Global symmetries, hidden sectors and emergent (dark) vector interactions

Hidden theories coupled to the SM may provide emergent (dark) vectors, that are composites/bound-states of the hidden fields. This is motivated by paradigms emerging from the AdS/CFT correspondence but it is a more general phenomenon. We explore the general setup and find that UV interactions among currents or charged fields give rise to emergent vectors in the IR. We study the general properties of such vectors and argue that they can be generically different from fundamental dark photons that have been studied so far.

Liouville theory and Matrix models: A Wheeler DeWitt perspective

We analyse the connections between the Wheeler DeWitt approach for two dimensional quantum gravity and holography, focusing mainly in the case of Liouville theory coupled to $c=1$ matter. Our motivation is to understand whether some form of averaging is essential for the boundary theory, if we wish to describe the bulk quantum gravity path integral of this two dimensional example. The analysis hence, is in a spirit similar to the recent studies of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT)-gravity. Macroscopic loop operators define the asymptotic region on which the holographic boundary dual resides. Matrix quantum mechanics (MQM) and the associated double scaled fermionic field theory on the contrary, is providing an explicit "unitary in superspace" description of the complete dynamics of such two dimensional universes with matter, including the effects of topology change. If we try to associate a Hilbert space to a single boundary dual, it seems that it cannot contain all the information present in the non-perturbative bulk quantum gravity path integral and MQM.

Brane Cosmology and the self-tuning of the cosmological constant in the presence of bulk black holes

Motivated by the holographic self-tuning proposal of the cosmological constant, we generalize and study the cosmology of brane-worlds embedded in a higher-dimensional bulk black hole geometry. We describe the equations and matching conditions in the case of flat, spherical and hyperbolic slicing of the bulk geometry and find the conditions for the existence of a static solution. We solve the equations that govern dynamical geometries in the probe brane limit and we describe in detail the resulting brane-world cosmologies. Of particular interest are the properties of solutions when the brane-world approaches the black hole horizon. In this case the geometry induced on the brane is that of de Sitter, whose entropy and temperature is related to those of the higher dimensional bulk black hole.

The Black Hole S-Matrix from Quantum Mechanics

We revisit the old black hole S-Matrix construction and its new partial wave expansion of 't Hooft. Inspired by old ideas from non-critical string theory & $c=1$ Matrix Quantum Mechanics, we reformulate the scattering in terms of a quantum mechanical model\textemdash of waves scattering off inverted harmonic oscillator potentials\textemdash that exactly reproduces the unitary black hole S-Matrix for all spherical harmonics; each partial wave corresponds to an inverted harmonic oscillator with ground state energy that is shifted relative to the s-wave oscillator. Identifying a connection to 2d string theory allows us to show that there is an exponential degeneracy in how a given total initial energy may be distributed among many partial waves of the 4d black hole.

Emergent/Composite axions

Hidden theories coupled to the SM may provide emergent axions, that are composites/bound-states of the hidden fields. This is motivated by paradigms emerging from the AdS/CFT correspondence but it is a more general phenomenon. We explore the general setup and find that UV-sourced interactions of instanton densities give rise to emergent axions in the IR. We study the general properties of such axions and argue that they are generically different from both fundamental and composite axions that have been studied so far.

Fluctuations in non-conformal holographic plasma at criticality

We continue the study initiated in [arXiv:1708.02252] of the fluctuations of a strongly-coupled non-conformal plasma described holographically by Einstein gravity coupled to a dilaton with an exponential potential. The plasma approaches a critical point of a continuous phase transition in a specific limit, where the metric becomes a linear-dilaton background. This results to an analytic description of the quasi-normal mode spectrum, that can be extended perturbatively in the deviation away from the critical point. In the previous paper we showed that at criticality the quasinormal frequencies coalesce into a branch cut on the real axis. In this paper we give a more extended and complete discussion of these results. We compare in detail the numerical and analytical approximations in order to confirm their validity; we study (numerically and in a WKB approximation) the momentum dependence of the modes, in order to determine the cross-over scale that limits the validity of the hydrodynamic approximation, and which becomes arbitrarily low at the critical point; and we discuss in detail the procedure we use to complete the theory in the UV by gluing a slice of AdS geometry, and the extent to which it should provide a good approximation to a smooth UV-complete situation.

Antipodal correlation on the meron wormhole and a bang-crunch universe

We present a covariant euclidean wormhole solution to Einstein Yang-Mills system and study scalar perturbations analytically. The fluctuation operator has a positive definite spectrum. We compute the Euclidean Green's function, which displays maximal antipodal correlation on the smallest three sphere. Upon analytic continuation, it corresponds to the Feynman propagator on a compact bang-crunch universe. We present the connection matrix that relates past and future modes. We thoroughly discuss the physical implications of the antipodal map in both the Euclidean and Lorentzian geometries.

Quasi-normal modes of a strongly coupled non-conformal plasma and approach to criticality

We study fluctuations around equilibrium in a class of strongly interacting non-conformal plasmas using holographic techniques. In particular we calculate the quasi-normal mode spectrum of black hole backgrounds that approach to Chamblin-Reall plasmas in the IR. In a specific limit, related to the exact linear-dilaton background in string theory, we observe that the plasma approaches criticality and we obtain the quasi-normal spectrum analytically. We regulate the critical limit by gluing the IR geometry that corresponds to the non-conformal plasma to a part of AdS space-time in the UV. Near criticality, we find two sets of quasi-normal modes, related to the IR and UV parts of the geometry. In the critical limit, the quasi-normal modes accumulate to form a branch cut in the correlators of the energy-momentum tensor on the real axis of the complex frequency plane.

Matrix Quantum Mechanics on $S^{1}/{\mathbb Z}_{2}$

We study Matrix Quantum Mechanics on the Euclidean time orbifold $S_1/\mathbb{Z}_2$. Upon Wick rotation to Lorentzian time and taking the double-scaling limit this theory provides a toy model for a big-bang/big crunch universe in two dimensional non-critical string theory where the orbifold fixed points become cosmological singularities. We derive the MQM partition function both in the canonical and grand canonical ensemble in two different formulations and demonstrate agreement between them. We pinpoint the contribution of twisted states in both of these formulations either in terms of bi-local operators acting at the end-points of time or branch-cuts on the complex plane. We calculate, in the matrix model, the contribution of the twisted states to the torus level partition function explicitly and show that it precisely matches the world-sheet result, providing a non-trivial test of the proposed duality. Finally we discuss some interesting features of the partition function and the possibility of realising it as a $τ$-function of an integrable hierarchy.

Electromagnetic response of interacting Weyl semimetals

We study the electromagnetic properties of Weyl semimetals with strong interactions. Focusing on a single Weyl cone in the band structure, we induce strong interactions by coupling the Weyl fermion with a tunable coupling constant $g_f$ to a quantum critical system. The critical fluctuations are described by a conformal field theory containing fermionic operators with scaling dimension $Δ$. Employing the methods of the holographic correspondence, we then derive the effective theory of the Weyl fermion in the presence of external electric and magnetic fields. In particular, we determine the frequency and momentum-dependent anomalous magnetic moment of the Weyl fermions. We also determine the conductivity of the Weyl semimetal including the vertex corrections consistent with the Ward identity. Finally, we connect our construction to the case of Coulomb interactions in Weyl semimetals by tuning the parameters $Δ\rightarrow 5/2$ and $g_f^2 \rightarrow e/\sqrt{\hbar cε_0$.
