Can a small Gaussian perturbation break subadditivity?

Given an integer $a\ge 1$, a function $f: \mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}$ is said to be $a$-subadditive if $$ f(ax+y) \le af(x)+f(y) \,\,\,\text{ for all }x,y \in \mathbb{R}. $$ Of course, $1$-subadditive functions (which correspond to ordinary subadditive functions) are $2$-subadditive. % and $3$-subadditive. Answering a question of Matkowski, we show that there exists a continuous function $f$ satisfying $f(0)=0$ which is $2$-subadditive but not $1$-subadditive. In addition, the same example is not $3$-subadditive, which shows that the sequence of families of continuous $a$-subadditive functions passing through the origin is not increasing with respect to $a$. The construction relies on a perturbation of a given subadditive function with an even Gaussian ring, which will destroy the original subadditivity while keeping the weaker property. Lastly, given a positive rational cone $H\subseteq (0,\infty)$ which is not finitely generated, we prove that there exists a subadditive bijection $f:H\to H$ such that $\liminf_{x\to 0}f(x)=0$ and $\limsup_{x\to 0}f(x)=1$. This is related an open question of Matkowski and {Ś}wi{\k a}tkowski in [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 119 (1993), 187--197].

On uniform summability

Let $\mathscr{A}$ be a nonempty set of infinite matrices of linear operators between two topological vector spaces. We show that a sequence is uniformly $\mathscr{A}$-summable if and only if it is $B$-summable for all matrices $B$ of linear operators such that the $n$th row of $B$ is the $n$th row for some $A \in \mathscr{A}$. This extends the main result of Bell in [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 38 (1973), 548--552]. We also provide several applications including uniform versions of Silverman--Toeplitz theorem, characterizations of almost regular matrices, uniform superior limits, and inclusion of ideal cores. Basically, our methods allow to translate ordinary results into their uniform versions, using directly the former ones.

The multi-physics analysis, design and testing of CUSP, a CubeSat mission for space weather and solar flares x-ray polarimetry

The space-based CUbesat Solar Polarimeter (CUSP) mission aims to measure the linear polarization of solar flares in the hard X-ray band by means of a Compton scattering polarimeter. CUSP is a project in the framework of the Alcor Program of the Italian Space Agency aimed at developing new CubeSat missions. As part of CUSP's Phase B study, which began in December 2024 and will last one year, we present the current development status of the design solutions adopted for the mission's most critical multi-physics design drivers. These solutions have been formulated and applied to demonstrate compliance with system requirements at both the spacecraft and platform levels. In particular, we describe the mechanical design of each structural component, the results of static, dynamic finite element analyses, and a proposal for topological optimization of the interface between the platform and payload and some fixture for test, and the preliminary environmental testing campaign (e.g., vibration, shock) that will be carried out on a mechanical demonstrator.

CUbesat Solar Polarimeter (CUSP) Sensitivity Estimation and Performance Optimization using Geant4

The CUbesat Solar Polarimeter (CUSP) aims to measure the linear polarization of solar flares in the 25-100 keV X-ray band using a Compton scattering polarimeter. CUSP will allow us to study the magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration in the flaring magnetic structures of our star by providing high-sensitivity polarization measurements. CUSP is a project in the framework of the Alcor Program of the Italian Space Agency aimed to develop innovative CubeSat technologies and missions. As part of CUSPs Phase B study, which began in December 2024 and will continue for one year, we present the development status of the Geant4 based simulator to accurately simulate the detectors response and initial results on the sensitivity of the instrument. Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation is used to assess the physical interactions of the source photons with the detector and the passive materials. We implemented a detailed CUSP Mass Model within Geant4 to simulate and estimate the instruments sensitivity, correcting the geometric effects of the instrument. We also evaluated the effect of backscattering shielding on the sensitivity to optimize the mass model of the instrument.

Prototype Development and Calibration of the CUbesat Solar Polarimeter (CUSP)

The space-based CUbesat Solar Polarimeter (CUSP) mission aims to measure the linear polarization of solar flares in the hard X-ray band by means of a Compton scattering polarimeter. CUSP will allow to study the magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration in the flaring magnetic structures of our star with its unprecedented sensitivity to solar flare polarization. CUSP is a project in the framework of the Alcor Program of the Italian Space Agency aimed to develop new CubeSat missions. It has been proposed as a constellation of a two Cubesat mission to monitor the Sun for Space Weather, and will proceed with a single-satellite asset in its baseline implementation. In the frame of CUSP's Phase B study, that started in December 2024 for a 1-year period, we present the development status of this dual-phase polarimeter. Preliminary laboratory results using two chains of acquisition will be discussed. The first chain of acquisition, based on the Hamamatsu R7600 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes coupled to plastic scintillator bars and read out by the MAROC-3A ASIC, is used to detect the Compton scattering of incoming photons. On the other hand, GAGG crystals coupled to avalanche photo-diodes with a readout based on the SKIROC-2A ASIC are used to absorb the scattered photons. By reconstructing the azimuthal scattering direction for many incoming photons, one can infer the linear polarization degree and angle of the source. We will discuss the calibration results obtained with our prototype detector by using well-known radioactive isotopes, allowing us to assess the performances of our detector over the full 25-100 keV energy range.

