The Anisotropic Gaussian Semi-Classical Schrödinger Propagator

We present a construction of the Anisotropic Gaussian Semi-Classical Schrödinger Propagator, emblematic of a class of Fourier Integral Operators of quadratic phase kernels related to the Schrödinger equation. We deduce a set of algebraic relations of the variational matrices, solutions of the variational system pertaining to single Gaussian wave packet semi-classical time evolution, representing the symplectic and other invariances of the dynamics, which are subsequently used to derive the Van Vleck formula from the semi-classical propagator, as an argument for the practical importance of the later relations in the relevant wave packet calculus.

Asymptotic Approximations for the Phase Space Schrodinger Equation

We consider semi-classical time evolution for the phase space Schrödinger equation and present two methods of constructing short time asymptotic solutions. The first method consists of constructing a semi-classical phase space propagator in terms of semi-classical Gaussian wave packets on the basis of the Anisotropic Gaussian Approximation, related to the Nearby Orbit Approximation, by which we derive an asymptotic solution for configuration space WKB initial data. The second method consists of constructing a phase space narrow beam asymptotic solution, following the Complex WKB Theory developed by Maslov, on the basis of a canonical system in double phase space related to the Berezin-Shubin-Marinov Hamilton-Jacobi and transport equations. We illustrate the methods for sub-quadratic potentials in $\mathbb{R}$.

Counting nodal domains on surfaces of revolution

We consider eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on special surfaces of revolution. For this separable system, the nodal domains of the (real) eigenfunctions form a checker-board pattern, and their number $ν_n$ is proportional to the product of the angular and the "surface" quantum numbers. Arranging the wave functions by increasing values of the Laplace-Beltrami spectrum, we obtain the nodal sequence, whose statistical properties we study. In particular we investigate the distribution of the normalized counts $\frac{ν_n}{n}$ for sequences of eigenfunctions with $K \le n\le K + ΔK$ where $K,ΔK \in \mathbb{N}$. We show that the distribution approaches a limit as $K,ΔK\to\infty$ (the classical limit), and study the leading corrections in the semi-classical limit. With this information, we derive the central result of this work: the nodal sequence of a mirror-symmetric surface is sufficient to uniquely determine its shape (modulo scaling).

Can one count the shape of a drum?

Sequences of nodal counts store information on the geometry (metric) of the domain where the wave equation is considered. To demonstrate this statement, we consider the eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on surfaces of revolution. Arranging the wave functions by increasing values of the eigenvalues, and counting the number of their nodal domains, we obtain the nodal sequence whose properties we study. This sequence is expressed as a trace formula, which consists of a smooth (Weyl-like) part which depends on global geometrical parameters, and a fluctuating part which involves the classical periodic orbits on the torus and their actions (lengths). The geometrical content of the nodal sequence is thus explicitly revealed.
