Circumventing Astrophysical Bounds Upon PVLAS Experiment

We study the possibility of evading astrophysical bound on light pseudoscalars. We argue that the solar bounds can be evaded if we have a sufficiently strong self-coupling of the pseudoscalars. The required coupling does not conflict with any known experimental bounds. We also show that it is possible to find a coupling range such that the recent PVLAS experiment is not in conflict with any astrophysical bounds.

Photon & Axion Oscillation In a Magnetized Medium: A Covariant Treatment

Pseudoscalar particles, with almost zero mass and very weak coupling to the visible matter, arise in many extensions of the standard model of particle physics. Their mixing with photons in the presence of an external magnetic field leads to many interesting astrophysical and cosmological consequences. This mixing depends on the medium properties, the momentum of the photon and the background magnetic field. Here we give a general treatment of pseudoscalar-photon oscillations in a background magnetic field, taking the Faraday term into account. We give predictions valid in all regimes, under the assumption that the frequency of the wave is much higher than the plasma frequency of the medium. At sufficiently high frequencies, the Faraday effect is negligible and we reproduce the standard pseudoscalar-photon mixing phenomenon. However at low frequencies, where Faraday effect is important, the mixing formulae are considerably modified. We explicitly compute the contribution due to the longitudinal mode of the photon and show that it is negligible.

Dark Energy and Dark Matter in General Relativity with local scale invariance

We consider a generalization of Einstein's general theory of relativity such that it respects local scale invariance. This requires the introduction of a scalar and a vector field in the action. We show that the theory naturally displays both dark energy and dark matter. We solve the resulting equations of motion assuming an FRW metric. The solutions are found to be almost identical to those corresponding to the standard $Λ$CDM model

Signatures of Pseudoscalar Photon Mixing in CMB Radiation

We model the effect of photon and ultra-light pseudoscalar mixing on the propagation of electromagnetic radiation through the extragalactic medium. The medium is modelled as a large number of magnetic domains, uncorrelated with one another. We obtain an analytic expression for the different Stokes parameters in the limit of small mixing angle. The different Stokes parameters are found to increase linearly with the number of domains. We also verify this result by direct numerical simulations. We use this formalism to estimate the effect of pseudoscalar-photon mixing on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization. We impose limits on the model parameters by the CMB observations. We find that the currently allowed parameter range admits a CMB circular polarization up to order $10^{-7}$.

Two Photon Exchange Contributions to Elastic e + p --> e + p Process in a Nonlocal Field Formalism

We compute the two photon exchange contributions to elastic scattering of polarized electrons from target protons. We use a nonlocal field theory formalism for this calculation. The formalism maintains gauge invariance and provides a systematic procedure for making this calculation. The results depend on one unknown parameter \bar b. We compute the two photon exchange correction to the ratio of electric to magnetic form factors extracted using the polarization transfer experiments. The correction is found to be small if \bar b ~ 1. However for larger values of \bar b>3, the correction can be quite significant. The correction to the polarization transfer results goes in the right direction to explain their difference with the ratio measured by Rosenbluth separation method. We find that the difference between the two experimental results can be explained for a wide range of values of the parameter \bar b. We also find that the corrections due to two photon exchange depend on the photon longitudinal polarization epsilon. Hence we predict an epsilon dependence of the form factor ratio extracted using the polarization transfer technique. Finally we obtain a limit on \bar b by requiring that the non-linearity in epsilon dependence of the unpolarized reduced cross section is within experimental errors.

Cosmological Implications of a Scale Invariant Standard Model

We generalize the standard model of particle physics such it displays global scale invariance. The gravitational action is also suitably modified such that it respects this symmetry. This model is interesting since the cosmological constant term is absent in the action. We find that the scale symmetry is broken by the recently introduced cosmological symmetry breaking mechanism. This simultaneously generates all the dimensionful parameters such as the Newton's gravitational constant, the particle masses and the vacuum or dark energy. We find that in its simplest version the model predicts the Higgs mass to be very small, which is ruled out experimentally. We further generalize the model such that it displays local scale invariance. In this case the Higgs particle disappears from the particle spectrum and instead we find a very massive vector boson. Hence the model gives a consistent description of particle physics phenomenology as well as fits the cosmological dark energy.

