Spin- and Momentum-Correlated Atom Pairs Mediated by Photon Exchange and Seeded by Vacuum Fluctuations

Engineering pairs of massive particles that are simultaneously correlated in their external and internal degrees of freedom is a major challenge, yet essential for advancing fundamental tests of physics and quantum technologies. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate a mechanism for generating pairs of atoms in well-defined spin and momentum modes. This mechanism couples atoms from a degenerate Bose gas via a superradiant photon-exchange process in an optical cavity, producing pairs via a single channel or two discernible channels. The scheme is independent of collisional interactions, fast and tunable. We observe a collectively enhanced production of pairs and probe interspin correlations in momentum space. We characterize the emergent pair statistics and find that the observed dynamics is consistent with being primarily seeded by vacuum fluctuations in the corresponding atomic modes. Together with our observations of coherent many-body oscillations involving well-defined momentum modes, our results offer promising prospects for quantum-enhanced interferometry and quantum simulation experiments using entangled matter waves.

Emergence of isotropy and dynamic scaling in 2D wave turbulence in a homogeneous Bose gas

We realise a turbulent cascade of wave excitations in a homogeneous 2D Bose gas, and probe on all relevant time and length scales how it builds up from small to large momenta, until the system reaches a steady state with matching energy injection and dissipation. This all-scales view directly reveals the two theoretically expected cornerstones of turbulence formation -- the emergence of statistical momentum-space isotropy under anisotropic forcing, and the spatiotemporal scaling of the momentum distribution at times before any energy is dissipated.

Observation of first and second sound in a BKT superfluid

Superfluidity in its various forms has fascinated scientists since the observation of frictionless flow in liquid helium II. In three spatial dimensions (3D), it is conceptually associated with the emergence of long-range order (LRO) at a critical temperature $T_{\text{c}}$. One of its hallmarks, predicted by the highly successful two-fluid model and observed in both liquid helium and ultracold atomic gases, is the existence of two kinds of sound excitations, the first and second sound. In 2D systems, thermal fluctuations preclude LRO, but superfluidity nevertheless emerges at a nonzero $T_{\text{c}}$ via the infinite-order Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, which is associated with a universal jump in the superfluid density $n_{\text{s}}$ without any discontinuities in the fluid's thermodynamic properties. BKT superfluids are also predicted to support two sounds, but the observation of this has remained elusive. Here we observe first and second sound in a homogeneous 2D atomic Bose gas, and from the two temperature-dependent sound speeds extract its superfluid density. Our results agree with BKT theory, including the prediction for the universal superfluid-density jump.

Local risk-minimization with multiple assets under illiquidity with applications in energy markets

We propose a hedging approach for general contingent claims when liquidity is a concern and trading is subject to transaction cost. Multiple assets with different liquidity levels are available for hedging. Our risk criterion targets a tradeoff between minimizing the risk against fluctuations in the stock price and incurring low liquidity costs. Following Çetin U., Jarrow R.A., and Protter P. (2004) we work in an arbitrage-free setting assuming a supply curve for each asset. In discrete time, following the ideas in Schweizer M. (1998) and Lamberton D., Pham H., Schweizer M. (1998) we prove the existence of a locally risk-minimizing strategy under mild conditions on the price process. Under stochastic and time-dependent liquidity risk we give a closed-form solution for an optimal strategy in the case of a linear supply curve model. Finally we show how our hedging method can be applied in energy markets where futures with different maturities are available for trading. The futures closest to their delivery period are usually the most liquid but depending on the contingent claim not necessary optimal in terms of hedging. In a simulation study we investigate this tradeoff and compare the resulting hedge strategies with the classical ones.

Elliptic flow in a strongly-interacting normal Bose gas

We study the anisotropic, elliptic expansion of a thermal atomic Bose gas released from an anisotropic trapping potential, for a wide range of interaction strengths across a Feshbach resonance. We show that in our system this hydrodynamic phenomenon is for all interaction strengths fully described by a microscopic kinetic model with no free parameters. The success of this description crucially relies on taking into account the reduced thermalising power of elastic collisions in a strongly interacting gas, for which we derive an analytical theory. We also perform time-resolved measurements that directly reveal the dynamics of the energy transfer between the different expansion axes.
