Dissipation and criticality in the lowest Landau level of graphene

The lowest Landau level of graphene is studied numerically by considering a tight-binding Hamiltonian with disorder. The Hall conductance $σ_\mathrm{xy}$ and the longitudinal conductance $σ_\mathrm{xx}$ are computed. We demonstrate that bond disorder can produce a plateau-like feature centered at $ν=0$, while the longitudinal conductance is nonzero in the same region, reflecting a band of extended states between $\pm E_{c}$, whose magnitude depends on the disorder strength. The critical exponent corresponding to the localization length at the edges of this band is found to be $2.47\pm 0.04$. When both bond disorder and a finite mass term exist the localization length exponent varies continuously between $\sim 1.0$ and $\sim 7/3$.

Rounding by disorder of first-order quantum phase transitions: emergence of quantum critical points

We give a heuristic argument for disorder rounding of a first order quantum phase transition into a continuous phase transition. From both weak and strong disorder analysis of the the N-color quantum Ashkin-Teller model in one spatial dimension, we find that for $N \geq 3$, the first order transition is rounded to a continuous transition and the physical picture is the same as the random transverse field Ising model for a limited parameter regime. The results are strikingly different from the corresponding classical problem in two dimensions where the fate of the renormalization group flows is a fixed point corresponding to N-decoupled pure Ising models.

Quantum Hall plateau transition in the lowest Landau level of disordered graphene

We investigate, analytically and numerically, the effects of disorder on the density of states and on the localization properties of the relativistic two dimensional fermions in the lowest Landau level. Employing a supersymmetric technique, we calculate the exact density of states for the Cauchy (Lorentzian) distribution for various types of disorders. We use a numerical technique to establish the localization-delocalization (LD) transition in the lowest Landau level. For some types of disorder the LD transition is shown to belong to a different universality class, as compared to the corresponding nonrelativistic problem. The results are relevant to the integer quantum Hall plateau transitions observed in graphene.

Diamagnetism of nodal fermions

Free nodal fermionic excitations are simple but interesting examples of fermionic quantum criticality in which the dynamic critical exponent $z=1$, and the quasiparticles are well defined. They arise in a number of physical contexts. We derive the scaling form of the diamagnetic susceptibility, $χ$, at finite temperatures and for finite chemical potential. From measurements in graphene, or in $\mathrm{Bi_{1-x}Sb_{x}}$ ($x=0.04$), one may be able to infer the striking Landau diamagnetic susceptibility of the system at the quantum critical point. Although the quasiparticles in the mean field description of the proposed $d$-density wave (DDW) condensate in high temperature superconductors is another example of nodal quasiparticles, the crossover from the high temperature behavior to the quantum critical behavior takes place at a far lower temperature due to the reduction of the velocity scale from the fermi velocity $v_{F}$ in graphene to $\sqrt{v_{F}v_{\mathrm{DDW}}}$, where $v_{\mathrm{DDW}}$ is the velocity in the direction orthogonal to the nodal direction at the Fermi point of the spectra of the DDW condensate.

Dissipation, topology, and quantum phase transition in a one-dimensional Joesphson junction array

We study the phase diagram and quantum critical properties of a resistively shunted Josephson junction array in one dimension from a strong coupling analysis. After mapping the dissipative quantum phase model to an effective sine-Gordon model we study the renormalization group flow and the phase diagram. We try to bridge the phase diagrams obtained from the weak and the strong coupling renormalization group calculations to extract a more comprehensive picture of the complete phase diagram. The relevance of our theory to experiments in nanowires is discussed.

Photoemission From A Two Electron Quantum Dot

We consider photoemission from a two-electron quantum dot and find analytic expression for the cross-section. We show that the emission cross-section from the ground state as a function of magnetic field has sharp discontinuities corresponding to the singlet-triplet transitions for low magnetic fields and the transitions between magic numbers (2J+1) for high magnetic field. We also find the corrections to the photoemission cross-section from a more realistic quantum dot having a finite thickness due to nonvanishing extent of electron wave function in the direction perpendicular to the plane in which 2-D dot electrons are usually confined.

Two Electron Quantum Dot - A Variational Treatment For The Ground State

A variational treatment for a two-electron quantum dot (the artificial helium atom) is proposed which leads to exact answer for the ground state energy. Depending on the magnetic field value the singlet-triplet and triplet-triplet transitions of the ground state take place, which are captured in our solution. Using the same variational technique we find corrections to wave function and energy and the transition field strengths in a realistic dot where electron wave function has a finite extent in the direction perpendicular to the x-y plane in which usually 2-D dot electrons are confined. Using the variational wave function we show that photoemission cross-section as a function of magnetic field has sharp discontinuities, which can be used for experimental verification of the singlet-triplet transitions.
