Surgery on manifold operads

We study cobordisms of a class of topological operads called ``manifold operads''. These operads are generalizations of the Fulton-MacPherson operad: an operad built from configurations of points in Euclidean space. Cobordism of manifold operads, along with the associated theory of surgery, depends crucially on delicate combinatorial results for trees associated to operadic bimodules. As an application of surgery, we produce infinitely many manifold operads which are left or right ``bimodule cobordant'' to, but not homotopy equivalent to the Fulton-MacPherson operad.

Stable homology of complex braid groups

We compute the stable homology of complex braid groups of types $B(e,e,n)$ and $B(2e,e,n)$ for fixed $e\ge2$ and increasing $n$. This accounts for the stable homology of all infinite families of complex braid groups. We achieve this by explicitly computing a quillenization of their stable classifying spaces. In particular, we provide a proof of an identification of the stable homology of Artin groups of type $D$ claimed by Fuchs in the '70s.

On the smoothing theory delooping of disc diffeomorphism and embedding spaces

The celebrated Morlet-Burghelea-Lashof-Kirby-Siebenmann smoothing theory theorem states that the group $\mathrm{Diff}_\partial(D^n)$ of diffeomorphisms of a disc $D^n$ relative to the boundary is equivalent to $Ω^{n+1}\left(\mathrm{PL}_n/\mathrm{O}_n\right)$ for any $n\geq 1$ and to $Ω^{n+1}\left(\mathrm{TOP}_n/\mathrm{O}_n\right)$ for $n\neq 4$. We revise smoothing theory results to show that the delooping generalizes to different versions of disc smooth embedding spaces relative to the boundary, namely the usual embeddings, those modulo immersions, and framed embeddings. The latter spaces deloop as $\mathrm{Emb}_\partial^{fr}(D^m,D^n)\simeqΩ^{m+1}\left(\mathrm{O}_n\backslash\!\!\backslash\mathrm{PL}_n/\mathrm{PL}_{n,m}\right)\simeq Ω^{m+1}\left(\mathrm{O}_n\backslash\!\!\backslash\mathrm{TOP}_n/\mathrm{TOP}_{n,m}\right)$ for any $n\geq m\geq 1$ ($n\neq 4$ for the second equivalence), where the left-hand side in the case $n-m=2$ or $(n,m)=(4,3)$ should be replaced by the union of the path-components of $\mathrm{PL}$-trivial knots (framing being disregarded). Moreover, we show that for $n\neq 4$, the delooping is compatible with the Budney $E_{m+1}$-action. We use this delooping to combine the Hatcher $\mathrm{O}_{m+1}$-action and the Budney $E_{m+1}$-action into a framed little discs operad $E_{m+1}^{\mathrm{O}_{m+1}}$-action on $\mathrm{Emb}_\partial^{fr}(D^m,D^n)$.

Non collapse of the Sinha spectral sequence for knots in R^3

We give an explicit description up to the third page of the Sinha homology mod 2 spectral sequence for the space of long knots in $\mathbb{R}^3$, that is conjecturally equivalent to the Vassiliev spectral sequence. The description arises from a multicomplex structure on the Fox Neuwirth chain complexes for euclidean configuration spaces. A computer assisted calculation reveals a non trivial third page differential from a 2-dimensional class, in contrast to the rational case.

Chain level Koszul duality between the Gravity and Hypercommutative operads

Let $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+1}$ be the moduli space of genus zero stable curves with $(n+1)$-marked points. The collection $\overline{\mathcal{M}}=\{\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+1}\}_{n\geq 2}$ forms an operad in the category of complex projective varieties; its homology $Hycom= H_*(\overline{\mathcal{M}})$ is called the Hypercommutative operad. In this paper we construct a chain model for the hypercommutative operad, i.e. an operad of chain complexes $C_*^{dual}(\overline{\mathcal{M}})$ which is weakly equivalent to the operad of singular chains $C_*(\overline{\mathcal{M}})$. We prove that $C_*^{dual}(\overline{\mathcal{M}})$ is the linear dual of the bar construction $B(grav)$, where $grav$ is a chain model of the gravity operad based on cacti without basepoint. This shows that the Gravity and Hypercommutative operad are Koszul dual also at the chain level, refining a previous result of Getzler. The construction is topological, since $C_*^{dual}(\overline{\mathcal{M}})(n)$ is the cellular complex associated to a regular CW-decomposition of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+1}$.

The Atiyah-Sutcliffe conjecture and $E_n$-algebras

We show that a certain conjecture by Atiyah and Sutcliffe implies the existence of an $ E_3 $-algebra (respectively $ E_2 $-algebra) structure on the disjoint union of all complex (respectively real) full flag manifolds modulo symmetric groups. Moreover, we show that these structures are liftings of exotic $ E_3 $ (respectively $ E_2 $) structures on the free $ E_\infty $-algebras on $ BU(1)+ $ (respectively $ BO(1)+ $), that do not extend to $ E_4 $ (respectively $ E_3 $) structures. We also provide some (co)homological calculations supporting the conjecture.

