Neural-Schwarz Tiling for Geometry-Universal PDE Solving at Scale

Most learned PDE solvers follow a global-surrogate paradigm: a neural operator is trained to map full problem descriptions to full solution fields for a prescribed distribution of geometries, boundary conditions, and coefficients. This has enabled fast inference within fixed problem families, but limits reuse across new domains and makes large-scale deployment dependent on expensive problem-specific data generation. We introduce $\textbf{NEST}$ ($\textbf{Ne}$ural-$\textbf{S}$chwarz $\textbf{T}$iling), a local-to-global framework that shifts learning from full-domain solution operators to reusable local physical solvers. The central premise is that, although global PDE solutions depend on geometry, scale, and boundary conditions, the physical response on small neighborhoods can be learned locally and composed into global solutions through classical domain decomposition. NEST learns a neural operator on minimal voxel patches ($3 \times 3 \times 3$) with diverse local geometries and boundary/interface data. At inference time, an unseen voxelized domain is tiled into overlapping patches, the learned local solver is applied patchwise, and global consistency is enforced through iterative Schwarz coupling with partition-of-unity assembly. In this way, generalization is shifted from a monolithic neural model to the combination of local physics learning and algorithmic global assembly. We instantiate NEST on nonlinear static equilibrium in compressible neo-Hookean solids and evaluate it on large, geometrically complex 3D domains far outside the scale of the training patches. Our results show that local neural building blocks, coupled through Schwarz iteration, offer a reusable local-training path toward scalable learned PDE solvers that generalize across domain size, shape, and boundary-condition configurations.

Stability and existence of relativistic plasma--vacuum interfaces

We consider the free boundary problem for relativistic plasma--vacuum interfaces in two and three spatial dimensions. The plasma flow is governed by the equations of ideal relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, while the vacuum magnetic and electric fields satisfy Maxwell's equations. The plasma and vacuum magnetic fields are tangential to the interface, which moves with the plasma flow. This yields a nonlinear, multidimensional hyperbolic problem with a free boundary that is characteristic of variable multiplicity. We identify a quantitative stability condition and establish the linear stability of three-dimensional relativistic plasma--vacuum interfaces in the sense that the variable-coefficient linearized problem satisfies energy estimates in anisotropic Sobolev spaces. In estimating tangential derivatives, we exploit an intrinsic cancellation effect to convert the boundary term into an instant integral. We then separate the estimate involving spatial derivatives from that involving time derivatives, so that the instant integral can be mainly absorbed by the instant energy under the stability condition. Moreover, we prove the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of solutions to the nonlinear problem in two-dimensional space, provided that the plasma and vacuum magnetic fields do not vanish simultaneously at any point of the initial interface. The proof combines the solvability and tame estimate of the linearized problem with a suitable modified Nash--Moser iteration. In particular, to establish its solvability, the two-dimensional linearized problem is reduced to a transport equation for the interface function and a hyperbolic boundary problem with maximally nonnegative boundary conditions.

A note on Ideal Magneto-Hydrodynamics with perfectly conducting boundary conditions in the quarter space

We consider the initial-boundary value problem in the quarter space for the system of equations of ideal Magneto-Hydrodynamics for compressible fluids with perfectly conducting wall boundary conditions. On the two parts of the boundary the solution satisfies different boundary conditions, which make the problem an initial-boundary value problem with non-uniformly characteristic boundary. We identify a subspace ${{\mathcal H}}^3(\Omega)$ of the Sobolev space $H^3(\Omega)$, obtained by addition of suitable boundary conditions on one portion of the boundary, such that for initial data in ${{\mathcal H}}^3(\Omega)$ there exists a solution in the same space ${{\mathcal H}}^3(\Omega)$, for all times in a small time interval. This yields the well-posedness of the problem combined with a persistence property of full $H^3$-regularity, although in general we expect a loss of normal regularity near the boundary. Thanks to the special geometry of the quarter space the proof easily follows by the "reflection technique".

