Neutrino Absorption Tomography of the Earth's Interior using Isotropic Ultra-high Energy Flux

We study the feasibility of using an isotropic flux of cosmic neutrinos in the energy range of 10 to 10000 TeV to study the interior structure of Earth. The angular distribution of events in a $\sim {\rm km}^3$-scale neutrino telescope can be inverted to yield information on the Earth's mass distribution that is independent of other methods. The energy spectrum of the neutrino primaries is also determined from consistency with the angular distribution. It is possible to make a model independent determination of the density profile of Earth's interior, separate from the absolute normalization of the incident cosmic neutrinos.

Covariant Symmetry Classifications for Observables of Cosmological Birefringence

Polarizations of electromagnetic waves from distant galaxies are known to be correlated with the source orientations. These quantities have been used to search for signals of cosmological birefringence. We review and classify transformation properties of the polarization and source orientation observables. The classifications give a firm foundation to certain practices which have sprung up informally in the literature. Transformations under parity play a central role, showing that parity violation in emission or in the subsequent propagation is an observable phenomenon. We also discuss statistical measures, correlations and distributions which transform properly and which can be used for systematic data analysis.

Limits on Exotic Quarks in the SU(3)xU(1) Extension of the Standard Model from SUSY Search Data

We study the $p\bar p$ production and decay of exotic quarks that are predicted by the SU(3)$\times$U(1) extension of the Standard Model. We show that recent experimental searches for SUSY particles at the Tevatron limit the mass of these quarks to be above 250 GeV. Run II will extend the reach to 320 GeV. This is one example of SUSY search signatures that apply directly to another, quite different, new physics model.

The perturbative proton form factor reexamined

We recalculate the proton Dirac form factor based on the perturbative QCD factorization theorem which includes Sudakov suppression. The evolution scale of the proton wave functions and the infrared cutoffs for the Sudakov resummation are carefully chosen, such that the soft divergences from large coupling constants are diminished and perturbative QCD predictions are stablized. We find that the King-Sachrajda model for the proton wave function leads to results which are in better agreement with experimental data compared to the Chernyak-Zhitnitsky wave function.

The Corkscrew Effect

We discuss a new mechanism which could cause a rotation of polarization of electromagnetic waves due to magnetic fields on cosmological scales. The effect is due to the geometrical phase of Pancharatnam and Berry, and causes a corkscrew twisting of the plane of polarization. The new effect represents an additional tool that allows possible intergalactic and cosmological magnetic fields to be studied using radio propagation.

Single Top from Technipion Production

We investigate the contribution of technicolor mechanisms to the production of single top quarks at hadron colliders. Technipions with mass larger than the top mass will decay predominantly to a top quark plus a bottom antiquark. We investigate two promising sub-processes: technipion plus W-boson via gluon-gluon fusion and technipion plus quark production via quark gluon interaction. The decay chain of technipion to top plus bottom quarks and then top to W plus bottom yields final states for the two subprocesses with, respectively, two W's and two bottom quarks and one W, two bottom quarks and a light quark. We calculate the total cross sections and the $p_{T}$ distributions for these technipion production mechanisms at Tevatron and LHC energies for a range of technipion masses, starting at 200 GeV. We study the backgrounds to our processes and the kinematic cuts that enhance the signal to background ratio and we report event rate estimates for the upgraded Tevatron and the LHC. Only the LHC has the potential to observe these processes.

Technicolor Mechanisms for Single Top Production

We investigate the contribution of technicolor mechanisms to the production of single top quarks at hadron colliders. We find that a promising candidate process is gluon-gluon fusion to produce a W-boson plus technipion, with subsequent decay of the technipion to a top quark plus a bottom quark. The top-plus-bottom mode is the dominant one when the technipion mass is larger than the top mass. We calculate the total cross section and the $p_{T}$ distribution for the technipion production at Tevatron and LHC energies for a range of technipion masses, starting at 200 GeV. The decay chain of technipion to top plus bottom quarks and then top to W plus bottom yields a final state with two W's and two bottom quarks. We study the backgrounds to our process and the kinematic cuts that maximize the signal to background. We report event rate estimates for the upgraded Tevatron and the LHC.

Quantum Color Transparency and Nuclear Filtering

Color transparency is the proposal that under certain circumstances the strong interactions can be reduced in magnitude. We give a comprehensive review of the physics, which hinges on the interface of perturbative QCD with non--perturbative strong interactions. Color transparency is complementary to {\it nuclear filtering}, which is the conversion of quark wave functions in hadrons to small transverse space dimensions by interaction with a nuclear medium. We review current approaches, including pictures based on modeling the time evolution of hadronic wave--packets as well as the use of light cone matrix elements. Spin plays an intrinsic role in testing and understanding the physics and is discussed at length. We emphasize the use of data analysis procedures which have minimal model dependence. We also review existing experimental data and the experimental program planned at various facilities. The subject has strong scientific complementarity and potential to make progress in exploring hadron physics at current and future facilities.

Dynamical Generation of Light Fermions

We show that composite fermions with masses much smaller than the scale of confinement arise naturally in certain models which admit dynamical breakdown of chiral symmetry. The models are such that to leading order some of the fermions remain massless but pick up small dynamical masses at subleading order.

Possible Higgs Boson Effects on the Running of Third and Fourth Generation Quark Masses and Mixings.

The Schwinger-Dyson equation for the quark self-energy is solved for the case of the third and fourth quark generations. The exchanges of standard model gluons and Higgs bosons are taken into account. It is found that Higgs boson exchange dominates quark self-energy in the ultraviolet region for sufficiently large input quark masses, causing the running quark propagator mass to increase with energy-scale. No running of the quark mixing angles is found for input quark masses up to and including 500 GeV.

