A non extensive approach to the entropy of symbolic sequences

Symbolic sequences with long-range correlations are expected to result in a slow regression to a steady state of entropy increase. However, we prove that also in this case a fast transition to a constant rate of entropy increase can be obtained, provided that the extensive entropy of Tsallis with entropic index q is adopted, thereby resulting in a new form of entropy that we shall refer to as Kolmogorov-Sinai-Tsallis (KST) entropy. We assume that the same symbols, either 1 or -1, are repeated in strings of length l, with the probability distribution p(l) proportional to 1/(l^mu). The numerical evaluation of the KST entropy suggests that at the value mu = 2 a sort of abrupt transition might occur. For the values of mu in the range 1 diverges, thereby breaking the balance between determinism and randomness in favor of determinism. In the region mu > 2 the entropic index q seems to depend on mu through the power law expression q = (mu-2)^(alpha) with alpha approximately 0.13 (q = 1 with mu > 3). It is argued that this phase-transition like property signals the onset of the thermodynamical regime at mu = 2.

A Dynamic Approach to the Thermodynamics of Superdiffusion

We address the problem of relating thermodynamics to mechanics in the case of microscopic dynamics without a finite time scale. The solution is obtained by expressing the Tsallis entropic index q as a function of the Levy index alpha, and using dynamical rather than probabilistic arguments.

The transition from a classical to a quantum world as a passage from extensive to non-extensive thermodynamics

We study the thermodynamical properties of the quantum kicked rotator, coarsened by an external fluctuation with a weak intensity D, by means of the Tsallis entropy with a changing entropic index q. The genuine entropic index, corresponding to given values of D and $\hbar$ is that making the Tsallis entropy increase linearly in time, and it is proved to become q <1 for suitably large values of $\hbar $: This indicates a subdiffusional regime which, in turn, signals the occurrence of quantum localization. Thus the process of Anderson localization is shown to be compatible with a thermodynamical representation provided that a non-extensive form of entropy is used.

Chaos, Thermodynamics and Quantum Mechanics: an Application to Celestial Dynamics

We address the issue of the quantum-classical correspondence in chaotic systems using, as recently done by Zurek [e-print quant-ph/9802054], the solar system as a whole as a case study: this author shows that the classicality of the planetary motion is ensured by the environment-induced decoherence. We show that equivalent results are provided by the theories of spontaneous fluctuations and that these latter theories, in some cases, result in a still faster process of decoherence. We show that, as an additional benefit, the assumption of spontaneous fluctuation makes it possible to genuinely derive thermodynamics from mechanics, namely, without implicitly assuming thermodynamics.

Tunneling rate fluctuations induced by non-linear resonances: a quantitative treatment based on semiclassical arguments

We investigate the tunneling process between two symmetric stable islands of a forced pendulum Hamiltonian in the weak chaos regime. We show that when the tunneling doublet is quantized over a classical non-linear resonance the tunneling rate strongly deviates from the semiclassical prediction. This mechanism is responsible for the irregular dependence of the tunneling rate on the system parameters. The weak-chaos condition allows us to make a theoretical prediction which agrees very well with the numerical results. This opens up a possible avenue to a general theory on the dependence of quantum tunneling on classical chaos.
