The Physics of DAFNE and KLOE

DAFNE, the Frascati phi factory, has been in operation since 1999. At the center of the physics program is the KLOE experiment, a multipurpose detector with optimizations for tagged and interferometry-based measurements of the neutral kaon system. KLOE has been taking data since 2000 and has helped to explore a wide array of topics in kaon and hadronic physics, including a comprehensive set of measurements to determine the CKM matrix element |Vus|, and a measurement of the e+e- --> pi+pi- cross section for the determination of the hadronic contribution to the muon anomaly. In addition, the DEAR experiment has measured the X-ray spectrum of kaonic hydrogen, and the FINUDA experiment has conducted its first studies in hypernuclear spectroscopy and a search for \bar{K}-nuclear bound states. We review the design, construction, and operation of the DAFNE facility, with an emphasis on the physics program of the KLOE experiment.

Kaon Decays and Vus

Unitarity for the first row of the quark mixing matrix appears to be fully satisfied by the value of Vus obtained from recent new measurements of kaon semileptonic decay rates.

Physics at DAFNE2

The original plan of a vigorous program of frontier physics at LNF, based on the phi-factory DAFNE with the KLOE detector, has not yet reached its major aim in the study of discrete symmetries in the neutral kaon system. It has however led to the education of a new generation of particle and accelerator physicists. With such invaluable human resources it seems appropriate to consider a renewed effort in achieving much improved collider performance. It will be argued in the following that it is still possible to envision a program of superior quality physics, requiring several years and broad enough to justify a new collider operating at the phi-meson mass. It remains of paramount importance that the program covers topics of fundamental interest, with many collateral avenues well connected to the ultimate goal, a most sensitive test of CPT invariance. The appropriate time frame for these ventures to be successful is quite well defined, in view of the large LHC effort to begin towards the end of the present decade.

CP Violation in the K-System

CP violation in the K system is pedagogically reviewed. We discuss its manifestations in the neutral K meson systems, in rare K meson decays and in decays of charged K mesons. Results from classical experiments, and perspectives for upcoming experiments are included. We also briefly discuss the possibility of CPT tests.

CP and Rare Decays

$CP$ violation experiments, new measurements of the parameters of the neutral \K\ system and searches for rare decays are summarized. Perspectives for the near future are presented.