A Nonperturbative, Schwinger-Dyson-Equation Analysis of Quark Masses and Mixings in a Model with QCD and Higgs Interactions

The Landau gauge Schwinger-Dyson Equation for the quark self-energy is solved in the quenched ladder approximation for several cases of one- and two-quark-generations. The exchanges of Standard Model gluons and Higgs bosons are taken into account. It is found that Higgs boson exchange dominates the quark self-energy for sufficiently large input quark masses (>75 GeV), causing the running quark propagator mass to increase with energy-scale. The running of the quark mixing angles is also considered. No running of the quark mixing angles is found, to one part in a billion, for input quark masses up to and including 500 GeV.

Heavy Meson Radiative Decays and Light Vector Meson Dominance

Electromagnetic interactions are introduced in the effective chiral Lagrangian for heavy mesons which includes light vector particles. A suitable notion of vector meson dominance is formulated. The constraints on the heavy meson -light vector and heavy meson-light pseudoscalar coupling constants are obtained using experimental $D^* \ra D \, γ$ branching ratios. These constraints are compared with values estimated from semi-leptonic transition amplitudes as well as from extension of the light meson coupling pattern. Application to the heavy baryon spectrum in the ``bound state " model is made.

Evidence for Gluon Energy Loss as the Mechanism for Heavy Quarkonium Suppression in $pA$ Collisions

We study the energy and nuclear A dependence of the hadronic production of heavy quarkonia. We review theoretical ideas which have been put forward, seeking a consistent global picture reconciling the large effects in quarkonia with the small nuclear effects observed in continuum Drell Yan production. The data indicates that shadowing or leading twist modifications of parton distributions can be ruled out as explanations, leaving higher twist energy loss. {}From general principles the maximum allowed energy loss of partons traversing the nuclear medium can be related to the parton transverse momenta. We then show that the experimental data on nuclear suppression of charm- and bottom- onium for large $x_F$ is consistent with this effect: using the observed transverse momenta to bound the $x_F$ dependence in an almost model independent manner generates a relation that practically reproduces the data. Several prediction are discussed; the dependence on $x_F$ as $x_F\to 1$, and large and small $k_T^2$ cuts, can be used to discriminate between quark and gluon induced effects.

Three Successful Tests of Color Transparency and Nuclear Filtering

We review the theoretical formalism for hard exclusive processes in a nuclear medium. Theory suggests that these processes will show the very interesting phenomena of color transparency and nuclear filtering. The survival probability in nuclear media has also been predicted to show a scaling behavior at large momentum and large nuclear number. We show that all of these effects may have already been seen experimentally.

Isospin Multiplet Structure in Ultra--Heavy Fermion Bound States

The coupled Bethe--Salpeter bound state equations for a $Q\bar Q$ system, where $Q=(U,D)$ is a degenerate, fourth generation, super--heavy quark doublet, are solved in several ladder approximation models. The exchanges of gluon, Higgs and Goldstone modes in the standard model are calculated in the ultra--heavy quark limit where weak $γ, W^\pm$ and $Z^0$ contributions are negligible. A natural $I=0$ and $I=1$ multiplet pattern is found, with large splittings occuring between the different weak iso--spin states when $M_Q$, the quark masses, are larger than values in the range $0.4 TeV<M_Q<0.8 TeV$, depending on which model is used. Consideration of ultra--heavy quark lifetime constraints and $U-D$ mass splitting constraints are reviewed to establish the plausibility of lifetime and mass degeneracy requirements assumed for this paper.

Evidence for Observation of Color Transparency in Proton Nucleus Collisions

We introduce a data analysis procedure for color transparency experiments which is considerably less model dependent than the transparency ratio method. The new method is based on fitting the shape of the A dependence of the nuclear cross section at fixed momentum transfer to determine the effective attenuation cross section for hadrons propagating through the nucleus. The hard scattering cross section is then determined directly from the data. We apply this procedure to the Brookhaven experiment of Carroll et al and find that it clearly shows color transparency: the effective attenuation cross section in events with momentum transfer $Q^2$ is approximately $40\ mb\ (2.2\ GeV^2/Q^2)$. The fit to the data also supports the idea that the hard scattering inside the nuclear medium is closer to perturbative QCD predictions than is the scattering of isolated protons in free space. We discuss the application of our approach to electroproduction experiments.

Evidence for Observation of Color Transparency in pa Collisions Using Global Fit and Scaling Law Analysis

We review a new systematic data analysis procedure for color transparency experiments and its application to the proton nucleus scattering experiment. The method extracts the hard scattering rate as well as the survival probability for the protons travelling through the nucleus directly from the data. The method requires modelling of the nuclear attenuation in terms of an effective nucleon-nucleon cross section. We can minimize this model dependence by introducing a new scaling law analysis procedure which can yield considerable information with very little theoretical input. With sufficient data the functional forms of the survival probability as well as the hard scattering can be extracted without any theoretical modelling. An analysis of the BNL data of Carroll {\it et al} shows clear evidence for observation of color transparency.

Measuring Chirally Odd Wave Functions with Helicity Flip Form Factors

We consider the role of chirally odd wave functions in hard exclusive reactions. Such wave functions have the quarks oriented in the opposite helicity configuration from those assumed in the short-distance limit and are generally associated with non-zero orbital angular momentum. Calculations in the impulse approximation allow for non-zero helicity flip amplitudes while the conventional factorization prescription for exclusive processes does not. By introducing a new approach, we show how helicity flip form factors are nevertheless calculable in QCD.
