Emergent Quantum Valley Hall Insulator from Electron Interactions in Transition-Metal Dichalcogenide Heterobilayers

We explore the emergence of topological phases in moir\'{e} MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$ bilayer, highlighting the crucial role of spin-orbit coupling and Coulomb interactions at two holes per moir\'e unit cell \(v = 2\). Our analysis uncovers robust Quantum Valley Hall Insulating (QVHI) phase and reveals that long-range interactions alone can mediate the interlayer electron tunneling, generating topologically nontrivial bands even in the absence of the corresponding single-particle hopping. Additionally, we show that in the case of band mixing terms originating both from the interaction and single particle physics a competition between topological states realizing $s$-$wave$ and $p\pm ip$-$wave$ symmetries can appear. Moreover, within the considered theoretical framework, we present that by introducing a small Zeeman field, one can lift the band inversion in one of the valleys. This leads to a Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulating (QAHI) state with the topological gap opening in a single valley and the other being topologically trivial.

Interplay between topology and electron-electron interactions in the moir\'{e} MoTe$_{\mathrm{2}}$/WSe$_{\mathrm{2}}$ heterobilayer

We study, the interplay between topology and electron-electron interactions in the moir\'{e} MoTe\(_2\)/WSe\(_2\) heterobilayer. In our analysis we apply an effective two-band model with complex hoppings that incorporates the Ising-type spin-orbit coupling and lead to a non-trivial topology after the application of perpendicular electric field (displacement field). The model is supplemented by on-site and inter-site Coulomb repulsion terms and treated by both Hartree-Fock and Gutzwiller methods. According to our analysis, for the case of one hole per moir\'{e} unit cell, the system undergoes two phase transitions with increasing displacement field. The first one is from an in-plane 120$^\circ$ antiferromagnetic charge transfer insulator to a topological insulator. At the second transition, the system becomes topologically trivial and an out-of-plane ferrimagnetic metallic phase becomes stable. In the topological region a spontaneous spin-polarization appears and the holes are distributed in both layers. Additionally, we analyze the influence of the intersite Coulomb repulsion terms on the appearance of the topological phase as well as on the formation of the charge density wave state. We discuss the obtained results in the context of available experimental data.

Unconventional optical response in monolayer graphene upon dominant intraband scattering

Scattering dynamics influence the graphenes transport properties and inhibits the charge carrier deterministic behaviour. The intra or inter-band scattering mechanisms are vital for graphenes optical conductivity response under specific considerations of doping. Here, we investigated the influence of scattering systematically on optical conductivity using a semi-classical multiband Boltzmann equation with inclusion of both electron-electron $\&$ electron-phonon collisions. We found unconventional characteristics of linear optical response with a significant deviation from the universal conductivity $\frac{e^2}{4\hbar}$ in doped monolayer graphene. This is explained through phenomenological relaxation rates under low doping regime with dominant intraband scattering. Such novel optical responses are vanished at high temperatures or overdoping conditions due to strong Drude behaviour. With the aid of approximations around Dirac points we have developed analytical formalism for many body interactions and is in good agreement with the Kubo approaches.
