Topological order, mixed states and open systems

The role of mixed states in topological quantum matter is less known than that of pure quantum states. Generalisations of topological phases appearing in pure states had received only quite recently attention in the literature. In particular, it is still unclear whether the generalisation of the Aharonov-Anandan phase for mixed states due to Uhlmann plays any physical role in the behaviour of the quantum systems. We analyse from a general viewpoint topological phases of mixed states and the robustness of their invariance. In particular, we analyse the role of these phases in the behaviour of systems with a periodic symmetry and their evolution under the influence of an environment preserving its crystalline symmetries.

Nonexponential decay of Feshbach molecules

We analyze the temporal behavior of the survival probability of an unstable $^6$Li Feshbach molecule close to the BCS-BEC crossover. We find different instances of nonexponential decay as the magnetic field approaches the resonance value, at which the molecule becomes stable. We observe a transition from an exponential decay towards a regime dominated by a stretched-exponential law.

Distributed Quantum Metrology with a Single Squeezed-Vacuum Source

We propose an interferometric scheme for the estimation of a linear combination with non-negative weights of an arbitrary number $M>1$ of unknown phase delays, distributed across an $M$-channel linear optical network, with Heisenberg-limited sensitivity. This is achieved without the need of any sources of photon-number or entangled states, photon-number resolving detectors or auxiliary interferometric channels. Indeed, the proposed protocol remarkably relys upon a single squeezed state source, an antisqueezing operation at the interferometer output, and on-off photodetectors.

Generalized Product Formulas and Quantum Control

We study the quantum evolution under the combined action of the exponentials of two not necessarily commuting operators. We consider the limit in which the two evolutions alternate at infinite frequency. This case appears in a plethora of situations, both in physics (Feynman integral) and mathematics (product formulas). We focus on the case in which the two evolution times are scaled differently in the limit and generalize standard techniques and results.

Phase diagram of bipartite entanglement

We investigate the features of the entanglement spectrum (distribution of the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix) of a large quantum system in a pure state. We consider all Rényi entropies and recover purity and von Neumann entropy as particular cases. We construct the phase diagram of the theory and unveil the presence of two critical lines.

Generalized Adiabatic Theorem and Strong-Coupling Limits

We generalize Kato's adiabatic theorem to nonunitary dynamics with an isospectral generator. This enables us to unify two strong-coupling limits: one driven by fast oscillations under a Hamiltonian, and the other driven by strong damping under a Lindbladian. We discuss the case where both mechanisms are present and provide nonperturbative error bounds. We also analyze the links with the quantum Zeno effect and dynamics.

Bound states in the continuum for an array of quantum emitters

We study the existence of bound states in the continuum for a system of n two-level quantum emitters, coupled with a one-dimensional boson field, in which a single excitation is shared among different components of the system. The emitters are fixed and equally spaced. We first consider the approximation of distant emitters, in which one can find degenerate eigenspaces of bound states corresponding to resonant values of energy, parametrized by a positive integer. We then consider the full form of the eigenvalue equation, in which the effects of the finite spacing and the field dispersion relation become relevant, yielding also nonperturbative effects. We explicitly solve the cases n=3 and n=4.

Third-order phase transition: random matrices and screened Coulomb gas with hard walls

Consider the free energy of a $d$-dimensional gas in canonical equilibrium under pairwise repulsive interaction and global confinement, in presence of a volume constraint. When the volume of the gas is forced away from its typical value, the system undergoes a phase transition of the third order separating two phases (pulled and pushed). We prove this result i) for the eigenvalues of one-cut, off-critical random matrices (log-gas in dimension $d=1$) with hard walls; ii) in arbitrary dimension $d\geq1$ for a gas with Yukawa interaction (aka screened Coulomb gas) in a generic confining potential. The latter class includes systems with Coulomb (long range) and delta (zero range) repulsion as limiting cases. In both cases, we obtain an exact formula for the free energy of the constrained gas which explicitly exhibits a jump in the third derivative, and we identify the 'electrostatic pressure' as the order parameter of the transition. Part of these results were announced in [F. D. Cunden, P. Facchi, M. Ligabò and P. Vivo, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 51, 35LT01 (2018)].

Optimal Gaussian Metrology for Generic Multimode Interferometric Circuit

Bounds on the ultimate precision attainable in the estimation of a parameter in Gaussian quantum metrology are obtained when the average number of bosonic probes is fixed. We identify the optimal input probe state among generic (mixed in general) Gaussian states with a fixed average number of probe photons for the estimation of a parameter contained in a generic multimode interferometric optical circuit, namely, a passive linear circuit preserving the total number of photons. The optimal Gaussian input state is essentially a single-mode squeezed vacuum, and the ultimate precision is achieved by a homodyne measurement on the single mode. We also reveal the best strategy for the estimation when we are given $L$ identical target circuits and are allowed to apply passive linear controls in between with an arbitrary number of ancilla modes introduced.

Experimental investigation of quantum decay at short, intermediate and long times via integrated photonics

The decay of an unstable system is usually described by an exponential law. Quantum mechanics predicts strong deviations of the survival probability from the exponential: indeed, the decay is initially quadratic, while at very large times it follows a power law, with superimposed oscillations. The latter regime is particularly elusive and difficult to observe. Here we employ arrays of single-mode optical waveguides, fabricated by femtosecond laser direct inscription, to implement quantum systems where a discrete state is coupled and can decay into a continuum. The optical modes correspond to distinct quantum states of the photon and the temporal evolution of the quantum system is mapped into the spatial propagation coordinate. By injecting coherent light states in the fabricated photonic structures and by measuring light with an unprecedented dynamic range, we are able to experimentally observe not only the exponential decay regime, but also the quadratic Zeno region and the power-law decay at long evolution times.