Study of the HV power supply modules for the CUbesat Solar Polarimeter (CUSP)

The CUbesat Solar Polarimeter (CUSP) project is a CubeSat mission orbiting the Earth aimed to measure the linear polarization of solar flares in the hard X-ray band by means of a Compton scattering polarimeter. CUSP will allow to study the magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration in the flaring magnetic structures of our star. CUSP is a project in the framework of the Alcor Program of the Italian Space Agency aimed to develop new CubeSat missions. CUSP undergoing the Phase B started in December 2024 that will last for 12 month. The Compton polarimeter of the CUSP payload performs coincidence measurements between plastic scintilaltors and GaGG(Ce) crystals to derive the polarization of X-rays. These sensors are readout by Multi Anode Photomultiplier Tubes (MAPMTs) and Avalanche Photodiodes (APDs) respectively. Both sensors need an HV power supply up to -1~kV (for the MAPMT) and +500~V (for the APD). We tested precision regulated High Voltage DC/DC Converters by HVM Technology Inc. with Sub-Miniature Case Size ($0.85''\times0.85''\times0.60''$) of the SMHV series. These modules are compact and suited for CubeSat missions.

On the complexity of upper frequently hypercyclic vectors

Given a continuous linear operator $T:X\to X$, where $X$ is a topological vector space, let $\mathrm{UFHC}(T)$ be the set of upper frequently hypercyclic vectors, that is, the set of vectors $x \in X$ such that $\{n \in ω: T^nx \in U\}$ has positive upper asymptotic density for all nonempty open sets $U\subseteq X$. It is known that $\mathrm{UFHC}(T)$ is a $G_{δσδ}$-set which is either empty or contains a dense $G_δ$-set. Using a purely topological proof, we improve it by showing that $\mathrm{UFHC}(T)$ is always a $G_{δσ}$-set. Bonilla and Grosse-Erdmann asked in [Rev. Mat. Complut. \textbf{31} (2018), 673--711] whether $\mathrm{UFHC}(T)$ is always a $G_δ$-set. We answer such question in the negative, by showing that there exists a continuous linear operator $T$ for which $\mathrm{UFHC}(T)$ is not a $F_{σδ}$-set (hence not $G_δ$). In addition, we study the [non-]equivalence between (the ideal versions of) upper frequently hypercyclicity in the product topology and upper frequently hypercyclicity in the norm topology.

On generalized limits and ultrafilters

Given an ideal $\mathcal{I}$ on $ω$, we denote by $\mathrm{SL}(\mathcal{I})$ the family of positive normalized linear functionals on $\ell_\infty$ which assign value $0$ to all characteristic sequences of sets in $\mathcal{I}$. We show that every element of $\mathrm{SL}(\mathcal{I})$ is a Choquet average of certain ultrafilter limit functionals. Also, we prove that the diameter of $\mathrm{SL}(\mathcal{I})$ is $2$ if and only if $\mathcal{I}$ is not maximal, and that the latter claim can be considerably strengthened if $\mathcal{I}$ is meager. Lastly, we provide several applications: for instance, recovering a result of Freedman in [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 13 (1981), 224--228], we show that the family of bounded sequences for which all functionals in $\mathrm{SL}(\mathcal{I})$ assign the same value coincides with the closed vector space of bounded $\mathcal{I}$-convergent sequences.

On maldistributed sequences and meager ideals

We show that an ideal $\mathcal{I}$ on $ω$ is meager if and only if the set of sequences $(x_n)$ taking values in a Polish space $X$ for which all elements of $X$ are $\mathcal{I}$-cluster points of $(x_n)$ is comeager. The latter condition is also known as $ν$-maldistribution, where $ν: \mathcal{P}(ω)\to \mathbb{R}$ is the $\{0,1\}$-valued submeasure defined by $ν(A)=1$ if and only if $A\notin \mathcal{I}$. It turns out that the meagerness of $\mathcal{I}$ is also equivalent to a technical condition given by Misik and Toth in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 541 (2025), 128667]. Lastly, we show that the analogue of the first part holds replacing $ν$ with $\|\cdot\|_φ$, where $φ$ is a lower semicontinuous submeasure.

