On the semi-Riemannian bumpy metric theorem

We prove the semi-Riemannian bumpy metric theorem using equivariant variational genericity. The theorem states that, on a given compact manifold $M$, the set of semi-Riemannian metrics that admit only nondegenerate closed geodesics is generic relatively to the $C^k$-topology, $k=2,...,\infty$, in the set of metrics of a given index on $M$. A higher order genericity Riemannian result of Klingenberg and Takens is extended to semi-Riemannian geometry.

Pseudo focal points along Lorentzian geodesics and Morse index

Given a Lorentzian manifold $(M,g)$, a geodesic $γ$ in $M$ and a timelike Jacobi field $\mathcal Y$ along $γ$, we introduce a special class of instants along $γ$ that we call $\mathcal Y$-pseudo conjugate (or focal relatively to some initial orthogonal submanifold). We prove that the $\mathcal Y$-pseudo conjugate instants form a finite set, and their number equals the Morse index of (a suitable restriction of) the index form. This gives a Riemannian-like Morse index theorem. As special cases of the theory, we will consider geodesics in stationary and static Lorentzian manifolds, where the Jacobi field $\mathcal Y$ is obtained as the restriction of a globally defined timelike Killing vector field.

Periodic Geodesics and Geometry of Compact Lorentzian Manifolds with a Killing Vector Field

We study the geometry and the periodic geodesics of a compact Lorentzian manifold that has a Killing vector field which is timelike somewhere. Using a compactness argument for subgroups of the isometry group, we prove the existence of one timelike non self-intersecting periodic geodesic. If the Killing vector field is never vanishing, then there are at least two distinct periodic geodesics; as a special case, compact stationary manifolds have at least two periodic timelike geodesics. We also discuss some properties of the topology of such manifolds. In particular, we show that a compact manifold $M$ admits a Lorentzian metric with a never vanishing Killing vector field which is timelike somewhere if and only if $M$ admits a smooth circle action without fixed points.

Genericity of nondegenerate critical points and Morse geodesic functionals

We consider a family of variational problems on a Hilbert manifold parameterized by an open subset of a Banach manifold, and we discuss the genericity of the nondegeneracy condition for the critical points. Based on an idea of B. White, we prove an abstract genericity result that employs the infinite dimensional Sard--Smale theorem. Applications are given by proving the genericity of metrics without degenerate geodesics between fixed endpoints in general (non compact) semi-Riemannian manifolds, in orthogonally split semi-Riemannian manifolds and in globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds. We discuss the genericity property also in stationary Lorentzian manifolds.

On a formula for the spectral flow and its applications

We consider a continuous path of bounded symmetric Fredholm bilinear forms with arbitrary endpoints on a real Hilbert space, and we prove a formula that gives the spectral flow of the path in terms of the spectral flow of the restriction to a finite codimensional closed subspace. We also discuss the case of restrictions to a continuous path of finite codimensional closed subspaces. As an application of the formula, we introduce the notion of spectral flow for a periodic semi-Riemannian geodesic, and we compute its value in terms of the Maslov index.

Spectral flow and iteration of closed semi-Riemannian geodesics

We introduce the notion of spectral flow along a periodic semi-Riemannian geodesic, as a suitable substitute of the Morse index in the Riemannian case. We study the growth of the spectral flow along a closed geodesic under iteration, determining its asymptotic behavior.

Iteration of closed geodesics in stationary Lorentzian manifolds

Following the lines of a celebrated result by R. Bott (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 9, 1956) we study the Morse index of the iterated of a closed geodesic in stationary Lorentzian manifolds, or, more generally, of a closed Lorentzian geodesic that admits a timelike periodic Jacobi field. Given one such closed geodesic $γ$, we prove the existence of a locally constant integer valued map $Λ_γ$ on the unit circle with the property that the Morse index of the iterated $γ^N$ is equal, up to a correction term $ε_γ\in\{0,1\}$, to the sum of the values of $Λ_γ$ at the $N$-th roots of unity. The discontinuities of $Λ_γ$ occur at a finite number of points of the unit circle, that are special eigenvalues of the linearized Poincaré map of $γ$. We discuss some applications of the theory.

An existence theorem for G-structure preserving affine immersions

We prove an existence result for local and global G-structure preserving affine immersions between affine manifolds. Several examples are discussed in the context of Riemannian and semi-Riemannian geometry, including the case of isometric immersions into Lie groups endowed with a left-invariant metric, and the case of isometric immersions into products of space forms.

The single-leaf Frobenius Theorem with Applications

Using the notion of Levi form of a smooth distribution, we discuss the local and the global problem of existence of one horizontal section of a smooth vector bundle endowed with a horizontal distribution. The analysis will lead to the formulation of a "one-leaf" analogue of the classical Frobenius integrability theorem in elementary differential geometry. Several applications of the result will be discussed. First, we will give a characterization of symmetric connections arising as Levi-Civita connections of semi-Riemannian metric tensors. Second, we will prove a general version of the classical Cartan-Ambrose-Hicks Theorem giving conditions on the existence of an affine map with prescribed differential at one point between manifolds endowed with connections.

Connections compatible with tensors. A characterization of left-invariant Levi--Civita connections in Lie groups

Symmetric connections that are compatible with semi-Riemannian metrics can be characterized using an existence result for an integral leaf of a (possibly non integrable) distribution. In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a left-invariant connection on a Lie group to be the Levi-Civita connection of some semi-Riemannian metric on the group. As a special case, we will consider constant connections in $\R^n$.

Conjugate points and Maslov index in locally symmetric semi-Riemannian manifolds

We study the singularities of the exponential map in semi Riemannian locally symmetric manifolds. Conjugate points along geodesics depend only on real negative eigenvalues of the curvature tensor, and their contribution to the Maslov index of the geodesic is computed explicitly. We prove that degeneracy of conjugate points, which is a phenomenon that can only occur in semi-Riemannian geometry, is caused in the locally symmetric case by the lack of diagonalizability of the curvature tensor. The case of Lie groups endowed with a bi-invariant metric is studied in some detail, and conditions are given for the lack of local injectivity of the exponential map around its singularities.

On the Homotopy Type of the Fredholm Lagrangian Grassmannian

In this article, we show that the Fredholm Lagrangian Grassmannian is homotopy equivalent with the space of compact perturbations of a fixed lagrangian. As a corollary, we obtain that the Maslov index with respect to a lagrangian is a isomorphism between the fundamental group of the Fredholm Lagrangian Grassmannian and the integers.

Partial Signatures and the Yoshida-Nicolaescu Theorem

In this article, we give a simple and direct proof of the Yoshida-Nicolaescu Theorem in a more general context by using the theory of partial signatures. We do not impose the usual condition of non-degeneracy at the endpoints and use a natural definition of the Maslov index.

Orthogonal Geodesic Chords, Brake Orbits and Homoclinic Orbits in Riemannian Manifolds

The study of solutions with fixed energy of certain classes of Lagrangian (or Hamiltonian) systems is reduced, via the classical Maupertuis--Jacobi variational principle, to the study of geodesics in Riemannian manifolds. We are interested in investigating the problem of existence of brake orbits and homoclinic orbits, in which case the Maupertuis--Jacobi principle produces a Riemannian manifold with boundary and with metric degenerating in a non trivial way on the boundary. In this paper we use the classical Maupertuis--Jacobi principle to show how to remove the degeneration of the metric on the boundary, and we prove in full generality how the brake orbit and the homoclinic orbit multiplicity problem can be reduced to the study of multiplicity of orthogonal geodesic chords in a manifold with {\em regular} and {\em strongly concave} boundary.