The Incompressible Limit of the Equations of Compressible Ideal Magneto-Hydrodynamics with perfectly conducting boundary

We consider the initial-boundary value problem in the halfspace for the system of equations of ideal Magneto-Hydrodynamics with a perfectly conducting wall boundary condition. We show the convergence of solutions to the solution of the equations of incompressible MHD as the Mach number goes to zero. Because of the characteristic boundary, where a loss of regularity in the normal direction to the boundary may occur, the convergence is shown in suitable anisotropic Sobolev spaces which take account of the singular behavior at the boundary.

Nonlinear stability and existence of two-dimensional compressible current-vortex sheets

We are concerned with nonlinear stability and existence of two-dimensional current-vortex sheets in ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics. This is a nonlinear hyperbolic initial-boundary value problem with characteristic free boundary. It is well-known that current-vortex sheets may be at most weakly (neutrally) stable due to the existence of surface waves solutions that yield a loss of derivatives in the energy estimate of the solution with respect to the source terms. We first identify a sufficient condition ensuring the weak stability of the linearized current-vortex sheets problem. Under this stability condition for the background state, we show that the linearized problem obeys an energy estimate in anisotropic weighted Sobolev spaces with a loss of derivatives. Based on the weakly linear stability results, we then establish the local-in-time existence and nonlinear stability of current-vortex sheets by a suitable Nash-Moser iteration, provided the stability condition is satisfied at each point of the initial discontinuity. This result gives a new confirmation of the stabilizing effect of sufficiently strong magnetic fields on Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities.

Weakly nonlinear surface waves on the plasma-vacuum interface

We consider the free boundary problem for a plasma--vacuum interface in ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. Unlike the classical statement, where the vacuum magnetic field obeys the div-curl system of pre-Maxwell dynamics, we do not neglect the displacement current in the vacuum region and consider the Maxwell equations for electric and magnetic fields. Our aim is to construct highly oscillating surface wave solutions in weakly nonlinear regime to this plasma--vacuum interface problem. Under a necessary and sufficient stability condition for a piecewise constant background state, we construct approximate solutions at any arbitrarily large order of accuracy to the free boundary problem in three space dimensions when the initial discontinuity displays high frequency oscillations. Moreover, such approximate surface waves have nontrivial residual non-oscillatory components.

Anisotropic regularity of linearized compressible vortex sheets

We are concerned with supersonic vortex sheets for the Euler equations of compressible inviscid fluids in two space dimensions. For the problem with constant coefficients, in [10] the authors have derived a pseudo-differential equation which describes the time evolution of the discontinuity front of the vortex sheet. In agreement with the classical stability analysis, the problem is weakly stable if $|[v\cdotτ]|>2\sqrt{2}\,c$, and the well-posedness was obtained in standard weighted Sobolev spaces. The aim of the present paper is to improve the result of [10], by showing the existence of the solution in function spaces with some additional weighted anisotropic regularity in the frequency space.

Stability of Multidimensional Thermoelastic Contact Discontinuities

We study the system of nonisentropic thermoelasticity describing the motion of thermoelastic nonconductors of heat in two and three spatial dimensions, where the frame-indifferent constitutive relation generalizes that for compressible neo-Hookean materials. Thermoelastic contact discontinuities are characteristic discontinuities for which the velocity is continuous across the discontinuity interface. Mathematically, this renders a nonlinear multidimensional hyperbolic problem with a characteristic free boundary. We identify a stability condition on the piecewise constant background states and establish the linear stability of thermoelastic contact discontinuities in the sense that the variable coefficient linearized problem satisfies a priori tame estimates in the usual Sobolev spaces under small perturbations. Our tame estimates for the linearized problem do not break down when the strength of thermoelastic contact discontinuities tends to zero. The missing normal derivatives are recovered from the estimates of several quantities relating to physical involutions. In the estimate of tangential derivatives, there is a significant new difficulty, namely the presence of characteristic variables in the boundary conditions. To overcome this difficulty, we explore an intrinsic cancellation effect, which reduces the boundary terms to an instant integral. Then we can absorb the instant integral into the instant tangential energy by means of the interpolation argument and an explicit estimate for the traces on the hyperplane.

