Fooling Yourself: how narratives shape beliefs

Decision-makers often receive information through narratives combining diagnostic evidence with details that carry no information useful for inference. We study whether such nondiagnostic details embedded in a narrative affect belief updating. In a laboratory experiment, participants repeatedly report incentivized beliefs in a Bayesian inference task. We implement three conditions with the same statistical structure: an urn problem with diagnostic colored balls and nondiagnostic white balls; the same problem presented as an investigation narrative with diagnostic clues pointing to one suspect and nondiagnostic clues pointing to neither; and the same narrative context with nondiagnostic clues replaced by no-information messages. We find that nondiagnostic details systematically pull participants' beliefs toward 0.5, the point of maximal uncertainty, despite Bayes' rule prescribing no revision. This response is strongest when nondiagnostic clues are embedded in the investigation narrative, although it also occurs in the urn condition. Conversely, it disappears when no-information messages replace nondiagnostic clues.

Revealing information -- or not -- in a social network of traders

We build upon a simple micro-founded model of asset trading proposed by Kyle (1985) to study under what conditions a trader who is privately informed of the future return of the asset may want to share her information with other traders. Despite what conventional wisdom suggests, we show that in the unique equilibrium of the game the informed trader reveals her information with positive probability. A consequence of it is that, in contrast with the corresponding no-communication benchmark, the equilibrium price need not be fully revealing of the asset's return, even if traders are risk neutral. This, in turn, has significant implications on the distribution of the social surplus. While our model initially assumes that inter-agent communication is restricted by an arbitrarily given social network, we also study which such networks arise when links are endogenously formed through traders' prior connection decisions.

Museums as Policy Tools: The Behavioral Impact of Cultural Experiences

Museums can serve as policy tools when their content is purposefully curated. We designed a framed field experiment at the Santa Maria della Scala museum in Siena that leveraged the site's historical role offering care and hospitality.Student visitors randomly assigned to a tour emphasizing this function later donated more to an NGO supporting refugee than those who followed a standard artistic itinerary, with effects concentrated among female participants. These results show that thematically targeted museum experiences can measurably boost charitable behavior toward vulnerable groups, underscoring the untapped potential of cultural institutions in behavioral public policy.

Misspecified beliefs and the evolution of peer pressure

We study the emergence of conformity preferences in an environment in which agents choose effort under heterogeneous, possibly misspecified returns, and social interactions do not directly affect material payoffs. Some agents choose effort by trading off performance and conformity to expected peer behavior. We characterize subjective best responses. For any given beliefs, an optimal and unique level of peer pressure exists and is evolutionarily stable within groups of agents sharing the same misspecification. Such a level is zero for correctly specified agents and may be positive for misspecified ones. When the efficient level of peer pressure is interior, misspecified agents choose effort equal to their true return, resulting in an equilibrium behavior that is both self-confirming and Nash, allowing the persistence of misspecifications. Peer pressure need not generate long-run allocative distortions, but it creates a perceived value of social information. In equilibrium, this value depends only on misspecification, generating scope for informational rents.

Truthful Communication and Exclusive Information Clubs

This paper studies how strategic communication shapes endogenous communication networks. Agents form costly links, observe noisy private signals about a common state, exchange cheap-talk messages with neighbors, and choose actions that reward accuracy and coordination. We show that full revelation is sustainable if and only if every connected component is a clique. We then characterize the core of the endogenous network-formation game with heterogeneous signal precisions and weakly convex linking costs. Although every network admits non-informative continuation equilibria, every core outcome is truthful and consists of assortative exclusive information clubs generated by a recursive precision-cost maximization procedure. The characterization follows from an individual payoff bound that holds uniformly over all continuation strategy profiles. Core-stable clubs need not be efficient: assortative sorting can concentrate high-precision signals excessively, so a more mixed partition may yield higher aggregate welfare.

