Letter Of Intent for a future $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$ experiment at the High Intensity Muon Beam facility at PSI

Searches for charged lepton flavor violation in the muon sector stand out among the most sensitive and clean probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. Currently, $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$ experiments provide the best constraints in this field for a wide range of models while, in the coming years, new experiments investigating the processes of $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ \mathrm{e}^+ \mathrm{e}^-$ and $\mu \to \mathrm{e}$ conversion in the nuclear field are anticipated to reach comparable or higher sensitivities. The High-Intensity Muon Beam (HIMB) facility at PSI, which is expected to deliver muon beam intensities up to two orders of magnitude higher than the existing beam lines, offers a unique opportunity to significantly enhance the sensitivity of $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$ searches. The discovery potential could be substantially boosted and a sensitivity comparable to that of all the other projects could be reestablished, which is essential for discriminating among competing new-physics scenarios should an observation occur in any of the channels. In this document, we express our interest in developing a $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$ experimental program at HIMB, with the goal of improving, within the next decade, the sensitivity of the $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$ search by more than one order of magnitude relative to the expected final result of the current leading experiment, MEG II. This effort would ensure that PSI retains its leadership in this field.

Radiative corrections and Monte Carlo tools for low-energy hadronic cross sections in $e^+ e^-$ collisions

We present the results of Phase I of an ongoing review of Monte Carlo tools relevant for low-energy hadronic cross sections. This includes a detailed comparison of Monte Carlo codes for electron-positron scattering into a muon pair, pion pair, and electron pair, for scan and radiative-return experiments. After discussing the various approaches that are used and effects that are included, we show differential cross sections obtained with AfkQed, BabaYaga@NLO, KKMC, MCGPJ, McMule, Phokhara, and Sherpa, for scenarios that are inspired by experiments providing input for the dispersive evaluation of the hadronic vacuum polarisation.

The future search for low-frequency axions and new physics with the FLASH resonant cavity experiment at Frascati National Laboratories

We present a proposal for a new experiment, the FINUDA magnet for Light Axion SearcH (FLASH), a large resonant-cavity haloscope in a high static magnetic field which is planned to probe new physics in the form of dark matter (DM) axions, scalar fields, chameleons, hidden photons, as well as high frequency gravitational waves (GWs). Concerning the QCD axion, FLASH will search for these particles as the DM in the mass range (0.49-1.49) ueV, thus filling the mass gap between the ranges covered by other planned searches. A dedicated Microstrip SQUID operating at ultra-cryogenic temperatures will amplify the signal. The frequency range accessible overlaps with the Very High Frequency (VHF) range of the radio wave spectrum and allows for a search in GWs in the frequency range (100-300) MHz. The experiment will make use of the cryogenic plant and magnet of the FINUDA experiment at INFN Frascati National Laboratories near Rome (Italy); the operations needed to restore the functionalities of the apparatus are currently underway. We present the setup of the experiment and the sensitivity forecasts for the detection of axions, scalar fields, chameleons, hidden photons, and GWs.

Direct Dark Matter search with the XENON program

We present the most recent results from XENON100, the current phase of the XENON dark matter search program. XENON100 is a dual phase time-projection chamber operated at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) whose ultra-low electromagnetic background, about 5 x 10^-3 events/(kg x day x keV), allowed to set the most stringent limit to date, excluding WIMP-nucleon spin-independent interaction down to cross-sections of 2 x 10^-45 cm^2 for a 55 GeV/c^2 mass at 90% confidence level and 3.5 x10^-40 for 45 GeV/c^2 in the spin-dependent interaction with neutrons. We also introduce the status and physics goal of XENON1T, the next phase of the program, which will be able to achieve sensitivity down to 2 x 10^-47 cm^2 for a WIMP of 50 GeV/c^2.

Hadronic cross section measurements and contribution to $(g-2)_μ$ with KLOE

The KLOE experiment at the DA$Φ$NE $ϕ$-factory has performed a new precise measurement of the pion form factor using Initial State Radiation events. Results based on an integrated luminosity of 240 pb$^{-1}$ and extraction of the $ππ$ contribution to $a_μ$ in the mass range $0.35< M^2_{ππ}<0.95$ GeV$^2$ are presented. The new value of $a^{ππ}_μ$ has smaller statistical and systematic error and is consistent with the KLOE published value (confirming the current disagreement between the Standard Model prediction for $a_μ$ and the measured value).
