String duals of two-dimensional (4,4) supersymmetric gauge theories

We study duals to field theories in two dimensions with N=(4,4) SUSY. The string backgrounds reproduce certain non-perturbative aspects of the dual field theory with a large number of colors N_c and a tunable number of flavors N_f. Different aspects of the two-dimensional field theory are discussed, among them the running of gauge couplings, the spectrum of mesons in Higgs and Coulomb branches, entanglement entropy and the non-relativistic version of our string backgrounds.

The supergravity dual of 3d supersymmetric gauge theories with unquenched flavors

We obtain the supergravity dual of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions with a large number of unquenched massless flavors. The geometries found are obtained by solving the equations of motion of supergravity coupled to a suitable continuous distribution of flavor branes. The background obtained preserves two supersymmetries. We find that when N_c\ge 2N_f the behavior of the solutions is compatible with having an asymptotically free dual gauge theory with dynamical quarks. On the contrary, when N_c<2N_f the theory develops a Landau pole in the UV. We also find a new family of (unflavored) backgrounds generated by D5-branes that wrap a three-cycle of a cone with G_2 holonomy.

On the M-theory description of supersymmetric gluodynamics

We study the stringy description of N=1 supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory on R^{1,2} X S^1. Our description is based on the known Klebanov-Strassler and Maldacena-Nunez solutions, properly modified to account for the compact dimension. The presence of this circle turns out to be a non trivial modification and it leads us to consider the up-lifted eleven dimensional solution. We discuss some of its properties. Perhaps the most interesting one is that extra BPS M-branes are present. These generate a non-perturbative superpotential that we explicitly compute. Our findings, besides their interest in the gauge-string correspondence, may also have applications in the cosmological KKLT and KKLMMT scenarios.

Fractional branes and the gravity dual of partial supersymmetry breaking

In type IIB string theory, we consider fractional D3-branes in the orbifold background dual to four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We find the gravitational dual description of the generation of a non-trivial field theory potential on the Coulomb branch. When the orbifold singularity is softened to the smooth Eguchi-Hanson space, the resulting potential induces spontaneous partial supersymmetry breaking. We study the N=1 theory arising in those vacua and we see how the resolved conifold geometry emerges in this way. It will be natural to identify the size of the blown-up two-cycle of that geometry with the inverse mass of the adjoint chiral scalar. We finally discuss the issue of geometric transition in this context.

Gaugino condensate and phases of N=1 super Yang-Mills theories

I consider N=1 U(N) gauge theory with matter in the adjoint, fundamental and anti-fundamental representations. Focusing on the equations defining the Riemann surface that describes the quantum theory, the gaugino condensates (and related superpotentials) are calculated in the limit of SU(N) gauge group, both in the pure theory and in the presence of matter. In the case without fundamental matter it is investigated the structure of the space of vacua. In particular it is discussed how different vacua can be related, in a way which finally helps to count them.