Strong universality, recurrence, and analytic P-ideals in dynamical systems

Given a dynamical system $(X,T)$ and a family $\mathsf{I}\subseteq \mathcal{P}(ω)$ of "small" sets of nonnegative integers, a point $x \in X$ is said to be $\mathsf{I}$-strong universal if for each $y \in X$ there exists a subsequence $(T^nx: n \in A)$ of its orbit which is convergent to $y$ and, in addition, the set of indexes $A$ is "not small," that is, $A\notin \mathsf{I}$. An analoguous definition is given for $\mathsf{I}$-strong recurrence. In this work, we provide several structural properties and relationships between $\mathsf{I}$-strong universality, $\mathsf{I}$-strong recurrence, and the corresponding ordinary notions of $\mathsf{I}$-universality and $\mathsf{I}$-recurrence. As applications, we provide sufficient conditions which ensure the equivalence between the above notions and the property that each nonempty open set contains some cluster point of some orbit. In addition, we show that if $T$ is a homomorphism on a Fréchet space $X$ and there exists a dense set of vectors with null orbit, then for each $y \in X$ the set of all vectors $x \in X$ such that $\lim_{n \in A}T^nx=y$ for some $A\subseteq ω$ with nonzero upper asymptotic density is either empty or comeager. In the special case of linear dynamical systems on Banach spaces with a dense set of uniformly recurrent vectors, we obtain that $T$ is upper frequently hypercyclic if and only if there exists a hypercyclic vector $x \in X$ for which $\lim_{n \in A}T^nx=0$ for some $A\subseteq ω$ with nonzero upper asymptotic density.

Core equality of real sequences

Given an ideal $\mathcal{I}$ on $ω$ and a bounded real sequence $\textbf{x}$, we denote by $\text{core}_{\textbf{x}}(\mathcal{I})$ the smallest interval $[a,b]$ such that $\{n \in ω: x_n \notin [a-\varepsilon,b+\varepsilon]\} \in \mathcal{I}$ for all $\varepsilon>0$ (which corresponds to the interval $[\,\liminf \textbf{x}, \limsup \textbf{x}\,]$ if $\mathcal{I}$ is the ideal $\text{Fin}$ of finite subsets of $ω$). First, we characterize all the infinite real matrices $A$ such that $$ \text{core}_{A\textbf{x}}(\mathcal{J})=\text{core}_{\textbf{x}}(\mathcal{I}) $$ for all bounded sequences $\textbf{x}$, provided that $\mathcal{J}$ is a countably generated ideal on $ω$ and $A$ maps bounded sequences into bounded sequences. Such characterization fails if both $\mathcal{I}$ and $\mathcal{J}$ are the ideal of asymptotic density zero sets. Next, we show that such equality is possible for distinct ideals $\mathcal{I}, \mathcal{J}$, answering an open question in [J.~Math.~Anal.~Appl.~\textbf{321} (2006), 515--523]. Lastly, we prove that, if $\mathcal{J}=\text{Fin}$, the above equality holds for some matrix $A$ if and only if $\mathcal{I}=\text{Fin}$ or $\mathcal{I}=\text{Fin}\oplus \mathcal{P}(ω)$.

Borel complexity of sets of ideal limit points

Let $X$ be an uncountable Polish space and let $\mathcal{I}$ be an ideal on $ω$. A point $η\in X$ is an $\mathcal{I}$-limit point of a sequence $(x_n)$ taking values in $X$ if there exists a subsequence $(x_{k_n})$ convergent to $η$ such that the set of indexes $\{k_n: n \in ω\}\notin \mathcal{I}$. Denote by $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ the family of subsets $S\subseteq X$ such that $S$ is the set of $\mathcal{I}$-limit points of some sequence taking values in $X$ or $S$ is empty. In this paper, we study the relationships between the topological complexity of ideals $\mathcal{I}$, their combinatorial properties, and the families of sets $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ which can be attained. On the positive side, we provide several purely combinatorial (not dependind on the space $X$) characterizations of ideals $\mathcal{I}$ for the inclusions and the equalities between $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ and the Borel classes $Π^0_1$, $Σ^0_2$, and $Π^0_3$. As a consequence, we prove that if $\mathcal{I}$ is a $Π^0_4$ ideal then exactly one of the following cases holds: $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=Π^0_1$ or $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=Σ^0_2$ or $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=Σ^1_1$ (however we do not have an example of a $Π^0_4$ ideal with $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=Σ^1_1$). In addition, we provide an explicit example of a coanalytic ideal $\mathcal{I}$ for which $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=Σ^1_1$. On the negative side, we show that there are no ideals $\mathcal{I}$ such that $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=Π^0_2$ or $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})=Σ^0_3$. We conclude with several open questions.

Topological complexity of ideal limit points

Given an ideal $\mathcal{I}$ on the nonnegative integers $ω$ and a Polish space $X$, let $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ be the family of subsets $S\subseteq X$ such that $S$ is the set of $\mathcal{I}$-limit points of some sequence taking values in $X$. First, we show that $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ may attain arbitrarily large Borel complexity. Second, we prove that if $\mathcal{I}$ is a $G_{δσ}$-ideal then all elements of $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ are closed. Third, we show that if $\mathcal{I}$ is a simply coanalytic ideal and $X$ is first countable, then every element of $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ is simply analytic. Lastly, we studied certain structural properties and the topological complexity of minimal ideals $\mathcal{I}$ for which $\mathscr{L}(\mathcal{I})$ contains a given set.
