Leptoquark Contribution to the Higgs Boson Production at the LHC Collider

In this report we study how a light-scalar leptoquark could affect the Higgs boson production cross-section at the LHC collider. We construct the most general renormalizable and gauge invariant effective Lagrangian involving the standard model particles and a scalar, isoscalar leptoquark, η. The total cross-section for pp -> H+X is then calculated for different values of the unknown parameters λ_eta, m_eta and m_H.(Here λ_eta is the coupling associated with the Higgs-leptoquark interaction.) We find that if λ_eta is moderately large and m_eta is around a few hundred GeV, then the cross-section is significantly larger than the standard model value.

More Signatures of the Intermediate Mass Higgs Boson

We examine the potential signatures of the Higgs boson when it decays into a tau-lepton pair. We show that with the proper identification of the tau-jet, this decay mode can lead to the identification of the Higgs boson over most of the intermediate mass range (\mW $<$ \mH $<$ 2 \mW).

Leptoproduction of Heavy Quarks

There are presently two approaches to calculating heavy quark production for the deeply inelastic scattering process in current literature. The conventional fixed-flavor scheme focuses on the flavor creation mechanism and includes the heavy quark only as a final state particle in the hard scattering cross section; this has been computed to next-to-leading order--\alphas^2. The more recently formulated variable-flavor scheme includes, in addition, the flavor excitation process where the initial state partons of all flavors contribute above their respective threshold, as commonly accepted for calculations of other high energy processes; this was initially carried out to leading order--\alphas^1. We first compare and contrast these existing calculations. As expected from physical grounds, the next-to-leading-order fixed-flavor scheme calculation yields good results near threshold, while the leading-order variable-flavor scheme calculation works well for asymptotic Q^2. The quality of the calculations in the intermediate region is dependent upon the x and Q^2 values chosen. An accurate self-consistent QCD calculation over the entire range can be obtained by extending the variable-flavor scheme to next-to-leading-order. Recent work to carry out this calculation is described. Preliminary numerical results of this calculation are also presented for comparison.

Detecting the Intermediate-Mass Neutral Higgs Boson at the LHC Through $pp \to W H$

We examine the exclusive signature $pp \to WH \to \ell ν\;b \bar b$ at the LHC. Although the backgrounds, principally arising from top production and $Wjj$, are quite severe, it is shown that judicious application of phase-space cuts and the use of $b$-tagging can in fact greatly enhance the detectability of this channel. Signature of the Intermediate Mass Higgs Boson at the LHC With Flavor Tagging

We revisit the exclusive signature $e^\pm (μ^\pm) + b\bar b$ in the associated production of the intermediate mass Higgs boson with a $W$ boson. We show that it is feasible to use this signature to identify the Higgs boson in the lower intermediate mass region ($90$ to $130$ GeV) at the LHC with reasonable acceptance cuts by assuming effective bottom-jet identification. We further demonstrate that the background can be reduced with judicious cuts down to the level of the signal.
