Quantitative stability of a nonlocal Sobolev inequality

In this paper, we study the quantitative stability of the nonlocal Soblev inequality \begin{equation*} S_{HL}\left(\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}\big(|x|^{-μ} \ast |u|^{2_μ^{\ast}}\big)|u|^{2_μ^{\ast}} dx\right)^{\frac{1}{2_μ^{\ast}}}\leq\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|\nabla u|^2 dx , \quad \forall~u\in \mathcal{D}^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^N), \end{equation*} where $2_μ^{\ast}=\frac{2N-μ}{N-2}$ and $S_{HL}$ is a positive constant depending only on $N$ and $μ$. For $N\geq3$, and $0<μ<N$, it is well-known that, up to translation and scaling, the nonlocal Soblev inequality has a unique extremal function $W[ξ,λ]$ which is positive and radially symmetric. We first prove a result of quantitative stability of the nonlocal Soblev inequality with the level of gradients. Secondly, we also establish the stability of profile decomposition to the Euler-Lagrange equation of the above inequality for nonnegative functions. Finally we study the stability of the nonlocal Soblev inequality \begin{equation*} \Big\|\nabla u-\sum_{i=1}^κ\nabla W[ξ_i,λ_i]\Big\|_{L^2}\leq C\Big\|Δu+\left(\frac{1}{|x|^μ}\ast |u|^{2_μ^{\ast}}\right)|u|^{2_μ^{\ast}-2}u\Big\|_{(\mathcal{D}^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^N))^{-1}} \end{equation*} with the parameter region $κ\geq2$, $3\leq N<6-μ$, $μ\in(0,N)$ satisfying $0<μ\leq4$, or dimension $N\geq3$ and $κ=1$, $μ\in(0,N)$ satisfying $0<μ\leq4$.

Lusternik-Schnirelman and Morse theory for the Van der Waals-Cahn-Hilliard equation with volume constraint

We give a multiplicity result for solutions of the Van der Waals-Cahn-Hilliard two-phase transition equation with volume constraints on a closed Riemannian manifold. Our proof employs some results from the classical Lusternik--Schnirelman and Morse theory, together with a technique, the so-called \emph{photography method}, which allows us to obtain lower bounds on the number of solutions in terms of topological invariants of the underlying manifold. The setup for the photography method employs recent results from Riemannian isoperimetry for small volumes.

Multiplicity of solutions to the multiphasic Allen-Cahn-Hilliard system with a small volume constraint on closed parallelizable manifolds

We prove the existence of multiple solutions to the Allen--Cahn--Hilliard (ACH) vectorial equation (with two equations) involving a triple-well (triphasic) potential with a small volume constraint on a closed parallelizable Riemannian manifold. More precisely, we find a lower bound for the number of solutions depending on some topological invariants of the underlying manifold. The phase transition potential is considered to have a finite set of global minima, where it also vanishes, and a subcritical growth at infinity. Our strategy is to employ the Lusternik--Schnirelmann and infinite-dimensional Morse theories for the vectorial energy functional. To this end, we exploit that the associated ACH energy $Γ$-converges to the weighted multi-perimeter for clusters, which combined with some deep theorems from isoperimetric theory yields the suitable setup to apply the photography method. Along the way, the lack of a closed analytic expression for the multi-isoperimetric function for clusters imposes a delicate issue. Furthermore, using a transversality theorem, we also show the genericity of the set of metrics for which solutions to the ACH system are nondegenerate.

Global bifurcation for a class of nonlinear ODEs

We briefly survey global bifurcation techniques, and illustrate their use by finding multiple positive periodic solutions to a class of second order quasilinear ODEs related to the Yamabe problem. As an application, we give a bifurcation-theoretic proof of a classical nonuniqueness result for conformal metrics with constant scalar curvature, that was independently discovered by O. Kobayashi and R. Schoen in the 1980s.

Full Laplace spectrum of distance spheres in symmetric spaces of rank one

We use Lie-theoretic methods to explicitly compute the full spectrum of the Laplace--Beltrami operator on homogeneous spheres which occur as geodesic distance spheres in (compact or noncompact) symmetric spaces of rank one, and provide a single unified formula for all cases. As an application, we find all resonant radii for distance spheres in the compact case, i.e., radii where there is bifurcation of embedded constant mean curvature spheres, and show that distance spheres are stable and locally rigid in the noncompact case.

Harmonic-curvature warped products over surfaces

For warped products with harmonic curvature, nonconstant warping functions $ϕ$, and compact two-dimensional bases $(M,h)$, we establish a dichotomy: either the Gaussian curvature $K$ of the metric $g=ϕ^{-2}h$ is constant and negative, or $ϕ$ equals a specific elementary function of $K$, also depending on the dimension $p$ and Einstein constant $\varepsilon$ of the fibre. In both cases the fibre must be an Einstein manifold with $p>1$ and $\varepsilon>0$, while the function $f=ϕ^{p/2}$ satisfies a Yamabe-type second-order differential equation on $(M,g)$. We prove that both possibilities are realized on every closed orientable surface of genus greater than $1$, and in the latter case -- which also occurs on the $2$-sphere and real projective plane -- the metrics in question constitute uncountably many distinct homothety types.

The first eigenvalue of a homogeneous CROSS

We provide explicit formulae for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a compact rank one symmetric space (CROSS) endowed with any homogeneous metric. As consequences, we prove that homogeneous metrics on CROSSes are isospectral if and only if they are isometric, and also discuss their stability (or lack thereof) as solutions to the Yamabe problem.

