Classification of engineered topological superconductors

I perform a complete classification of 2d, quasi-1d and 1d topological superconductors which originate from the suitable combination of inhomogeneous Rashba spin-orbit coupling, magnetism and superconductivity. My analysis reveals alternative types of topological superconducting platforms for which Majorana fermions are accessible. Specifically, I observe that for quasi-1d systems with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and time-reversal violating superconductivity, as for instance due to a finite Josephson current flow, Majorana fermions can emerge even in the absence of magnetism. Furthermore, for the classification I also consider situations where additional "hidden" symmetries emerge, with a significant impact on the topological properties of the system. The latter, generally originate from a combination of space group and complex conjugation operations that separately do not leave the Hamiltonian invariant. Finally, I suggest alternative directions in topological quantum computing for systems with additional unitary symmetries.

Engineering and manipulating topological qubits in 1D quantum wires

We investigate the Josephson effect in TNT and NTN junctions, consisting of topological (T) and normal (N) phases of semiconductor-superconductor 1D heterostructures in the presence of a Zeeman field. A key feature of our setup is that, in addition to the variation of the phase of the superconducting order parameter, we allow the orientation of the magnetic field to change along the junction. We find a novel magnetic contribution to the Majorana Josephson coupling that permits the Josephson current to be tuned by changing the orientation of the magnetic field along the junction. We also predict that a spin current can be generated by a finite superconducting phase difference, rendering these materials potential candidates for spintronic applications. Finally, this new type of coupling not only constitutes a unique fingerprint for the existence of Majorana bound states but also provides an alternative pathway for manipulating and braiding topological qubits in networks of wires.

Holographic Charge Density Waves

We discuss a gravity dual of a charge density wave consisting of a U(1) gauge field and two scalar fields in the background of an AdS$_4$ Schwarzschild black hole together with an antisymmetric field (probe limit). Interactions drive the system to a phase transition below a critical temperature. We numerically compute the ground states characterized by modulated solutions for the gauge potential corresponding to a dynamically generated unidirectional charge density wave in the conformal field theory. Signatures of the holographic density waves are retrieved by studying the dynamical response to an external electric field. We find that this novel holographic state shares many common features with the standard condensed matter version of charge density wave systems.

Chirality Induced Tilted-Hill Giant Nernst Signal

We reveal a novel source of giant Nernst response exhibiting strong non-linear temperature and magnetic field dependence including the mysterious tilted-hill temperature profile observed in a pleiad of materials. The phenomenon results directly from the formation of a chiral ground state, e.g. a chiral d-density wave, which is compatible with the eventual observation of diamagnetism and is distinctly different from the usual quasiparticle and vortex Nernst mechanisms. Our picture provides a unified understanding of the anomalous thermoelectricity observed in materials as diverse as hole doped cuprates and heavy-fermion compounds like URu2Si2.

Magnetic field induced chiral particle-hole condensates

We demonstrate that a chiral particle-hole condensate is always induced by a number-conserving ground state of non-zero angular momentum in the presence of a magnetic field. The magnetic interaction originates from the coupling with the intrinsic orbital moment of the chiral state when the field is applied perpendicularly to the plane. According to our numerical results the induction mechanism is practically temperature independent providing robustness to these states up to high temperatures. This opens the door for manipulating the anomalous Hall response resulting from this intricate class of states for technological applications while it also suggests that chiral particle-hole condensates may be hidden in various complex materials.

Berry phase and topological spin transport in the chiral d-density wave state

In this paper we demonstrate the possibility of dissipationless spin transport in the chiral d-density wave state, by the sole application of a uniform Zeeman field gradient. The occurrence of these spontaneous spin currents is attributed to the parity (${\cal P}$) and time-reversal (${\cal T}$) violation induced by the $d_{xy}+id_{x^2-y^2}$ density wave order parameter. We calculate the spin Hall conductance and reveal its intimate relation to the Berry phase which is generated when the Zeeman field is applied adiabatically. Finally, we demonstrate that in the zero temperature and doping case, the spin Hall conductance is quantized as it becomes a topological invariant.
