Universality and Crossover of Directed Polymers and Growing Surfaces

We study KPZ surfaces on Euclidean lattices and directed polymers on hierarchical lattices subject to different distributions of disorder, showing that universality holds, at odds with recent results on Euclidean lattices. Moreover, we find the presence of a slow (power-law) crossover toward the universal values of the exponents and verify that the exponent governing such crossover is universal too. In the limit of a 1+epsilon dimensional system we obtain both numerically and analytically that the crossover exponent is 1/2.

Berry Phase and the Symmetry of the Vibronic Ground State in Dynamical Jahn-Teller Systems

Due to the frequent presence of a Berry phase, in most cases of dynamical Jahn-Teller systems the symmetry of the ground state is the same as that of the electronic state. However, the H x h icosahedral case, relevant for the physics of fullerene ions, provides a first example of linear coupling leading, at strong coupling, to a change in symmetry of the ground state to a totally symmetric nondegenerate state. We generalize this observation and show through detailed examples that the absence of a Berry phase can, but does not necessarily, lead to a nondegenerate ground state.

Critical exponents of the anisotropic Bak-Sneppen model

We analyze the behavior of spatially anisotropic Bak-Sneppen model. We demonstrate that a nontrivial relation between critical exponents tau and mu=d/D, recently derived for the isotropic Bak-Sneppen model, holds for its anisotropic version as well. For one-dimensional anisotropic Bak-Sneppen model we derive a novel exact equation for the distribution of avalanche spatial sizes, and extract the value gamma=2 for one of the critical exponents of the model. Other critical exponents are then determined from previously known exponent relations. Our results are in excellent agreement with Monte Carlo simulations of the model as well as with direct numerical integration of the new equation.

Self-organized criticality in deterministic systems with disorder

Using the Bak-Sneppen model of biological evolution as our paradigm, we investigate in which cases noise can be substituted with a deterministic signal without destroying Self-Organized Criticality (SOC). If the deterministic signal is chaotic the universality class is preserved; some non-universal features, such as the threshold, depend on the time correlation of the signal. We also show that, if the signal introduced is periodic, SOC is preserved but in a different universality class, as long as the spectrum of frequencies is broad enough.

The role of the Berry Phase in Dynamical Jahn-Teller Systems

The presence/absence of a Berry phase depends on the topology of the manifold of dynamical Jahn-Teller potential minima. We describe in detail the relation between these topological properties and the way the lowest two adiabatic potential surfaces get locally degenerate. We illustrate our arguments through spherical generalizations of the linear T x h and H x h cases, relevant for the physics of fullerene ions. Our analysis allows us to classify all the spherical Jahn-Teller systems with respect to the Berry phase. Its absence can, but does not necessarily, lead to a nondegenerate ground state.

Directed Polymers on a Factorized Disorder Landscape

We study the Directed Polymer model subject to a particular form of disorder, $η(x,t)=η_X(x) η_T(t)$, recently proposed in biological applications. We find that two new universality classes arise, depending on the the lattice geometry. Using an intermediate model linking the two different orientations continuously, we find that there is a phase transition separating two distinct scaling phases. For both phases we get a reasonable understanding of the nature and values of the exponents, corroborated with numerical results.

Expansion Around the Mean-Field Solution of the Bak-Sneppen Model

We study a recently proposed equation for the avalanche distribution in the Bak-Sneppen model. We demonstrate that this equation indirectly relates $τ$,the exponent for the power law distribution of avalanche sizes, to $D$, the fractal dimension of an avalanche cluster. We compute this relation numerically and approximate it analytically up to the second order of expansion around the mean field exponents. Our results are consistent with Monte Carlo simulations of Bak-Sneppen model in one and two dimensions.

Berry-Phase and Symmetry of the Ground State in Dynamical Jahn-Teller Systems

We show through selected examples, relevant to the physics of fullerene ions, that the presence of a Berry phase in dynamical Jahn-Teller systems does not guarantee the degeneracy of the ground state, contrary to what previously believed. Moreover, we introduce a new class of Jahn-Teller systems with no Berry phase, as a generalization of the basic icosahedral $H \otimes h$ case.

Self-Organized Criticality Driven by Deterministic Rules

We have investigated the essential ingredients allowing a system to show Self Organized Criticality (SOC) in its collective behavior. Using the Bak-Sneppen model of biological evolution as our paradigm, we show that the random microscopic rules of update can be effectively substituted with a chaotic map without changing the universality class. Using periodic maps SOC is preserved, but in a different universality class, as long as the spectrum of frequencies is broad enough.
