A characterization of switched linear control systems with finite L 2 -gain

Motivated by an open problem posed by J.P. Hespanha, we extend the notion of Barabanov norm and extremal trajectory to classes of switching signals that are not closed under concatenation. We use these tools to prove that the finiteness of the L2-gain is equivalent, for a large set of switched linear control systems, to the condition that the generalized spectral radius associated with any minimal realization of the original switched system is smaller than one.

Controllability of spin-boson systems

In this paper we study the so-called spin-boson system, namely {a two-level system} in interaction with a distinguished mode of a quantized bosonic field. We give a brief description of the controlled Rabi and Jaynes--Cummings models and we discuss their appearance in the mathematics and physics literature. We then study the controllability of the Rabi model when the control is an external field acting on the bosonic part. Applying geometric control techniques to the Galerkin approximation and using perturbation theory to guarantee non-resonance of the spectrum of the drift operator, we prove approximate controllability of the system, for almost every value of the interaction parameter.

Approximate controllability via adiabatic techniques for the three-inputs controlled Schr{ö}dinger equation

We consider a system described by a controlled bilinear Schr{ö}dinger equation with three external inputs. We provide a constructive method to approximately steer the system from a given energy level to a superposition of energy levels corresponding to a given probability distribution. The method is based on adiabatic techniques and works if the spectrum of the Hamiltonian admits eigenvalue intersections, with respect to variations of the controls, and if the latter are conical. We provide sharp estimates of the relation between the error and the controllability time, and we show how to improve these estimates by selecting special control paths.

Geometric and asymptotic properties associated with linear switched systems

Consider continuous-time linear switched systems on R^n associated with compact convex sets of matrices. When the system is irreducible and the largest Lyapunov exponent is equal to zero, there always exists a Barabanov norm (i.e. a norm which is non increasing along trajectories of the linear switched system together with extremal trajectories starting at every point, that is trajectories of the linear switched system with constant norm). This paper deals with two sets of issues: (a) properties of Barabanov norms such as uniqueness up to homogeneity and strict convexity; (b) asymptotic behaviour of the extremal solutions of the linear switched system. Regarding Issue (a), we provide partial answers and propose four open problems motivated by appropriate examples. As for Issue (b), we establish, when n = 3, a Poincaré-Bendixson theorem under a regularity assumption on the set of matrices defining the system. Moreover, we revisit the noteworthy result of N.E. Barabanov [5] dealing with the linear switched system on R^3 associated with a pair of Hurwitz matrices {A, A + bcT }. We first point out a fatal gap in Barabanov's argument in connection with geometric features associated with a Barabanov norm. We then provide partial answers relative to the asymptotic behavior of this linear switched system.

Local properties of almost-Riemannian structures in dimension 3

A 3D almost-Riemannian manifold is a generalized Riemannian manifold defined locally by 3 vector fields that play the role of an orthonormal frame, but could become collinear on some set $\Zz$ called the singular set. Under the Hormander condition, a 3D almost-Riemannian structure still has a metric space structure, whose topology is compatible with the original topology of the manifold. Almost-Riemannian manifolds were deeply studied in dimension 2. In this paper we start the study of the 3D case which appear to be reacher with respect to the 2D case, due to the presence of abnormal extremals which define a field of directions on the singular set. We study the type of singularities of the metric that could appear generically, we construct local normal forms and we study abnormal extremals. We then study the nilpotent approximation and the structure of the corresponding small spheres. We finally give some preliminary results about heat diffusion on such manifolds.

Adiabatic control of the Schrödinger equation via conical intersections of the eigenvalues

In this paper we present a constructive method to control the bilinear Schrödinger equation via two controls. The method is based on adiabatic techniques and works if the spectrum of the Hamiltonian admits eigenvalue intersections, and if the latter are conical (as it happens generically). We provide sharp estimates of the relation between the error and the controllability time.

Optimal control models of the goal-oriented human locomotion

In recent papers it has been suggested that human locomotion may be modeled as an inverse optimal control problem. In this paradigm, the trajectories are assumed to be solutions of an optimal control problem that has to be determined. We discuss the modeling of both the dynamical system and the cost to be minimized, and we analyze the corresponding optimal synthesis. The main results describe the asymptotic behavior of the optimal trajectories as the target point goes to infinity.

Generic controllability properties for the bilinear Schrödinger equation

In [15] we proposed a set of sufficient conditions for the approximate controllability of a discrete-spectrum bilinear Schrödinger equation. These conditions are expressed in terms of the controlled potential and of the eigenpairs of the uncontrolled Schrödinger operator. The aim of this paper is to show that these conditions are generic with respect to the uncontrolled and the controlled potential, denoted respectively by $V$ and $W$. More precisely, we prove that the Schrödinger equation is approximately controllable generically with respect to $W$ when $V$ is fixed and also generically with respect to $V$ when $W$ is fixed and non-constant. The results are obtained by analytic perturbation arguments and through the study of asymptotic properties of eigenfunctions.

Detection of Gaussian signals via hexagonal sensor networks

This paper considers a special case of the problem of identifying a static scalar signal, depending on the location, using a planar network of sensors in a distributed fashion. Motivated by the application to monitoring wild-fires spreading and pollutants dispersion, we assume the signal to be Gaussian in space. Using a network of sensors positioned to form a regular hexagonal tessellation, we prove that each node can estimate the parameters of the Gaussian from local measurements. Moreover, we study the sensitivity of these estimates to additive errors affecting the measurements. Finally, we show how a consensus algorithm can be designed to fuse the local estimates into a shared global estimate, effectively compensating the measurement errors.