Testing Isotropy of Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation

We introduce new symmetry-based methods to test for isotropy in cosmic microwave background radiation. Each angular multipole is factored into unique products of power eigenvectors, related multipoles and singular values that provide 2 new rotationally invariant measures mode by mode. The power entropy and directional entropy are new tests of randomness that are independent of the usual CMB power. Simulated galactic plane contamination is readily identified, and the new procedures mesh perfectly with linear transformations employed for windowed-sky analysis. The ILC -WMAP data maps show 7 axes well aligned with one another and the direction Virgo. Parameter free statistics find 12 independent cases of extraordinary axial alignment, low power entropy, or both having 5% probability or lower in an isotropic distribution. Isotropy of the ILC maps is ruled out to confidence levels of better than 99.9%, whether or not coincidences with other puzzles coming from the Virgo axis are included. Our work shows that anisotropy is not confined to the low l region, but extends over a much larger l range.

Probing Light Pseudoscalars with Light: Propagation, Resonance and Spontaneous Polarization

Radiation propagating over cosmological distances can probe light weakly interacting pseudoscalar (or scalar) particles. The existence of a spin-0 field changes the dynamical symmetries of electrodynamics. It predicts spontaneous generation of polarization of electromagnetic waves due to mode mixing in the presence of background magnetic field. We illustrate this by calculations of propagation in a uniform medium, as well as in a slowly varying background medium, and finally with resonant mixing. Highly complicated correlations between different Stokes parameters are predicted depending on the parameter regimes. The polarization of propagating waves shows interesting and complex dependence on frequency, the distance of propagation, coupling constants, and parameters of the background medium such as the plasma density and the magnetic field strength. For the first time we study the resonant mixing of electromagnetic waves with the scalar field, which occurs when the background plasma frequency becomes equal to the mass of the scalar field at some point along the path. Dynamical effects are found to be considerably enhanced in this case. We also formulate the condition under which the adiabatic approximation can be used consistently, and find caveats about comparing different frequency regimes.

CMB anisotropy power spectrum using linear combinations of WMAP maps

In recent years the goal of estimating different cosmological parameters precisely has set new challenges in the effort to accurately measure the angular power spectrum of CMB. This has required removal of foreground contamination as well as detector noise bias with reliability and precision. Recently, a novel {\em model-independent} method for the estimation of CMB angular power spectrum solely from multi-frequency observations has been proposed and implemented on the first year WMAP data by Saha et al. 2006. All previous estimates of power spectrum of CMB are based upon foreground templates using data sets from different experiments. However our methodology demonstrates that {\em CMB angular spectrum can be reliably estimated with precision from a self contained analysis of the WMAP data}. In this work we provide a detailed description of this method. We also study and identify the biases present in our power spectrum estimate. We apply our methodoly to extract the power spectrum from the WMAP 1 year and 3 year data.

Cosmological Symmetry Breaking, Pseudo-scale invariance, Dark Energy and the Standard Model

The energy density of the universe today may be dominated by the vacuum energy of a slowly rolling scalar field. Making a quantum expansion around such a time dependent solution is found to break fundamental symmetries of quantum field theory. We call this mechanism cosmological symmetry breaking and argue that it is different from the standard phenomenon of spontaneous symmetry breaking. We illustrate this with a toy scalar field theory, whose action displays a U(1) symmetry. We identify a symmetry, called pseudo-scale invariance, which sets the cosmological constant exactly equal to zero, both in classical and quantum theory. This symmetry is also broken cosmologically and leads to a nonzero vacuum or dark energy. The slow roll condition along with the observed value of dark energy leads to a value of the background scalar field of the order of Planck mass. We also consider a U(1) gauge symmetry model. Cosmological symmetry breaking, in this case, leads to a non zero mass for the vector field. We also show that a cosmologically broken pseudo-scale invariance can generate a wide range of masses.

Two Photon Exchange Contributions to Elastic ep Scattering in the Nonlocal Field Formalism

We construct a nonlocal gauge invariant Lagrangian to model the electromagnetic interaction of proton. The Lagrangian includes all allowed operators with dimension up to five. We compute the two photon exchange contribution to elastic electron-proton scattering using this effective nonlocal Lagrangian. The one loop calculation in this model includes the standard box and cross box diagram with the standard on-shell form of the hadron electromagnetic vertices. Besides this we find an extra contribution which depends on an unknown constant. We use experimentally extracted form factors for our calculation. We find that the correction to the reduced cross section is slightly nonlinear as a function of the photon longitudinal polarization $ε$. The non-linearity seen is within the experimental error bars of the Rosenbluth data. The final result completely explains the difference between the form factor ratio $G_E/G_M$ extracted by Rosenbluth separation technique at SLAC and polarization transfer technique at JLAB.

