Quantum chaos and operator fidelity metric

We show that the recently introduced operator fidelity metric provides a natural tool to investigate the cross-over to quantum chaotic behaviour. This metric is an information-theoretic measure of the global stability of a unitary evolution against perturbations. We use random matrix theory arguments to conjecture that the operator fidelity metric can be used as an "order parameter" to discriminates phases with regular behaviour from quantum chaotic ones. A numerical study of the onset of chaotic in the Dicke model is given in order to support the conjecture

Momentum-space analysis of multipartite entanglement at quantum phase transitions

We investigate entanglement properties at quantum phase transitions of an integrable extended Hubbard model in the momentum space representation. Two elementary subsystems are recognized: the single mode of an electron, and the pair of modes (electrons coupled through the eta-pairing mechanism). We first detect the two/multi-partite nature of each quantum phase transition by a comparative study of the singularities of Von Neumann entropy and quantum mutual information. We establish the existing relations between the correlations in the momentum representation and those exhibited in the complementary picture: the direct lattice representation. The presence of multipartite entanglement is then investigated in detail through the Q-measure, namely a generalization of the Meyer-Wallach measure of entanglement. Such a measure becomes increasingly sensitive to correlations of a multipartite nature increasing the size of the reduced density matrix. In momentum space, we succeed in obtaining the latter for our system at arbitrary size and we relate its behaviour to the nature of the various QPTs.

Structure of quantum correlations in momentum space and off diagonal long range order in eta pairing and BCS states

The quantum states built with the eta paring mechanism i.e., eta pairing states, were first introduced in the context of high temperature superconductivity where they were recognized as important example of states allowing for off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO). In this paper we describe the structure of the correlations present in these states when considered in their momentum representation and we explore the relations between the quantum bipartite/multipartite correlations exhibited in k space and the direct lattice superconducting correlations. In particular, we show how the negativity between paired momentum modes is directly related to the ODLRO. Moreover, we investigate the dependence of the block entanglement on the choice of the modes forming the block and on the ODLRO; consequently we determine the multipartite content of the entanglement through the evaluation of the generalized "Meyer Wallach" measure in the direct and reciprocal lattice. The determination of the persistency of entanglement shows how the network of correlations depicted exhibits a self-similar structure which is robust with respect to "local" measurements. Finally, we recognize how a relation between the momentum-space quantum correlations and the ODLRO can be established even in the case of BCS states.

Optimal estimation of entanglement

Entanglement does not correspond to any observable and its evaluation always corresponds to an estimation procedure where the amount of entanglement is inferred from the measurements of one or more proper observables. Here we address optimal estimation of entanglement in the framework of local quantum estimation theory and derive the optimal observable in terms of the symmetric logarithmic derivative. We evaluate the quantum Fisher information and, in turn, the ultimate bound to precision for several families of bipartite states, either for qubits or continuous variable systems, and for different measures of entanglement. We found that for discrete variables, entanglement may be efficiently estimated when it is large, whereas the estimation of weakly entangled states is an inherently inefficient procedure. For continuous variable Gaussian systems the effectiveness of entanglement estimation strongly depends on the chosen entanglement measure. Our analysis makes an important point of principle and may be relevant in the design of quantum information protocols based on the entanglement content of quantum states.

Bures metric over thermal state manifolds and quantum criticality

We analyze the Bures metric over the manifold of thermal density matrices for systems featuring a zero temperature quantum phase transition. We show that the quantum critical region can be characterized in terms of the temperature scaling behavior of the metric tensor itself. Furthermore, the analysis of the metric tensor when both temperature and an external field are varied, allows to complement the understanding of the phase diagram including cross-over regions which are not characterized by any singular behavior. These results provide a further extension of the scope of the metric approach to quantum criticality.

Entanglement in extended Hubbard models and quantum phase transitions

The role of two-point and multipartite entanglement at quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in correlated electron systems is investigated. We consider a bond-charge extended Hubbard model exactly solvable in one dimension which displays various QPTs, with two (qubit) as well as more (qudit) on-site degrees of freedom involved. The analysis is carried out by means of appropriate measures of bipartite/multipartite quantum correlations. It is found that all transitions ascribed to two-point correlations are characterized by an entanglement range which diverges at the transition points. The exponent coincides with that of the correlation length at the transitions. We introduce the correlation ratio, namely, the ratio of quantum mutual information and single-site entanglement. We show that at T=0, it captures the relative role of two-point and multipartite quantum correlations at transition points, generalizing to qudit systems the entanglement ratio. Moreover, a finite value of quantum mutual information between infinitely distant sites is seen to quantify the presence of off-diagonal long-range order induced by multipartite entanglement.