Subspace foliations and collapse of closed flat manifolds

We study relations between certain totally geodesic foliations of a closed flat manifold and its collapsed Gromov-Hausdorff limits. Our main results explicitly identify such collapsed limits as flat orbifolds, and provide algebraic and geometric criteria to determine whether they are singular.

Maximally-warped metrics with harmonic curvature

We describe the local structure of Riemannian manifolds with harmonic curvature which admit a maximum number, in a well-defined sense, of local warped-product decompositions, and at the same time their Ricci tensor has, at some point, only simple eigenvalues. We also prove that, in every given dimension greater than two, the local-isometry types of such manifolds form a finite-dimensional moduli space, and a nonempty open subset of this moduli space is realized by locally irreducible complete metrics which are neither Ricci-parallel, nor -- for dimensions greater than three -- conformally flat.

Van der Waals--Allen--Cahn--Hilliard equation with a volume constraint

We give multiplicity results for the solutions of a nonlinear elliptic equation, with an asymmetric double well potential of Van der Waals-Allen--Cahn--Hilliard type, satisfying a linear volume constraint, on a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\mathds R^N$. The number of solutions is estimated in terms of topological and homological invariants of the underlying domain $Ω$.

Flat manifolds and reducibility

Hiss and Szczepański proved in 1991 that the holonomy group of any compact flat Riemannian manifold, of dimension at least two, acts reducibly on the rational span of the Euclidean lattice associated with the manifold via the first Bieberbach theorem. Geometrically, their result states that such a manifold must admit a nonzero proper parallel distribution with compact leaves. We study algebraic and geometric properties of the sublattice-spanned holonomy-invariant subspaces that exist due to the above theorem, and of the resulting compact-leaf foliations of compact flat manifolds. The class consisting of the former subspaces, in addition to being closed under spans and intersections, also turns out to admit (usually nonorthogonal) complements. As for the latter foliations, we provide descriptions, first -- and foremost -- of the intrinsic geometry of their generic leaves in terms of that of the original flat manifold and, secondly -- as an essentially obvious afterthought -- of the leaf-space orbifold. The general conclusions are then illustrated by examples in the form of generalized Klein bottles.

Nonuniqueness of conformal metrics with constant $Q$-curvature

We establish several nonuniqueness results for the problem of finding complete conformal metrics with constant (fourth-order) $Q$-curvature on compact and noncompact manifolds of dimension $\geq5$. Infinitely many branches of metrics with constant $Q$-curvature, but without constant scalar curvature, are found to bifurcate from Berger metrics on spheres and complex projective spaces. These provide examples of nonisometric metrics with the same constant negative $Q$-curvature in a conformal class with negative Yamabe invariant, echoing the absence of a Maximum Principle. We also discover infinitely many complete metrics with constant $Q$-curvature conformal to $\mathbb S^m\times\mathbb R^d$, $m\geq4$, $d\geq1$, and $\mathbb S^m\times\mathbb H^d$, $2\leq d\leq m-3$; which give infinitely many solutions to the singular constant $Q$-curvature problem on round spheres $\mathbb S^n$ blowing up along a round subsphere $\mathbb S^k$, for all $0\leq k<(n-4)/2$.

Multiple orthogonal geodesic chords in nonconvex Riemannian disks using obstacles

We use nonsmooth critical point theory and the theory of geodesics with obstacle to show a multiplicity result about orthogonal geodesic chords in a Riemannian manifold (with boundary) which is homeomorphic to an $N$-disk. This applies to brake orbits in a potential well of a natural Hamiltonian system, providing a further step towards the proof of a celebrated conjecture by Seifert.

Teichmüller theory and collapse of flat manifolds

We provide an algebraic description of the Teichmüller space and moduli space of flat metrics on a closed manifold or orbifold and study its boundary, which consists of (isometry classes of) flat orbifolds to which the original object may collapse. It is also shown that every closed flat orbifold can be obtained by collapsing closed flat manifolds, and the collapsed limits of closed flat 3-manifolds are classified.

Deformations of free boundary CMC hypersurfaces

We study deformations of free boundary constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurfaces whose Jacobi operator is degenerate due to symmetries of the ambient space. The value of the mean curvature and the ambient metric are allowed to vary simultaneously, provided that the infinitesimal ambient symmetries change smoothly. We discuss applications to free boundary CMC disks and Delaunay annuli in the unit ball of a space form.

Kähler manifolds with geodesic holomorphic gradients

A vector field on a Riemannian manifold is called geodesic if its integral curves are reparametrized geodesics. We classify compact Kähler manifolds admitting nontrivial real-holomorphic geodesic gradient vector fields that satisfy an additional integrability condition. They are all biholomorphic to bundles of complex projective spaces.

Infinitely many solutions to the Yamabe problem on noncompact manifolds

We establish the existence of infinitely many complete metrics with constant scalar curvature on prescribed conformal classes on certain noncompact product manifolds. These include products of closed manifolds with constant positive scalar curvature and simply-connected symmetric spaces of noncompact or Euclidean type; in particular, $\mathbb S^m \times\mathbb R^d$, $m\geq2$, $d\geq1$, and $\mathbb S^m\times\mathbb H^d$, $2\leq d<m$. As a consequence, we obtain infinitely many periodic solutions to the singular Yamabe problem on $\mathbb S^m\setminus\mathbb S^k$, for all $0\leq k<(m-2)/2$, the maximal range where nonuniqueness is possible. We also show that all Bieberbach groups in $Iso(\mathbb R^d)$ are periods of bifurcating branches of solutions to the Yamabe problem on $\mathbb S^m\times\mathbb R^d$, $m\geq2$, $d\geq1$.