Kick and fix: the roots of quantum control

When two operators $A$ and $B$ do not commute, the calculation of the exponential operator $e^{A+B}$ is a difficult and crucial problem. The applications are vast and diversified: to name but a few examples, quantum evolutions, product formulas, quantum control, Zeno effect. The latter are of great interest in quantum applications and quantum technologies. We present here a historical survey of results and techniques, and discuss differences and similarities. We also highlight the link with the strong coupling regime, via the adiabatic theorem, and contend that the "pulsed" and "continuous" formulations differ only in the order by which two limits are taken, and are but two faces of the same coin.

Correlated photon emission by two excited atoms in a waveguide

Systems of atoms coupled to a single or few waveguide modes provide a testbed for physically and practically interesting interference effects. We consider the dynamics of a pair of atoms, approximated as two-level quantum emitters, coupled to a linear guided mode. In particular, we analyze the evolution of an initial state in which both atoms are excited, which is expected to decay into an asymptotic two-photon state. We investigate the lifetime of the initial configuration and the properties of the asymptotic photon correlations, and analyze the probability that the two photons are emitted in the same or in opposite directions. We find that the ratio R between parallel and antiparallel emission probabilities is maximal when the interatomic distance is a half-multiple of the half-wavelength of the emitted light. In such a case, R=3 in the small-coupling regime.

Phase Transitions in $Z_{n}$ Gauge Models: Towards Quantum Simulations of the Schwinger-Weyl QED

We study the ground-state properties of a class of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ lattice gauge theories in 1 + 1 dimensions, in which the gauge fields are coupled to spinless fermionic matter. These models, stemming from discrete representations of the Weyl commutator for the $\mathrm{U}(1)$ group, preserve the unitary character of the minimal coupling, and have therefore the property of formally approximating lattice quantum electrodynamics in one spatial dimension in the large-$n$ limit. The numerical study of such approximated theories is important to determine their effectiveness in reproducing the main features and phenomenology of the target theory, in view of implementations of cold-atom quantum simulators of QED. In this paper we study the cases $n = 2 ÷8$ by means of a DMRG code that exactly implements Gauss' law. We perform a careful scaling analysis, and show that, in absence of a background field, all $\mathbb{Z}_n$ models exhibit a phase transition which falls in the Ising universality class, with spontaneous symmetry breaking of the $CP$ symmetry. We then perform the large-$n$ limit and find that the asymptotic values of the critical parameters approach the ones obtained for the known phase transition the zero-charge sector of the massive Schwinger model, which occurs at negative mass.

Universality of the weak pushed-to-pulled transition in systems with repulsive interactions

We consider a $d$-dimensional gas in canonical equilibrium under pairwise screened Coulomb repulsion and external confinement, and subject to a volume constraint. We show that its excess free energy displays a generic third-order singularity separating the pushed and pulled phases, irrespective of range of the pairwise interaction, dimension and details of the confining potential. The explicit expression of the excess free energy is universal and interpolates between the Coulomb (long-range) and the delta (zero-range) interaction. The order parameter of this transition - the electrostatic pressure generated by the surface excess charge - is determined by invoking a fundamental energy conservation argument.

Boundaries without boundaries

Starting with a quantum particle on a closed manifold without boundary, we consider the process of generating boundaries by modding out by a group action with fixed points, and we study the emergent quantum dynamics on the quotient manifold. As an illustrative example, we consider a free nonrelativistic quantum particle on the circle and generate the interval via parity reduction. A free particle with Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions on the interval is obtained, and, by changing the metric near the boundary, Robin boundary conditions can also be accommodated. We also indicate a possible method of generating non-local boundary conditions. Then, we explore an alternative generation mechanism which makes use of a folding procedure and is applicable to a generic Hamiltonian through the emergence of an ancillary spin degree of freedom.

Quantum cavities with alternating boundary conditions

We consider the quantum dynamics of a free nonrelativistic particle moving in a cavity and we analyze the effect of a rapid switching between two different boundary conditions. We show that this procedure induces, in the limit of infinitely frequent switchings, a new effective dynamics in the cavity related to a novel boundary condition. We obtain a dynamical composition law for boundary conditions which gives the emerging boundary condition in terms of the two initial ones.

On the derivation of the GKLS equation for weakly coupled systems

We consider the reduced dynamics of a small quantum system in interaction with a reservoir when the initial state is factorized. We present a rigorous derivation of a GKLS master equation in the weak-coupling limit for a generic bath, which is not assumed to have a bosonic or fermionic nature, and whose reference state is not necessarily thermal. The crucial assumption is a reservoir state endowed with a mixing property: the n-point connected correlation function of the interaction must be asymptotically bounded by the product of two-point functions (clustering property).

Positive Hamiltonians can give purely exponential decay

It is commonly claimed that only Hamiltonians with a spectrum unbounded both above and below can give purely exponential decay. Because such Hamiltonians have no ground state, they are considered unphysical. Here we show that Hamiltonians which are bounded below can give purely exponential decay. This is possible when, instead of looking at the global survival probability, one considers a subsystem only. We conclude that purely exponential decay might not be as unphysical as previously thought.