Multisimplicial chains and configuration spaces

This paper presents a generalization to multisimplicial sets of previously defined $E_\infty$-coalgebra structures on the chains of simplicial and cubical sets. We focus on the surjection chain complexes of McClure--Smith as a main example and construct a zig-zag of complexity preserving quasi-isomorphisms of $E_\infty$-coalgebras relating these to both the singular chains on configuration spaces and the Barratt--Eccles chain complexes.

Koszul duality for topological E_n-operads

We show that the Koszul dual of an E_n-operad in spectra is O(n)-equivariantly equivalent to its n-fold desuspension. To this purpose we introduce a new O(n)-operad of Euclidean spaces R_n, the barycentric operad, that is fibred over simplexes and has homeomorphisms as structure maps; we also introduce its sub-operad of restricted little n-discs D_n, that is an E_n-operad. The duality is realized by an unstable explicit S-duality pairing (F_n)_+ \smash BD_n \to S_n, where B is the bar-cooperad construction, F_n is the Fulton-MacPherson E_n-operad, and the dualizing object S_n is an operad of spheres that are one-point compactifications of star-shaped neighbourhoods in R_n. We also identify the Koszul dual of the operad inclusion map E_n \to E_{n+m} as the (n+m)-fold desuspension of an unstable operad map E_{n+m} \to Σ^m E_n defined by May.

A cell decomposition of the Fulton MacPherson operad

We construct a small regular cellular decomposition of the Fulton MacPherson operad $FM_2$ that is compatible with the operad composition. The cells are indexed by trees with edges of two colors and vertices labelled by cells of the cacti operad. We compute the generating functions counting the cells, that are algebraic.

The Fulton Mac Pherson operad and the W-construction

In this short note we explain in detail the construction of a $O(n)$-equivariant isomorphism of topological operads $F_n \cong WF_n$ , where $F_n$ is the Fulton Mac Pherson operad and $W$ is the Boardman-Vogt construction

Non-formality of planar configuration spaces in characteristic two

We prove that the ordered configuration space of 4 or more points in the plane has a non-formal singular cochain algebra in characteristic two. This is proved by constructing an explicit non trivial obstruction class in the Hochschild cohomology of the cohomology ring of the configuration space, by means of the Barratt-Eccles-Smith simplicial model. We also show that if the number of points does not exceed its dimension, then an euclidean configuration space is intrinsically formal over any ring.

A remark on configuration spaces of two points

We prove a homotopy invariance result for a certain covering space of the space of ordered configurations of two points in $M \times X$ where $M$ is a closed smooth manifold and $X$ is any fixed aspherical space which is not a point.

The Space of Linear Maps into a Grassmann Manifold

We show that the space of all holomorphic maps of degree one from the Riemann sphere into a Grassmann manifold is a sphere bundle over a flag manifold. Using the notions of "kernel" and "span" of a map, we completely identify the space of unparameterized maps as well. The illustrative case of maps into the quadric Grassmann manifold is discussed in details and the homology of the corresponding spaces computed.

Mod-two cohomology of symmetric groups as a Hopf ring

We compute the mod-2 cohomology of the collection of all symmetric groups as a Hopf ring, where the second product is the transfer product of Strickland and Turner. We first give examples of related Hopf rings from invariant theory and representation theory. In addition to a Hopf ring presentation, we give geometric cocycle representatives and explicitly determine the structure as an algebra over the Steenrod algebra. All calculations are explicit, with an additive basis which has a clean graphical representation. We also briefly develop related Hopf ring structures on rings of symmetric invariants and end with a generating set consisting of Stiefel-Whitney classes of regular representations v2. Added new results on varieties which represent the cocycles, a graphical representation of the additive basis, and on the Steenrod algebra action. v3. Included a full treatment of invariant theoretic Hopf rings, refined the definition of representing varieties, and corrected and clarified references.

The topological cyclic Deligne conjecture

Let O be a cyclic topological operad with multiplication. In the framework of the cosimplicial machinery by McClure and Smith, we prove that the totalization of the cosimplicial space associated to O has an action of an operad equivalent to the framed little 2-discs operad.

Formality of the framed little 2-discs operad and semidirect products

We prove that the operad of framed little 2-discs is formal. Tamarkin and Kontsevich each proved that the unframed 2-discs operad is formal. The unframed 2-discs is an operad in the category of S^1-spaces, and the framed 2-discs operad can be constructed from the unframed 2-discs by forming the operadic semidirect product with the circle group. The idea of our proof is to show that Kontsevich's chain of quasi-isomorphisms is compatible with the circle actions and so one can essentially take the operadic semidirect product with the homology of S^1 everywhere to obtain a chain of quasi-isomorphisms between the homology and the chains of the framed 2-discs.

Cyclic operad formality for compactified moduli spaces of genus zero surfaces

The framed little 2-discs operad is homotopy equivalent to the Kimura-Stasheff-Voronov cyclic operad of moduli spaces of genus zero stable curves with tangent rays at the marked points and nodes. We show that this cyclic operad is formal, meaning that its chains and its homology (the Batalin-Vilkovisky operad) are quasi-isomorphic cyclic operads. To prove this we introduce a new complex of graphs in which the differential is a combination of edge deletion and contraction, and we show that this complex resolves BV as a cyclic operad.
