A Task Force on Strong Coupling Determinations from Event Shapes

The strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$ is a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model. Its precise determination is essential for accurately predicting, studying, and understanding processes at the Large Hadron Collider and future experiments such as the Future Circular Collider. Event shape and correlator observables measured at electron-positron colliders provide one of the cleanest environments for extracting $\alpha_s$, thanks to their sensitivity to $\alpha_s$ and the availability of high-precision data from the Large Electron-Positron Collider. More broadly, such observables provide an ideal setting to develop and test our understanding of the perturbative and non-perturbative elements of Quantum Chromodynamics, which will underpin the field's precision and discovery frontiers for decades to come. Despite these advances, significant discrepancies persist between different determinations of $\alpha_s$ from event shapes, both in the extracted central values and estimated uncertainties. This document motivates the establishment of a dedicated Task Force to coordinate a community-wide effort addressing these open questions. We report on the first two-day meeting held at CERN in November 2025, summarizing the scientific discussion and documenting the experimental analyses identified as priorities during the meeting, as well as the concrete list of tasks to be carried out by the theory community in preparation for future meetings.

Impact of Z-boson transverse-momentum resummation on PDF determination

We study the impact of small-transverse-momentum resummation for neutral-current Drell-Yan lepton-pair production on the determination of collinear parton distribution functions (PDFs). We focus on measurements of the Z-boson transverse-momentum spectrum performed by ATLAS and CMS at the LHC at centre-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV, and include them in PDF fits based on the NNPDF methodology. Theoretical predictions are computed at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD and are supplemented with small-transverse-momentum resummation corrections at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy obtained with RadISH. Missing higher-order uncertainties are accounted for through a theory covariance matrix constructed from renormalisation- and factorisation-scale variations. We first revisit the treatment of the 8 TeV data, replacing the fixed-order predictions used in previous analyses with numerically stable NNLO calculations, and removing the additional numerical uncertainties introduced in earlier fits. We then assess the impact of the 13 TeV measurements, of resummation corrections, and of progressively lowering the minimum cut on the dilepton transverse momentum. We find that resummation improves the description of the Z boson transverse-momentum data and is essential for ensuring the overall consistency of the PDF fits. Nevertheless, it does not conclusively support extending the fitted kinematic region to transverse momenta below a few tens of GeV. The impact of resummation on PDFs is moderate, leading primarily to a stabilisation of the gluon PDF in a kinematic region of relevance for LHC phenomenology. Finally, we comment on the fact that the treatment of correlations among theoretical uncertainties may play a central role in PDF fits to measurements with percent- and sub-percent-level precision.

Boosted Higgs-strahlung off a $W$ boson at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD

The production of a boosted Higgs boson in association with a charged weak ($W$) boson is a key process to scrutinize the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism at hadron colliders. This reaction constitutes the dominant Higgs production channel at large transverse momentum, providing unique sensitivity to Higgs-boson interactions with other Standard Model particles as well as to physics beyond the Standard Model. In this Letter, we present the first fully differential calculation of this important scattering process at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). We find that the N$^3$LO corrections, amounting to approximately $+2\%$ in the boosted regime, generally lie at the edge of or outside the standard scale variation band of the previous perturbative order. The residual dependence of the N$^3$LO prediction on perturbative scales is reduced to below the percent level, marking a milestone for the Higgs precision program.

On Thrust Resummation Ambiguities in $e^+e^-$ Annihilation into Hadrons

In $e^+e^-$ shape-variable studies, and in particular for the case of thrust, fixed-order QCD predictions are typically supplemented with the resummation of contributions enhanced near the two-jet limit. In this work we examine whether different, yet legitimate, resummation prescriptions can induce significant differences in the resulting predictions. This can occur because formally equivalent prescriptions may differ by terms that, although subleading, are characterised by asymptotic expansions and may therefore lead to slow convergence. We first compare two alternative formulations of resummation: the conjugate-space (or Laplace-space) approach, in which resummation is performed in a variable conjugate to thrust, such that the observable factorises exactly in the soft-collinear limit; and the direct-space formulation, where resummation is instead carried out directly in the thrust variable. We show that, at double-logarithmic level, the inverse Laplace transform generates a convergent tower of subleading terms. Starting from leading-logarithmic accuracy, the expansion becomes asymptotic due to the presence of the Landau pole, leading to a mild log-factorial growth of the coefficients. When including the highest available logarithmic order in the resummation, matched to fixed-order results, we still find non-negligible differences between predictions obtained in the two spaces. We then consider a formulation of the resummation that avoids certain approximations commonly used in the derivation of conjugate-space resummation. We observe that this also has a non-negligible numerical impact. In general, we find that the systematics stemming from the adoption of different formalisms typically exceeds the quoted theoretical uncertainties, suggesting the need for more conservative theory-error estimates when using the thrust distribution in determinations of the strong coupling.

