Kobayashi length bounds on bordered surfaces and generalized integral points on abelian varieties

Let $B$ be a compact Riemann surface and $B_0\subset B$ a bordered hyperbolic subsurface obtained by removing finitely many disjoint closed disks. Fix a nontrivial loop $\alpha$ in $B_0$. For $s\ge 0$, let $L(\alpha,s)$ denote the supremum, over all finite subsets $S\subset B_0$ with $\#S\le s$, of the minimal Kobayashi length of a loop in $B_0\smallsetminus S$ that is freely homotopic to $\alpha$ in $B_0$. Phung in [7] proved that $L(\alpha,s)$ grows at most linearly and at least as $\sqrt{s}/\log s$. We sharpen the upper bound to $O\left(\sqrt{s\log s}\right)$, which determines $\lim_{s\to\infty}\frac{\log L(\alpha,s)}{\log s}=\frac{1}{2}$, answering a question raised in [7, Question 1.4]. As an application, we improve the counting bound for generalized integral points on abelian varieties over complex function fields: for an abelian variety of dimension $n$ over $\mathbb C(B)$, Phung proved that the number of $(s, B_0)$-generalized integral points modulo the constant trace grows at most as $s^{2nk}$, where $k=\operatorname{rk}(\pi_1(B_0))$. We sharpen this to $s^{nk+\varepsilon}$ for every $\varepsilon>0$, halving the exponent.

Relative monodromy of ramified sections on abelian schemes

Let's fix a complex abelian scheme $\mathcal A\to S$ of relative dimension $g$, without fixed part, and having maximal variation in moduli. We show that the relative monodromy group $M^{\textrm{rel}}_\sigma$ of a ramified section $\sigma\colon S\to\mathcal A$ is nontrivial. Moreover, under some hypotheses on the action of the monodromy group $\textrm{Mon}(\mathcal A)$ we show that $M^{\textrm{rel}}_\sigma\cong \mathbb Z^{2g}$. We discuss several examples and applications. For instance we provide a new proof of Manin's kernel theorem and of the algebraic independence of the coordinates of abelian logarithms with respect to the coordinates of periods.

Finite translation orbits on double families of abelian varieties (with an appendix by E. Amerik)

We study two families of $g$-dimensional abelian varieties, induced by distinct rational maps defined on a common variety $\overline{\mathcal A}$ and mapping to two bases $\overline{S}_1$ and $\overline{S}_2$. Two non-torsion sections induce birational fiberwise translations on $\overline{\mathcal A}$. We consider the action of a specific subset of the group generated by these translations. Under the assumption that $\operatorname{dim} \overline{S}_1 (= \operatorname{dim} \overline{S}_2) \leq g$, we prove that the points with finite orbit are contained in a proper Zariski closed subset. This subset is explicitly described to a certain extent. Our results generalize a theorem of Corvaja, Tsimermann, and Zannier to higher dimensions.

A note on some Diophantine inequalities over adelic curves

Without assuming the Northcott property we provide an upper bound on the number of "big solutions" of a special system of Diophantine inequalities over proper adelic curves. This system is interesting since it is a stronger version Roth's inequality for adelic curves.

Intersection matrices for the minimal regular model of ${X}_0(N)$ and applications to the Arakelov canonical sheaf

Let $N>1$ be an integer coprime to $6$ such that $N\notin\{5,7,13\}$ and let $g=g(N)$ be the genus of the modular curve $X_0(N)$. We compute the intersection matrices relative to special fibres of the minimal regular model of $X_0(N)$. Moreover we prove that the self-intersection of the Arakelov canonical sheaf of $X_0(N)$ is asymptotic to $3g\log N$, for $N\to+\infty$.

On the generalisation of Roth's theorem

We present two possible generalisations of Roth's approximation theorem on proper adelic curves, assuming some technical conditions on the behavior of the logarithmic absolute values. We illustrate how tightening such assumptions makes our inequalities stronger. As special cases we recover Corvaja's results [Cor97] for fields admitting a product formula, and Vojta's ones [Voj21] for arithmetic function fields.

Numerical equivalence of $\mathbb R$-divisors and Shioda-Tate formula for arithmetic varieties

Let $X$ be an arithmetic variety over the ring of integers of a number field $K$, with smooth generic fiber $X_K$. We give a formula that relates the dimension of the first Arakelov-Chow vector space of $X$ with the Mordell-Weil rank of the Albanese variety of $X_K$ and the rank of the Néron-Severi group of $X_K$. This is a higher dimensional and arithmetic version of the classical Shioda-Tate formula for elliptic surfaces. Such analogy is strengthened by the fact that we show that the numerically trivial arithmetic $\mathbb{R}$-divisors on $X$ are exactly the linear combinations of principal ones. This result is equivalent to the non-degeneracy of the arithmetic intersection pairing in the argument of divisors, partially confirming [GS94, Conjecture 1].

Explicit Deligne pairing

We give an explicit formula for the Deligne pairing for a proper and flat morphisms $f:X\to S$ of schemes, in terms of the determinant of cohomology. The whole construction is justified by an analogy with the intersection theory on non-singular projective algebraic varieties.

Adelic geometry on arithmetic surfaces I: idelic and adelic interpretation of the Deligne pairing

For an arithmetic surface $X\to B=\operatorname{Spec} O_K$ the Deligne pairing $\left <\,,\,\right > \colon \operatorname{Pic}(X) \times \operatorname{Pic}(X) \to \operatorname{Pic}(B)$ gives the "schematic contribution" to the Arakelov intersection number. We present an idelic and adelic interpretation of the Deligne pairing; this is the first crucial step for a full idelic and adelic interpretation of the Arakelov intersection number. For the idelic approach we show that the Deligne pairing can be lifted to a pairing $\left<\,,\,\right>_i:\ker(d^1_\times)\times \ker(d^1_\times)\to\operatorname{Pic}(B) $, where $\ker(d^1_\times)$ is an important subspace of the two dimensional idelic group $\mathbf A_X^\times$. On the other hand, the argument for the adelic interpretation is entirely cohomological.

Adelic geometry on arithmetic surfaces II: completed adeles and idelic Arakelov intersection theory

We work with completed adelic structures on an arithmetic surface and justify that the construction under consideration is compatible with Arakelov geometry. The ring of completed adeles is algebraically and topologically self-dual and fundamental adelic subspaces are self orthogonal with respect to a natural differential pairing. We show that the Arakelov intersection pairing can be lifted to an idelic intersection pairing.