A note on stability conditions for planar switched systems

This paper is concerned with the stability problem for the planar linear switched system $\dot x(t)=u(t)A_1x(t)+(1-u(t))A_2x(t)$, where the real matrices $A_1,A_2\in \R^{2\times 2}$ are Hurwitz and $u(\cdot) [0,\infty[\to\{0,1\}$ is a measurable function. We give coordinate-invariant necessary and sufficient conditions on $A_1$ and $A_2$ under which the system is asymptotically stable for arbitrary switching functions $u(\cdot)$. The new conditions unify those given in previous papers and are simpler to be verified since we are reduced to study 4 cases instead of 20. Most of the cases are analyzed in terms of the function $Γ(A_1,A_2)={1/2}(\tr(A_1) \tr(A_2)- \tr(A_1A_2))$.

Controllability of the discrete-spectrum Schrodinger equation driven by an external field

We prove approximate controllability of the bilinear Schrödinger equation in the case in which the uncontrolled Hamiltonian has discrete non-resonant spectrum. The results that are obtained apply both to bounded or unbounded domains and to the case in which the control potential is bounded or unbounded. The method relies on finite-dimensional techniques applied to the Galerkin approximations and permits, in addition, to get some controllability properties for the density matrix. Two examples are presented: the harmonic oscillator and the 3D well of potential, both controlled by suitable potentials.

Limit Time Optimal Synthesis for a Control-Affine System on $S^2$

For $α\in(0,π/2)$, let $(Σ)_α$ be the control system $\dot{x}=(F+uG)x$, where $x$ belongs to the two-dimensional unit sphere $S^2$, $u\in [-1,1]$ and $F,G$ are $3\times3$ skew-symmetric matrices generating rotations with perpendicular axes of respective length $\cos(α)$ and $\sin(α)$. In this paper, we study the time optimal synthesis (TOS) from the north pole $(0,0,1)^T$ associated to $(Σ)_α$, as the parameter $α$ tends to zero. We first prove that the TOS is characterized by a ``two-snakes'' configuration on the whole $S^2$, except for a neighborhood $U_α$ of the south pole $(0,0,-1)^T$ of diameter at most $Ø(α)$. We next show that, inside $U_α$, the TOS depends on the relationship between $r(α):=π/2α-[π/2α]$ and$α$. More precisely, we characterize three main relationships, by considering sequences $(α_k)_{k\geq 0}$ satisfying $(a)$$r(α_k)=\bar{r}$; $(b)$ $r(α_k)=Cα_k$ and $(c)$ $r(α_k)=0$, where $\bar{r}\in (0,1)$ and $C>0$. In each case, we describe the TOS and provide, after a suitable rescaling, the limiting behavior, as $α$ tends to zero, of the corresponding TOS inside $U_α$.

Time Minimal Trajectories for a Spin 1/2 Particle in a Magnetic Field

In this paper we consider the minimum time population transfer problem for the $z$-component of the spin of a (spin 1/2) particle driven by a magnetic field, controlled along the x axis, with bounded amplitude. On the Bloch sphere (i.e. after a suitable Hopf projection), this problem can be attacked with techniques of optimal syntheses on 2-D manifolds. Let $(-E,E)$ be the two energy levels, and $|Ω(t)|\leq M$ the bound on the field amplitude. For each couple of values $E$ and $M$, we determine the time optimal synthesis starting from the level $-E$ and we provide the explicit expression of the time optimal trajectories steering the state one to the state two, in terms of a parameter that can be computed solving numerically a suitable equation. For $M/E<<1$, every time optimal trajectory is bang-bang and in particular the corresponding control is periodic with frequency of the order of the resonance frequency $ω_R=2E$. On the other side, for $M/E>1$, the time optimal trajectory steering the state one to the state two is bang-bang with exactly one switching. Fixed $E$ we also prove that for $M\to\infty$ the time needed to reach the state two tends to zero. In the case $M/E>1$ there are time optimal trajectories containing a singular arc. Finally we compare these results with some known results of Khaneja, Brockett and Glaser and with those obtained by controlling the magnetic field both on the $x$ and $y$ directions (or with one external field, but in the rotating wave approximation). As byproduct we prove that the qualitative shape of the time optimal synthesis presents different patterns, that cyclically alternate as $M/E\to0$, giving a partial proof of a conjecture formulated in a previous paper.

Time Minimal Trajectories for two-level Quantum Systems with Drift

On a two-level quantum system driven by an external field, we consider the population transfer problem from the first to the second level, minimizing the time of transfer, with bounded field amplitude. For each values of $E$ and $M$, we provide the explicit expression of the time optimal trajectory steering the state one to the state two in terms of a parameter that should be computed numerically. For $M< E$ the time optimal trajectory steering the state one to the state two is bang-bang with exactly one switching. Fixed $E$ we also prove that for $M\to\infty$ the time needed to reach the state two tends to zero. Finally we compare these results with some known results of Khaneja, Brockett and Glaser and with those obtained in the Rotating Wave Approximation.

Common Polynomial Lyapunov Functions for Linear Switched Systems

In this paper, we consider linear switched systems $\dot x(t)=A_{u(t)} x(t)$, $x\in\R^n$, $u\in U$, and the problem of asymptotic stability for arbitrary switching functions, uniform with respect to switching ({\bf UAS} for short). We first prove that, given a {\bf UAS} system, it is always possible to build a common polynomial Lyapunov function. Then our main result is that the degree of that common polynomial Lyapunov function is not uniformly bounded over all the {\bf UAS} systems. This result answers a question raised by Dayawansa and Martin. A generalization to a class of piecewise-polynomial Lyapunov functions is given.