Advances in Local Analytic Sector Subtraction: massive NLO and elements of NNLO automation

In this article we present a number of developments within the scheme of Local Analytic Sector Subtraction for infrared divergences in QCD. First, we extend the scheme to deal with next-to-leading-order (NLO) singularities related to massive QCD particles in the final state. Then, we document a new implementation of the NLO subtraction scheme in the MADNKLO automated numerical framework, which is constructed to host higher-order subtraction algorithms. In particular, we discuss improvements in its performances with respect to the original implementation. Finally we describe the MADNKLO implementation of the first elements relevant to Local Analytic Sector Subtraction at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), in the case of massless QCD partons in the final state.

Refactorisation and Subtraction

Infrared subtraction algorithms beyond next-to-leading order necessitate the analysis of multiple infrared limits of scattering amplitudes, where several particles sequentially become soft or collinear. In this contribution, we report on the study performed in arXiv:2403.11975, which investigates these limits from the perspective of infrared factorisation, offering general definitions for strongly-ordered soft and collinear kernels, expressed in terms of gauge-invariant operator matrix elements. These definitions facilitate the identification of local subtraction counterterms for strongly-ordered configurations, whose integrals are designed to cancel the IR poles of real-virtual counterterms. This framework is validated at tree level for multiple emissions, and at one loop for single and double emissions.

Resummation of combined QCD-electroweak effects in Drell Yan lepton-pair production

We consider neutral- and charged-current Drell Yan lepton-pair production at hadron colliders, and include dominant classes of electroweak and mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to all orders in perturbation theory. The accurate description of these physical effects is vital for a precise determination of fundamental Standard Model parameters, such as the $W$-boson mass and the electroweak mixing angle, as well as for a solid assessment of the associated theoretical uncertainties. Our state-of-the-art resummation reaches next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy in both the electroweak and the mixed QCD-electroweak perturbative expansions, including constant terms at first order beyond Born level in both couplings, i.e. at order $α$ and $α_s α$. These effects are incorporated on top of QCD predictions at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy, which include constant terms at third order in the strong coupling. Our results retain, for the first time at this accuracy, full dependence on the kinematics of the final-state leptons, thereby enabling a realistic comparison with experimental analyses at the differential level in presence of fiducial cuts. We present a phenomenological analysis of the impact of electroweak corrections in relevant observables at the LHC. We find visible shape distortions in resummation-dominated kinematical regions with respect to pure-QCD predictions, highlighting the importance of a complete description, not limited to QCD, for precision Drell Yan physics.

Determination of the $W$-boson mass at hadron colliders

We introduce an observable relevant for the determination of the $W$-boson mass $m_W$ at hadron colliders. This observable is defined as an asymmetry around the jacobian peak of the charged-lepton transverse-momentum distribution in the charged-current Drell-Yan process. We discuss the observable's theoretical prediction, presenting results at different orders in QCD, and showing its perturbative stability. Its definition as a single scalar number and its linear sensitivity to $m_W$ allow a clean extraction of the latter and a straightforward discussion of the associated theoretical systematics: a perturbative QCD uncertainty of ${\cal O}(\pm 5)$ MeV on $m_W$ can be established by means of this observable, relying solely on charged-current Drell-Yan information. Owing to its relatively inclusive nature, the observable displays desirable properties also from the experimental viewpoint, especially for the unfolding of detector effects. We show that a measurement of this observable can lead to a competitive experimental error on $m_W$ at the LHC.

NNLO subtraction for any massless final state: a complete analytic expression

We use the Local Analytic Sector Subtraction scheme to construct a completely analytic set of expressions implementing a fully local infrared subtraction at NNLO for generic coloured massless final states. The cancellation of all explicit infrared poles appearing in the double-virtual contribution, in the real-virtual correction and in the integrated local infrared counterterms is explicitly verified, and all finite contributions arising from integrated local counterterms are analytically evaluated in terms of ordinary polylogarithms up to weight three. The resulting subtraction formula can readily be implemented in any numerical framework containing the relevant matrix elements up to NNLO.

Strongly-ordered infrared counterterms from factorisation

In the context of infrared subtraction algorithms beyond next-to-leading order, it becomes necessary to consider multiple infrared limits of scattering amplitudes, in which several particles become soft or collinear in a strongly-ordered sequence. We study these limits from the point of view of infrared factorisation, and we provide general definitions of strongly-ordered soft and collinear kernels in terms of gauge-invariant operator matrix elements. With these definitions in hand, it is possible to construct local subtraction counterterms for strongly-ordered configurations. Because of their factorised structure, these counterterms cancel infrared poles of real-virtual contributions by construction. We test these ideas at tree level for multiple emissions, and at one loop for single and double emissions, contributing to NNLO and N3LO distributions, respectively.