How do you know you won't like it if you've (never) tried it? Preference discovery and data design

Consumers discover their preferences through experience, yet the sequence and composition of those experiences are often designed by firms, digital platforms, or policymakers. We introduce a ``data-design'' framework for preference discovery, in which the structure of consumption data shapes learning. Bundling generates correlated exposure across goods, so utility surprises propagate through the co-consumption network. When estimation errors are known, bias-targeted design can shut down learning and amplify misperceptions. Conversely, robust design uses only the geometry of past co-consumption: popularity-biased bundles slow learning, while correlation-breaking bundles accelerate preference discovery. The framework thus explains how dominant platforms can sustain biased demand through exposure design, and why effective regulation may need to intervene on the structure of exposure itself rather than only on prices or market shares.

Can the decoy effect increase cooperation in networks? An experiment

This paper investigates whether the decoy effect - specifically the attraction effect - can foster cooperation in social networks. In a lab experiment, we show that introducing a dominated option increases the selection of the target choice, especially in early decisions. The effect is stronger in individual settings but persists in networks despite free-riding incentives, with variation depending on the decision-maker's strategic position.

Criminal Property Rights Suppress Violence in Urban Drug Markets: Theory and Evidence from Merseyside, U.K

In this work, we provide empirical evidence on organized criminal groups' (OCGs) behavior across the Liverpool area in the U.K. (Merseyside). We find that violent crimes concerning OCGs concentrate in the areas yielding the highest revenue, while OGCs primarily control areas yielding middle or low revenue. We explain and generalize these empirical observations with a theoretical model examining how OCGs strategically select which area to exploit based on expected revenue and the presence of other OCGs. We prove our results for three OCGs analytically and extend them to larger numbers of OCGs through numerical simulations. Both approaches suggest that, when the frequency of OCG activity is sufficiently high, each OCG controls one area, while the violence between OCGs remains low across all areas. When the frequency of OCG activity reduces, violent collisions between OCGs occur in the areas yielding the highest revenue, while some OCGs retain control over the medium-revenue areas. Our results suggest important policy recommendations. Firstly, if interventions are only violence-driven, they might miss critical underlying factors. Secondly, police operations might have unintended negative externalities in other areas of a city when they target criminal property rights, like increased violence in the areas yielding the highest revenue.

Network Effects of Tariffs

We develop a model in which country-specific tariffs shape trade flows, prices, and welfare in a global economy with one homogeneous good. Trade flows form a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG), and tariffs influence not only market outcomes but also the structure of the global trade network. A numerical example illustrates how tariffs may eliminate targeted imports, divert trade flows toward third markets, expose domestic firms to intensified foreign competition abroad, reduce consumer welfare, and ultimately harm the country imposing the tariff.

The Rise and Fall of Ideas' Popularity

In the dynamic landscape of contemporary society, the popularity of ideas, opinions, and interests fluctuates rapidly. Traditional dynamical models in social sciences often fail to capture this inherent volatility, attributing changes to exogenous shocks rather than intrinsic features of the system. This paper introduces a novel, tractable model that simulates the natural rise and fall of ideas' popularity, offering a more accurate representation of real-world dynamics. Building upon the SIRS (Susceptible, Infectious, Recovered, Susceptible) epidemiological model, we incorporate a feedback mechanism that allows the recovery rate to vary dynamically based on the current state of the system. This modification reflects the cyclical nature of idea adoption and abandonment, driven by social saturation and renewed interest. Our model successfully captures the rapid and recurrent shifts in popularity, providing valuable insights into the mechanisms behind these fluctuations. This approach offers a robust framework for studying the diffusion dynamics of popular ideas, with potential applications across various fields such as marketing, technology adoption, and political movements.

Dynamic opinion updating with endogenous networks

Polarization is a well-documented phenomenon across a wide range of social issues. However, prevailing theories often compartmentalize the examination of herding behavior and opinion convergence within different contexts. In this study, we delve into the micro-foundations of how individuals strategically select reference groups, offering insight into a dynamic process where both individual opinions and the network evolve simultaneously. We base our model on two parameters: people's direct benefit from connections and their adaptability in adjusting their opinions. Our research highlights which conditions impede the network from achieving complete connectivity, resulting in enduring polarization. Notably, our model also reveals that polarization can transiently emerge during the transition towards consensus. We explore the connection between these scenarios and a critical network metric: the initial diameter, under specific conditions related to the initial distribution of opinions.