Two-Point Versus Multipartite Entanglement in Quantum Phase Transitions

We analyze correlations between subsystems for an extended Hubbard model exactly solvable in one dimension, which exhibits a rich structure of quantum phase transitions (QPTs). The T=0 phase diagram is exactly reproduced by studying singularities of single-site entanglement. It is shown how comparison of the latter quantity and quantum mutual information allows one to recognize whether two-point or shared quantum correlations are responsible for each of the occurring QPTs. The method works in principle for any number D of degrees of freedom per site. As a by-product, we are providing a benchmark for direct measures of bipartite entanglement; in particular, here we discuss the role of negativity at the transition.

Mode transformations and entanglement relativity in bipartite gaussian states

A proper choice of subsystems for a system of identical particles e.g., bosons, is provided by second-quantized modes i.e.,creation/annihilation operators. Here we investigate how the entanglement properties of bipartite gaussian states of bosons change when modes are changed by means of unitary, number conserving, Bogolioubov transformations. This set of "virtual" bi-partitions is then finite-dimensionally parametrized and one can quantitatively address relevant questions such as the determination of the minimal and maximal available entanglement. In particular, we show that in the class of bipartite gaussian states there are states which remain separable for every possible modes redefinition, while do not exist states which remain entangled for every possible modes redefinition

Semiclassical Shor's Algorithm

We propose a semiclassical version of Shor's quantum algorithm to factorize integer numbers, based on spin-1/2 SU(2) generalized coherent states. Surprisingly, we find evidences that the algorithm's success probability is not too severely modified by our semiclassical approximation. This suggests that it is worth pursuing practical implementations of the algorithm on semiclassical devices.

Ground-State Entanglement in Interacting Bosonic Graphs

We consider a collection of bosonic modes corresponding to the vertices of a graph $Γ.$ Quantum tunneling can occur only along the edges of $Γ$ and a local self-interaction term is present. Quantum entanglement of one vertex with respect the rest of the graph is analyzed in the ground-state of the system as a function of the tunneling amplitude $τ.$ The topology of $Γ$ plays a major role in determining the tunneling amplitude $τ^*$ which leads to the maximum ground-state entanglement. Whereas in most of the cases one finds the intuitively expected result $τ^*=\infty$ we show that it there exists a family of graphs for which the optimal value of$τ$ is pushed down to a finite value. We also show that, for complete graphs, our bi-partite entanglement provides useful insights in the analysis of the cross-over between insulating and superfluid ground states

Universal quantum control in irreducible state-space sectors: application to bosonic and spin-boson systems

We analyze the dynamical-algebraic approach to universal quantum control introduced in P. Zanardi, S. Lloyd, quant-ph/0305013. The quantum state-space $\cal H$ encoding information decomposes into irreducible sectors and subsystems associated to the group of available evolutions. If this group coincides with the unitary part of the group-algebra $\CC{\cal K}$ of some group $\cal K$ then universal control is achievable over the ${\cal K}$-irreducible components of $\cal H$. This general strategy is applied to different kind of bosonic systems. We first consider massive bosons in a double-well and show how to achieve universal control over all finite-dimensional Fock sectors. We then discuss a multi-mode massless case giving the conditions for generating the whole infinite-dimensional multi-mode Heisenberg-Weyl enveloping-algebra. Finally we show how to use an auxiliary bosonic mode coupled to finite-dimensional systems to generate high-order non-linearities needed for universal control.

Mode Entanglement and Entangling power in Bosonic Graphs

We analyze the quantum entanglement properties of bosonic particles hopping over graph structures.Mode-entanglement of a graph vertex with respect the rest of the graph is generated, starting from a product state, by turning on for a finite time a tunneling along the graph edges. The maximum achieved during the dynamical evolution by this bi-partite entanglement characterizes the entangling power of a given hopping hamiltonian. We studied this entangling power as a function of the self-interaction parameters i.e., non-linearities, for all the graphs up to four vertices and for two different natural choices of the initial state. The role of graph topology and self-interaction strengths in optimizing entanglement generation is extensively studied by means of exact numerical simulations and by perturbative calculations.