A new way of reducing negative weights in MC@NLO

We introduce a new technique, that we dub Born spreading, aimed at reducing the number of negative-weight $\mathbb S$ events in the MC@NLO matching of NLO calculations with parton-shower simulations. We show that such a technique, based on a re-distribution of Born matrix elements in the radiative phase space, achieves a sizeable reduction of negative-weight events at little computational cost. The method does not induce any biases in physical distributions.

A new observable for $W$-mass determination

In this contribution we discuss the properties of the jacobian asymmetry, the new observable introduced in hep-ph/2301.04059 for a robust determination of the value and uncertainty of the $W$-boson mass at hadron colliders.

Local analytic sector subtraction for initial- and final-state radiation at NLO in massless QCD

Within the framework of local analytic sector subtraction, we present the subtraction of next-to-leading-order QCD singularities for processes featuring massless coloured particles in the initial as well as in the final state. The features of the method are explained in detail, including the introduction of an optimisation procedure aiming at improving numerical stability at the cost of no extra analytic complexity. A numerical validation is provided for a variety of processes relevant to lepton as well as hadron colliders. This work constitutes a relevant step in view of the application of our subtraction method to processes involving initial-state radiation at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD.

Strongly-ordered infrared limits for subtraction counterterms from factorisation

After a brief introduction to the problem of subtraction of infrared divergences for high-order collider observables, we present a preliminary study of strongly-ordered soft and collinear multiple radiation from the point of view of factorisation. We show that the matrix elements of fields and Wilson lines that describe soft and collinear radiation in factorised scattering amplitudes can be re-factorised in strongly-ordered limits, providing a systematic method to compute them, to characterise their singularity structure, and to build local subtraction counterterms for strongly-ordered configurations. Our results provide tools for a detailed organisation of subtraction algorithms, in principle to all orders in perturbation theory.

Sensitivity to New Physics in final states with multiple gauge and Higgs bosons

We analyse the sensitivity to beyond-the-Standard-Model effects of hadron-collider processes involving the interaction of two electroweak and two Higgs bosons, VVHH, with V being either a W or a Z boson. We examine current experimental results by the CMS collaboration in the context of a dimension-8 extension of the Standard Model in an effective-field-theory formalism. We show that constraints from vector-boson-fusion Higgs-pair production on operators that modify the Standard Model VVHH interactions are already comparable with or more stringent than those quoted in the analysis of vector-boson-scattering final states. We study the modifications of such constraints when introducing unitarity bounds, and investigate the potential of new experimental final states, such as ZHH associated production. Finally, we show perspectives for the high-luminosity phase of the LHC.

Momentum-space resummation for transverse observables and the Higgs $p_\perp$ at N$^3$LL+NNLO

We present an approach to the momentum-space resummation of global, recursive infrared and collinear safe observables featuring kinematic zeros away from the Sudakov limit. In the hadro-production of a generic colour singlet, we consider the family of inclusive observables which do not depend on the rapidity of the radiation, prime examples being the transverse momentum of the singlet, and $ϕ^*$ in Drell-Yan pair production. We derive a resummation formula valid up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logaritmic accuracy for the considered observables. This formula reduces exactly to the customary resummation performed in impact-parameter space in the known cases, and it also predicts the correct power-behaved scaling of the cross section in the limit of small value of the observable. We show how this formalism is efficiently implemented by means of Monte Carlo techniques in a fully exclusive generator that allows one to apply arbitrary cuts on the Born variables for any colour singlet, as well as to automatically match the resummed results to fixed-order calculations. As a phenomenological application, we present state-of-the-art predictions for the Higgs-boson transverse-momentum spectrum at the LHC at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy matched to fixed next-to-next-to-leading order.

Theory uncertainties in the fiducial Drell-Yan cross section and distributions

In these proceedings we study various sources of theoretical uncertainty in the Drell-Yan $p_T^{\ell\ell}$ spectrum focussing on the $p_T^{\ell\ell} \lesssim 100\, {\rm GeV}$ region. We consider several perturbative aspects related to the choice of the scale setting adopted in resummed calculations, and we assess their impact on the theoretical prediction both for the differential $p_T^{\ell\ell}$ spectrum and for the $\rm{N}^3\rm{LO}$ fiducial cross section. For both quantities, we find the results obtained with the different setups to be compatible with each other within the quoted uncertainty, highlighting the robustness of the theoretical prediction. In all cases, the experimental LHC data for the $p_T^{\ell\ell}$ spectrum is well described by our calculation.

Analytic integration of soft and collinear radiation in factorised QCD cross sections at NNLO

Within the framework of local analytic sector subtraction, we present the full analytic integration of double-real and real-virtual local infrared counterterms that enter NNLO QCD computations with any number of massless final-state partons. We show that a careful choice of phase-space mappings leads to simple analytic results, including non-singular terms, that can be obtained with conventional integration techniques.