Homophily and infections: static and dynamic effects

We analyze the effect of homophily in the diffusion of a harmful state between two groups of agents that differ in immunization rates. Homophily has a very different impact on the steady state infection level (that is increasing in homophily when homophily is small, and decreasing when high), and on the cumulative number of infections generated by a deviation from the steady state (that, instead, is decreasing in homophily when homophily is small, and increasing when high). If immunization rates are endogenous, homophily has the opposite impact on the two groups. However, the sign of the group-level impact is the opposite if immunization is motivated by infection risk or by peer pressure. If motivations are group-specific, homophily can be harmful to both groups.

Efficiency and Stability in a Process of Teams Formation

Motivated by data on coauthorships in scientific publications, we analyze a team formation process that generalizes matching models and network formation models, allowing for overlapping teams of heterogeneous size. We apply different notions of stability: myopic team-wise stability, which extends to our setup the concept of pair-wise stability, coalitional stability, where agents are perfectly rational and able to coordinate, and stochastic stability, where agents are myopic and errors occur with vanishing probability. We find that, in many cases, coalitional stability in no way refines myopic team-wise stability, while stochastically stable states are feasible states that maximize the overall number of activities performed by teams.

Debunking Rumors in Networks

We study the diffusion of a true and a false message (the rumor) in a social network. Upon hearing a message, individuals may believe it, disbelieve it, or debunk it through costly verification. Whenever the truth survives in steady state, so does the rumor. Communication intensity in itself is irrelevant for relative rumor prevalence, and the effect of homophily depends on the exact verification process and equilibrium verification rates. Our model highlights that successful policies in the fight against rumors increase individuals' incentives to verify.

Epidemic dynamics with homophily, vaccination choices, and pseudoscience attitudes

We interpret attitudes towards science and pseudosciences as cultural traits that diffuse in society through communication efforts exerted by agents. We present a tractable model that allows us to study the interaction among the diffusion of an epidemic, vaccination choices, and the dynamics of cultural traits. We apply it to study the impact of homophily between pro-vaxxers and anti-vaxxers on the total number of cases (the cumulative infection). We show that, during the outbreak of a disease, homophily has the direct effect of decreasing the speed of recovery. Hence, it may increase the number of cases and make the disease endemic. The dynamics of the shares of the two cultural traits in the population is crucial in determining the sign of the total effect on the cumulative infection: more homophily is beneficial if agents are not too flexible in changing their cultural trait, is detrimental otherwise.

Covid19: unless one gets everyone to act, policies may be ineffective or even backfire

The diffusion of COVID19 is calling governments and public health authorities to interventions that limit new infections and contain the expected number of critical cases and deaths. Most of these measures rely on the compliance of people, who are asked to reduce their social contacts to a minimum. In this note we argue that individuals' adherence to prescriptions and reduction of social activity may not be efficacious if not implemented robustly on all social groups, especially on those characterized by intense mixing patterns. Actually, it is possible that, if those who have many contacts reduce them proportionally less than those who have few, then the effect of a policy could backfire: the disease would take more time to die out, up to the point that it could become endemic. In a nutshell, unless one gets everyone to act, and specifically those who have more contacts, a policy may even be counterproductive.

Learning and Selfconfirming Equilibria in Network Games

Consider a set of agents who play a network game repeatedly. Agents may not know the network. They may even be unaware that they are interacting with other agents in a network. Possibly, they just understand that their payoffs depend on an unknown state that is, actually, an aggregate of the actions of their neighbors. Each time, every agent chooses an action that maximizes her instantaneous subjective expected payoff and then updates her beliefs according to what she observes. In particular, we assume that each agent only observes her realized payoff. A steady state of the resulting dynamic is a selfconfirming equilibrium given the assumed feedback. We characterize the structure of the set of selfconfirming equilibria in the given class of network games, we relate selfconfirming and Nash equilibria, and we analyze simple conjectural best-reply paths whose limit points are selfconfirming equilibria.

Spreading of an infectious disease between different locations

The endogenous adaptation of agents, that may adjust their local contact network in response to the risk of being infected, can have the perverse effect of increasing the overall systemic infectiveness of a disease. We study a dynamical model over two geographically distinct but interacting locations, to better understand theoretically the mechanism at play. Moreover, we provide empirical motivation from the Italian National Bovine Database, for the period 2006-2013.
