Scalar sector properties of two-Higgs-doublet models with a global U(1) symmetry

We analyze the scalar sector properties of a general class of two-Higgs-doublet models which has a global U(1) symmetry in the quartic terms. We find constraints on the parameters of the potential from the considerations of unitarity of scattering amplitudes, the global stability of the potential and the $ρ$-parameter. We concentrate on the spectrum of the non-standard scalar masses in the decoupling limit which is preferred by the Higgs data at the LHC. We exhibit charged-Higgs induced contributions to the diphoton decay width of the 125\,GeV Higgs boson and its correlation with the corresponding $Zγ$ width.

Number of fermion generations from a novel Grand Unified model

Electroweak interactions based on a gauge group $\rm SU(3)_L \times U(1)_X$, coupled to the QCD gauge group $\rm SU(3)_c$, can predict the number of generations to be multiples of three. We first try to unify these models within SU(N) groups, using antisymmetric tensor representations only. After examining why these attempts fail, we continue to search for an SU(N) GUT that can explain the number of fermion generations. We show that such a model can be found for $N=9$, with fermions in antisymmetric rank-1 and rank-3 representations only, and examine the constraints on various masses in the model coming from the requirement of unification.

Modified Higgs couplings and unitarity violation

Prompted by the recent observation of a Higgs-like particle at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we investigate a quantitative correlation between possible departures of the gauge and Yukawa couplings of this particle from their Standard Model expectations and the scale of unitarity violation in the processes $WW \to WW$ and $t\bar t \to WW$.

Lepton number violating effects in neutrino oscillations

We develop a non-adiabatic perturbation theory for oscillations involving an arbitrary number of neutrino and antineutrino species, including the possibility of lepton number violation which we treat as a small effect. We interpret the physics of such an approach for the one generation case by introducing the notion of adiabaticity for neutrino and antineutrino oscillations in analogy to flavor oscillations. We find that in a CP-odd matter environment a small lepton number violation in vacuo can be enhanced. Eventually, we apply the perturbation theory to the two generation case and work out an example for manifestations of lepton number violation, which can be solved both perturbatively as well as analytically thereby further clarifying the nature of the perturbation expansion.

CPT-violating effects in muon decay

We consider low-energy CPT-violating modifications in charged current weak interactions and analyze possible ramifications in muon and antimuon decays. We calculate the lifetime of muon and antimuon with these modifications, and from the result, put bounds on the CPT-violating parameters. Moreover, we elaborate on the muon and antimuon decay rate differentials in electron energy and spatial angle, which entail interesting phenomenological consequences presenting new ways to constrain CPT violation in charged lepton decays.

Dirac, Majorana and Weyl fermions

This is a pedagogical article which discusses various kinds of fermion fields: Dirac, Majorana and Weyl. The definitions and motivations for introducing each kind of fields is discussed, along with the connections between them. It is pointed out that these definitions have to do with the proper Lorentz group, and not with respect to any discrete symmetry. The relationship of discrete symmetries like charge conjugation and CP, particularly important for Majorana fermions, has also been clarified.

A reappraisal of spontaneous R-parity violation

In this short reappraisal of spontaneous lepton number violation in a supersymmetric scenario implemented through singlet sneutrino vacuum expectation value (VEV), we contribute with two new things in the context where the lepton number symmetry is global: (i) provide explicit expressions of $R$-parity violating couplings in terms of the neutrino Yukawa couplings and the singlet sneutrino VEV, and (ii) estimate the limit on this VEV using the current knowledge of the light neutrino mass and the astrophysical constraint on the Majoron-electron coupling. Besides, we put updated constraints on the VEV and Yukawa coupling of the singlet superfield when lepton number is gauged.

At the root of things

Modern theories of fundamental interactions describe strong, electromagnetic and weak interactions as quantum field theories with certain kinds of embedded internal symmetries called `gauge symmetries'. This article introduces quantum field theories and gauge symmetries to the uninitiated.

Angular momentum non-conserving decays in isotropic media

Various processes that are forbidden in the vacuum due to angular momentum conservation can occur in a medium that is isotropic and does not carry any angular momentum. We illustrate this by considering explicitly two examples. The first one is the decay of a spin-0 particle into a photon and another spin-0 particle, using a model involving the Yukawa interactions of the scalar particles with a charged fermion field. The second one involves the decay of a neutrino into another neutrino and a graviton, in the standard model of particle interactions augmented with the linearized gravitational couplings.

Lorentz-symmetry violating decays in a medium

Various decay processes, such as the decay of a spin-1 particle into two photons or the gravitational decay of a spin-1/2 fermion, are forbidden in the vacuum by a combination of requirements, including angular momentum conservation, Lorentz invariance and gauge invariance. We show that such processes can occur in a medium, such as a thermal background of particles, even if it is homogeneous and isotropic. We carry out a model-independent analysis of the vertex function for such processes in terms of a set of form factors, and show that the amplitude can be non-zero while remaining consistent with the symmetry principles mentioned above. The results simulate Lorentz symmetry violating effects, although in this case they arise from completely Lorentz-invariant physics.

Radiative neutrino decay and CP-violation in R-parity violating supersymmetry

We calculate the radiative decay amplitude for Majorana neutrinos in trilinear R-parity violating supersymmetric framework. Our results make no assumption regarding the masses and mixings of fermions and sfermions. The results obtained are exemplary for generic models with loop-generated neutrino masses. Comparison of this amplitude with the neutrino mass matrix shows that the two provide independent probes of CP-violating phases.

The road not considered ... the question of photon mass

We consider possibilities of modification of Maxwell's equations of electrodynamics that could have automatically led to a massive photon. Why weren't such questions considered at the time when quantum theory was introduced at the beginning of the 20th century? We try to answer this question.

Perturbative vs Schwinger-propagator method for the calculation of amplitudes in a magnetic field

We consider the calculation of amplitudes for processes that take place in a constant background magnetic field, first using the standard method for the calculation of an amplitude in an external field, and second utilizing the Schwinger propagator for charged particles in a magnetic field. We show that there are processes for which the Schwinger propagator method does not yield the total amplitude. We explain why the two methods yield equivalent results in some cases and indicate when we can expect the equivalence to hold. We show these results in fairly general terms and illustrate them with specific examples as well.

Gravitational decay of the Z-boson

We study the decay process of the Z boson to a photon and a graviton. The most general form of the on-shell amplitude, subject to the constraints due to the conservation of the electromagnetic and the energy-momentum tensor, is determined. The amplitude is expressed in terms of three form factors, two of which are CP-odd while one is CP-even. The latter, which is the only non-zero form factor at the one-loop level, is computed in the standard model and the decay rate is determined.