Stability of an incompressible plasma-vacuum interface with displacement current in vacuum

We study the free boundary problem for a plasma-vacuum interface in ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. Unlike the classical statement when the vacuum magnetic field obeys the div-curl system of pre-Maxwell dynamics, to better understand the influence of the electric field in vacuum we do not neglect the displacement current in the vacuum region and consider the Maxwell equations for electric and magnetic fields. Under the necessary and sufficient stability condition for a planar interface found in [Trakhinin Y. arXiv:1812.08675], we prove an energy a priori estimate for the linearized constant coefficient problem. The process of derivation of this estimate is based on various methods, including a secondary symmetrization of the vacuum Maxwell equations, the derivation of a hyperbolic evolutionary equation for the interface function and the construction of a degenerate Kreiss-type symmetrizer for an elliptic-hyperbolic problem for the total pressure.

Nonlinear Stability of Relativistic Vortex Sheets in Three-Dimensional Minkowski Spacetime

We are concerned with the nonlinear stability of vortex sheets for the relativistic Euler equations in three-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. This is a nonlinear hyperbolic problem with a characteristic free boundary. In this paper, we introduce a new symmetrization by choosing appropriate functions as primary unknowns. A necessary and sufficient condition for the weakly linear stability of relativistic vortex sheets is obtained by analyzing the roots of the Lopatinski\uı determinant associated to the constant coefficient linearized problem. Under this stability condition, we show that the variable coefficient linearized problem obeys an energy estimate with a loss of derivatives. The construction of certain weight functions plays a crucial role in absorbing error terms caused by microlocalization. Based on the weakly linear stability result, we establish the existence and nonlinear stability of relativistic vortex sheets under small initial perturbations by a Nash--Moser iteration scheme.

On the evolution equation of compressible vortex sheets

We are concerned with supersonic vortex sheets for the Euler equations of compressible inviscid fluids in two space dimensions. For the problem with constant coefficients we derive an evolution equation for the discontinuity front of the vortex sheet. This is a pseudo-differential equation of order two. In agreement with the classical stability analysis, if the jump of the tangential component of the velocity satisfies $|[v\cdotτ]|<2\sqrt{2}\,c$ (here $c$ denotes the sound speed) the symbol is elliptic and the problem is ill-posed. On the contrary, if $|[v\cdotτ]|>2\sqrt{2}\,c$, then the problem is weakly stable, and we are able to derive a wave-type a priori energy estimate for the solution, with no loss of regularity with respect to the data. Then we prove the well-posedness of the problem, by showing the existence of the solution in weighted Sobolev spaces.

Weak stability of the plasma-vacuum interface problem

We consider the free boundary problem for the two-dimensional plasma-vacuum interface in ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). In the plasma region, the flow is governed by the usual compressible MHD equations, while in the vacuum region we consider the Maxwell system for the electric and the magnetic fields. At the free interface, driven by the plasma velocity, the total pressure is continuous and the magnetic field on both sides is tangent to the boundary. We study the linear stability of rectilinear plasma-vacuum interfaces by computing the Kreiss-Lopatinskii determinant of an associated linearized boundary value problem. Apart from possible resonances, we obtain that the piecewise constant plasma-vacuum interfaces are always weakly linearly stable, independently of the size of tangential velocity, magnetic and electric fields on both sides of the characteristic discontinuity. We also prove that solutions to the linearized problem obey an energy estimate with a loss of regularity with respect to the source terms, both in the interior domain and on the boundary, due to the failure of the uniform Kreiss-Lopatinskii condition, as the Kreiss-Lopatinskii determinant associated with this linearized boundary value problem has roots on the boundary of the frequency space. In the proof of the a priori estimates, a crucial part is played by the construction of symmetrizers for a reduced differential system, which has poles at which the Kreiss-Lopatinskii condition may fail simultaneously.

