostic ansatz, optimized Hermitianization, and efficient cost formulation enable VQLS to recover quantum states proportional to classical solutions for Carleman-structured systems, providing a portable recipe for quantum-in-the-loop simulation of nonlinear dynamics.

Beyond von Mises Truss Models: Emergent Bistability in Mechanical Metamaterials

We observe and analyze the phenomenon of bistability emergent from cooperative stiffening in hyper-elastic metamaterials. Using experimental and numerical results of identical geometric designs, we show evidence that a single unit is unistable while combining two units can result in bistability. Our study demonstrates that the von Mises truss model cannot describe such emergent behavior. Hence, we construct a novel and simple analytical model to explain this phenomenon.

Nonlocality-enabled inverse design of Dirac-type and higher-order degeneracies for traveling and evanescent waves in phononic crystals

We propose complete tailoring procedures with analytical precision for band degeneracies in one-dimensional (1D) nonlocal phononic crystals, focusing on the role of beyond-nearest-neighbor (BNN) interactions. Unlike trivial Dirac cones at either the center or boundary of Brillouin zone (BZ), we demonstrate non-trivial Dirac-type and higher-order band crossings at any desirable wave number within the BZ by tuning BNN interactions. Our analyses show that odd-indexed BNN interactions determine the quantity and wave number of degeneracy points, while even-indexed BNN interactions primarily affect the frequency. Moreover, we discover new evanescent wave modes and associated degeneracies in the complex-valued wave number. In addition, we study a varieties of spatial-temporal response patterns in time-domain simulations for the interplay between traveling and localized modes at the propagating and evanescent degeneracies.

Harmonically Induced Shape Morphing of Bistable Buckled Beam with Static Bias

We investigate the effect of a constant static bias force on the dynamically induced shape morphing of a pre-buckled bistable beam, focusing on the beam's ability to change its vibration to be near different stable states under harmonic excitation. Our study explores four categories of oscillatory motions: switching, reverting, vacillating, and intra-well in the parameter space. We aim to achieve transitions between stable states of the pre-buckled bistable beam with minimal excitation amplitude. Our findings demonstrate the synergistic effects between dynamic excitation and static bias force, showing a broadening of the non-fractal region for switching behavior (i.e., switching from the first stable state to the second stable state) in the parameter space. This study advances the understanding of the dynamics of key structural components for multi-stable mechanical metamaterials, offering new possibilities for novel designs in adaptive applications.

Quantum Computing for Solid Mechanics and Structural Engineering -- a Demonstration with Variational Quantum Eigensolver

Variational quantum algorithms exploit the features of superposition and entanglement to optimize a cost function efficiently by manipulating the quantum states. They are suitable for noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers that recently became accessible to the worldwide research community. Here, we implement and demonstrate the numerical processes on the 5-qubit and 7-qubit quantum processors on the IBM Qiskit Runtime platform. We combine the commercial finite-element-method (FEM) software ABAQUS with the implementation of Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) to establish an integrated pipeline. Three examples are used to investigate the performance: a hexagonal truss, a Timoshenko beam, and a plane-strain continuum. We conduct parametric studies on the convergence of fundamental natural frequency estimation using this hybrid quantum-classical approach. Our findings can be extended to problems with many more degrees of freedom when quantum computers with hundreds of qubits become available in the near future.

Fractal Patterns in the Parameter Space of Bi-stable Duffing Oscillator

We study the dissipative bi-stable Duffing oscillator with equal energy wells and observe fractal patterns in the parameter space of driving frequency, forcing amplitude, and damping ratio. Our numerical investigation reveals the Hausdorff fractal dimension of the boundaries that separate the oscillator's intra-well and inter-well behaviors. Furthermore, we categorize the inter-well behaviors as three steady-state types: switching, reverting, and vacillating. While fractal patterns in the phase space are well-known and heavily studied, our results point to a new research direction about fractal patterns in the parameter space. Another implication of this study is that the vibration of a continuous bi-stable system modeled using a single-mode approximation also manifests fractal patterns in the parameter space. In addition, our findings can guide the design of next-generation bi-stable and multi-stable mechanical metamaterials.

Non-Local Phononic Crystals for Dispersion Customization and Undulation-point Dynamics

Dispersion relations govern wave behaviors, and tailoring them is a grand challenge in wave manipulation. We demonstrate inverse design of phononic dispersion using non-local interactions on one-dimensional spring-mass chains. For both single-band and double-band cases, we can achieve any valid dispersion curves with analytical precision. We further employ our method to design phononic crystals with multiple ordinary (roton/maxon) and higher-order (undulation) critical points and investigate their wave packet dynamics.

Inerter-based Elastic Metamaterials for Band Gap at Extremely Low Frequency

We reveal the unique and fundamental advantage of inerter-based elastic metamaterials by a comparative study among different configurations. When the embedded inerter is connected to the matrix material on both ends, the metamaterial shows definite superiority in forming a band gap in the ultra-low frequency -- equivalently the ultra-long wavelength -- regime, where the unit cell size can be four or more orders of magnitude smaller than the operating wavelength. In addition, our parametric studies in both one and two dimensions pave the way towards designing next-generation metamaterials for structural vibration mitigation.

Rolling Waves with Non-Paraxial Phonon Spins

We demonstrate a new class of elastic waves in the bulk: When longitudinal and transverse components propagate at the same speed, rolling waves with a spin that is not parallel to the wave vector can emerge. First, we give a general definition of spin for traveling waves. Then, since rolling waves cannot exist in isotropic solids, we derive conditions for anisotropic media and proceed to design architected materials capable of hosting rolling waves. Numerically, we show spin manipulations by reflection. Structures reported in this work can be fabricated using available techniques, opening new possibilities for spin technologies in acoustics, mechanics and phononics.

Harnessing Geometric Frustration to Form Band Gaps in Acoustic Channel Lattices

We demonstrate both numerically and experimentally that geometric frustration in two-dimensional periodic acoustic networks consisting of arrays of narrow air channels can be harnessed to form band gaps (ranges of frequency in which the waves cannot propagate in any direction through the system). While resonant standing wave modes and interferences are ubiquitous in all the analyzed network geometries, we show that they give rise to band gaps only in the geometrically frustrated ones (i.e. those comprising of triangles and pentagons). Our results not only reveal a new mechanism based on geometric frustration to suppress the propagation of pressure waves in specific frequency ranges, but also opens avenues for the design of a new generation of smart systems that control and manipulate sound and vibrations.

Topological Phononic Crystals with One-Way Elastic Edge Waves

We report a new type of phononic crystals with topologically non-trivial bandgaps for both longitudinal and transverse polarizations, resulting in protected one-way elastic edge waves. In our design, gyroscopic inertial effects are used to break the time-reversal symmetry and realize the phononic analogue of the electronic quantum Hall effect. We investigate the response of both hexagonal and square gyroscopic lattices and observe bulk Chern number of 1 and 2, indicating that these structures support single and multi-mode edge elastic waves immune to back-scattering. These robust one-way phononic waveguides could potentially lead to the design of a novel class of surface wave devices that are widely used in electronics, telecommunication and acoustic imaging.