Self Interacting Dark Matter in the Solar System

Weakly coupled, almost massless, spin 0 particles have been predicted by many extensions of the standard model of particle physics. Recently, the PVLAS group observed a rotation of polarization of electromagnetic waves in vacuum in the presence of transverse magnetic field. This phenomenon is best explained by the existence of a weakly coupled light pseudoscalar particle. However, the coupling required by this experiment is much larger than the conventional astrophysical limits. Here we consider a hypothetical self-interacting pseudoscalar particle which couples weakly with visible matter. Assuming that these pseudoscalars pervade the galaxy, we show that the solar limits on the pseudoscalar-photon coupling can be evaded.

Search for Global Metric Anisotropy in Type Ia Supernova Data

We examine the Type 1a supernova data in order to determine if it shows any signal of large scale anisotropy. The anisotropy is modelled by an extended Gödel metric, which incorporates expansion along with rotation. The model is smoothly connected to the usual FRW type, while expressing anisotropic metric effects depending on certain parameters. We find no significant signal of anisotropy in the data. We obtain bounds on an anisotropic redshift versus magnitude relationship, and accompanying parameters of the Gödel-Obukhov metric.

Classifying Polarization Observables of the Cosmic Microwave Background

We revisit the classification of polarization observables of the cosmic microwave background. There exists a unified approach to the $3 \times 3$ density matrix by which intensity, linear and circular polarization are treated on an equal footing. The representations of the rotation group on the sphere contain certain right-left setup symmetries which have not been taken into account before. Left-right symmetries revise the construction of invariants and certain predictions based on symmetries. There are two true rotational invariants mode by mode in polarization data. Independent of models of cosmological perturbations, we emphasize methods to construct invariant distributions in order to test predictions of isotropy, axial or parity symmetries, and generate covariant and invariant statistics order by order.

Angular power spectrum of CMB anisotropy from WMAP

The remarkable improvement in the estimates of different cosmological parameters in recent years has been largely spearheaded by accurate measurements of the angular power spectrum of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. This has required removal of foreground contamination as well as detector noise bias with reliability and precision. Recently, a novel model-independent method for the estimation of CMB angular power spectrum from multi-frequency observations has been proposed and implemented on the first year WMAP (WMAP-1) data by Saha et al.~2006. We review the results from WMAP-1 and also present the new angular power spectrum based on three years of the WMAP data (WMAP-3). Previous estimates have depended on foreground templates built using extraneous observational input to remove foreground contamination. This is the first demonstration that the CMB angular spectrum can be reliably estimated with precision from a self contained analysis of the WMAP data. The primary product of WMAP are the observations of CMB in 10 independent difference assemblies (DA) distributed over 5 frequency bands that have uncorrelated noise. Our method utilizes maximum information available within WMAP data by linearly combining DA maps from different frequencies to remove foregrounds and estimating the power spectrum from the 24 cross power spectra of clean maps that have independent noise. An important merit of the method is that the expected residual power from unresolved point sources is significantly tempered to a constant offset at large multipoles (in contrast to the ~l^2 contribution expected from a Poisson distribution) leading to a small correction at large multipoles. Hence, the power spectrum estimates are less susceptible to uncertainties in the model of point sources.

A blind estimation of the power spectrum of CMB anisotropy from WMAP

Accurate measurements of angular power spectrum of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation has lead to marked improvement in the estimates of different cosmological parameters. This has required removal of foreground contamination as well as detector noise bias with reliability and precision. We present the estimation of CMB angular power spectrum from the multi-frequency observations of WMAP using a novel {\em model-independent} method. The primary product of WMAP are the observations of CMB in 10 independent difference assemblies (DA) that have uncorrelated noise. Our method utilizes maximum information available within WMAP data by linearly combining all the DA maps to remove foregrounds and estimating the power spectrum from cross power spectra of clean maps with independent noise. We compute 24 cross power spectra which are the basis of the final power spectrum. The binned average power matches with WMAP team's published power spectrum closely. A small systematic difference at large multipoles is accounted for by the correction for the expected residual power from unresolved point sources. The correction is small and significantly tempered. Previous estimates have depended on foreground templates built using extraneous observational input. This is the first demonstration that the CMB angular spectrum can be reliably estimated with precision from a *self contained analysis* of the WMAP data.

Interferometric Parallax: A Method for Measurement of Astronomical Distances

We show that distances of objects at cosmological distances can be measured directly using interferometry. Our approach to interferometric parallax comes from analysis of 4-point amplitude and intensity correlations that can be generated from pairs of well-separated detectors. The baseline required to measure cosmological distances of Gigaparsec order are within the reach of the next generation of space-borne detectors. The semi-classical interpretation of intensity correlations uses a notion of a single photon taking two paths simultaneously. Semi-classically a single photon can simultaneously enter four detectors separated by an astronomical unit, developing correlations feasible to measure with current technology.