Data dependence of approximate current-vortex sheets near the onset of instability

The paper is concerned with the free boundary problem for 2D current-vortex sheets in ideal incompressible magneto-hydrodynamics near the transition point between the linearized stability and instability. In order to study the dynamics of the discontinuity near the onset of the instability, Hunter and Thoo have introduced an asymptotic quadratically nonlinear integro-differential equation for the amplitude of small perturbations of the planar discontinuity. The local-in-time existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for the amplitude equation was already shown. In the present paper we prove the continuous dependence in strong norm of solutions on the initial data. This completes the proof of the well-posedness of the problem in the classical sense of Hadamard.

Existence of approximate current-vortex sheets near the onset of instability

The paper is concerned with the free boundary problem for 2D current-vortex sheets in ideal incompressible magneto-hydrodynamics near the transition point between the linearized stability and instability. In order to study the dynamics of the discontinuity near the onset of the instability, Hunter and Thoo have introduced an asymptotic quadratically nonlinear integro-differential equation for the amplitude of small perturbations of the planar discontinuity. The local-in-time existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for such amplitude equation was already proven, under a suitable stability condition. However, the solution found there has a loss of regularity (of order two) from the initial data. In the present paper, we are able to obtain an existence result of solutions with optimal regularity, in the sense that the regularity of the initial data is preserved in the motion for positive times.

Nonlinear surface waves on the plasma-vacuum interface

In this paper we study the propagation of weakly nonlinear surface waves on a plasma-vacuum interface. In the plasma region we consider the equations of incompressible magnetohydrodynamics, while in vacuum the magnetic and electric fields are governed by the Maxwell equations. A surface wave propagate along the plasma-vacuum interface, when it is linearly weakly stable. Following the approach of Ali and Hunter, we measure the amplitude of the surface wave by the normalized displacement of the interface in a reference frame moving with the linearized phase velocity of the wave, and obtain that it satisfies an asymptotic nonlocal, Hamiltonian evolution equation. We show the local-in-time existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for the amplitude equation in noncanonical variables, and we derive a blow up criterion.

Approximate current-vortex sheets near the onset of instability

The paper is concerned with the free boundary problem for 2D current-vortex sheets in ideal incompressible magneto-hydrodynamics near the transition point between the linearized stability and instability. In order to study the dynamics of the discontinuity near the onset of the instability, Hunter and Thoo have introduced an asymptotic quadratically nonlinear integro-differential equation for the amplitude of small perturbations of the planar discontinuity. We study such amplitude equation and prove its nonlinear well-posedness under a stability condition given in terms of a longitudinal strain of the fluid along the discontinuity.

Stability of the linearized MHD-Maxwell free interface problem

We consider the free boundary problem for the plasma-vacuum interface in ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). In the plasma region, the flow is governed by the usual compressible MHD equations, while in the vacuum region we consider the Maxwell system for the electric and the magnetic fields, in order to investigate the well-posedness of the problem, in particular in relation with the electric field in vacuum. At the free interface, driven by the plasma velocity, the total pressure is continuous and the magnetic field on both sides is tangent to the boundary. Under suitable stability conditions satisfied at each point of the plasma-vacuum interface, we derive a basic a priori estimate for solutions to the linearized problem. The proof follows by a suitable secondary symmetrization of the Maxwell equations in vacuum and the energy method. An interesting novelty is represented by the fact that the interface is characteristic with variable multiplicity, so that the problem requires a different number of boundary conditions, depending on the direction of the front velocity (plasma expansion into vacuum or viceversa). To overcome this difficulty, we recast the vacuum equations in terms of a new variable which makes the interface characteristic of constant multiplicity. In particular, we don't assume that plasma expands into vacuum.

Characteristic boundary value problems: estimates from H1 to L2

Motivated by the study of certain non linear free-boundary value problems for hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations arising in Magneto-Hydrodynamics, in this paper we show that an a priori estimate of the solution to certain boundary value problems, in the conormal Sobolev space H1_tan, can be transformed into an L2 a priori estimate of the same problem.
